There's a certain irony in the fact that I never felt the need to create a GitHub profile README until now. I'm creating this mostly to let folks who may look for me here that I've moved to Codeberg at codeberg.org/kraker.
I'm still in the process of migrating, and some of my projects are still hosted on GitHub for now. But if you're looking for anything I'm building, you're more likely to find it over on Codeberg. I'm not planning on leaving GitHub completely though and I'll likely maintain a presence here for projects where it's needed for collaboration. But I intend to move all of my own open source projects to Codeberg.
There are many reasons I've decided to migrate off the GitHub platform, but it's mostly due to what can probably be summed up as "enshittification". I'm not here to rehash all of what's broken about the GitHub platform. It's all over the tech news feeds lately... For me a big reason in moving was I felt that GitHub was no longer the stewared of open source that it once was and which is what drew me to it in the first place.
Codeberg promises a better open source stewardship as a democratically run non-profit and is built on Forgejo which is under the same non-profit umbrella. Forgejo is a fork of Gitea. And honestly it's just a simpler interface with only what you need. It's a platform for hosting git repositories and not too much else; kind of like how GitHub used to be back in the day. I found myself breathing a sigh of relief after having landed there. I can get back to focusing on what I enjoy which is tinkering and building.
I believe in open source software, that's why I'm supporting Codeberg with a regularly scheduled donation on liberapay. If you're so inclined I encourage you to do the same.
