Touying logo - a presentation slides package for Typst

Touying (投影 in Chinese, /tóuyǐng/, meaning projection) is a user-friendly, powerful, and efficient package for creating presentation slides in Typst.

Version 0.8.0 (yaaay)

A big release, and the first that requires Typst 0.15.

The main new feature is article mode: the same source file compiles either to slides or to a flowing prose document, with animations collapsed to their final state and images optionally floated to the side.

Two new animation entry points come with it.

  • touying-render renders a piece of content at chosen animation stages, and
  • animate combines visibility and styling on one piece of content

Other improvements:

  • animations are now fully supported in equations, even in functions like frac or mat.
  • touying-recall was extended from whole slides to any labelled element
  • touying-fn-wrapper-raw now parses and nests its body, so #alert[.. #pause ..] works, and much more besides
  • list animations are finally also layout-stable in item-by-item and when nontight bc of parbreak
  • .pdfpc files can be written directly as bundle assets instead of through a separate typst query step
  • the footnote bibliography was rebuilt on real Typst bibliographies, and
  • the speaker-note panel is now a theme-supplied function with documentation to match.
  • a measure function that overrides typst's own one. Supports measuring animated content.
  • an improved touying-reducer making integration of other packages more straight-forward
  • alpha-changing-cover and color-changing-cover have been overhauled and are perfect cover functions now.
  • you may animate figures and captions now
  • and many many bug fixes

Internally, src/core.typ (6288 lines) was split into modules and the content handling was unified and several functions (mainly out of utils) moved places.

Things to watch when upgrading:

  • a #pause after uncover/only/alternatives no longer skips the subslides they reserve (they wrongfully did so in v0.7.x),
  • the footnote-bibliography config changed shape,
  • semi-transparent-cover is deprecated in favor of alpha-changing-cover and color-changing-cover, and
  • on a second screen the page background is confined to the slide half

Most documentation pages were rewritten or corrected.

Tylina has two PowerPoint export modes, both preserving speaker notes:

  • Editable (experimental): text, simple inline math, supported images and shapes, and supported links become native PowerPoint objects. Complex content remains in ordered vector fallback layers; fonts and line wrapping can differ in PowerPoint, so this mode is not pixel-identical.
  • Visual fidelity: each slide is a rendered image, preserving the layout but not editable text.
