Simple tool to convert audio and video files to MP3.

Drop a file (or a whole folder) in, get clean .mp3 files out. Built for everyday use — no install wizard, no GUI clutter, just Python + ffmpeg.

Demo: convert a folder of audio/video to MP3

Features

  • Convert one file or an entire folder (recursive)
  • Works with common audio and video formats (extracts the audio track from videos)
  • Choose your bitrate (128k, 192k, 320k, …)
  • Optional output folder so originals stay untouched
  • Windows-friendly drag-and-drop via convert.bat
  • One-click setup for Windows (setup.bat installs ffmpeg when needed)
  • Zero pip packages — only the Python standard library

Requirements

Tool Why
Python 3 Runs the converter
ffmpeg Does the actual conversion

Windows (easiest)

  1. Install Python and tick Add Python to PATH
  2. Double-click setup.bat — it checks Python and installs ffmpeg via winget if missing
  3. Close and reopen the terminal if ffmpeg was just installed

macOS / Linux

# macOS
brew install ffmpeg

# Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt install ffmpeg

# Fedora
sudo dnf install ffmpeg

Quick start

# Clone
git clone https://github.com/punkkid0/ramseverywhere_mp3_converter.git
cd ramseverywhere_mp3_converter

# Single file
python to_mp3.py song.wav

# Video → extract audio as mp3
python to_mp3.py movie.mp4

# Whole folder → another folder
python to_mp3.py my_music/ -o converted/

# Higher quality
python to_mp3.py podcast.m4a -b 320k

Windows drag-and-drop

  1. Run setup.bat once
  2. Drag any supported file or folder onto convert.bat
  3. Wait — MP3s appear next to the originals (or in the folder you chose with -o)

Usage

python to_mp3.py <file_or_folder> [options]
Option Description Default
-o, --output Folder for the converted MP3s Same place as the input
-b, --bitrate Audio bitrate 192k
-v, --version Print version and exit —
-h, --help Show help —

Supported formats

Audio: .wav .flac .aac .ogg .m4a .wma .opus .aiff .alac .ac3 .amr .ape .mp2 .mp3

Video (audio extracted): .mp4 .mkv .avi .mov .flv .wmv .webm .mpg .mpeg .3gp .m4v .ts

If ffmpeg can read it, you can usually add more extensions in SUPPORTED_EXTENSIONS inside to_mp3.py.

How it works

Under the hood this runs ffmpeg with sensible defaults:

  • Audio only (-vn) — video streams are dropped
  • 44.1 kHz sample rate, stereo
  • Your chosen bitrate (default 192 kbps)

No cloud upload. Everything runs locally on your machine.

Contributing

Issues and pull requests are welcome. Keep it simple: this project should stay easy to run with only Python and ffmpeg.
