[css-text-decor] skip space and Ethiopic word space. #1146

Closed

Description

@r12a

https://drafts.csswg.org/css-text-decor-3/#text-decoration-skip-property

spaces
Skip all spacing, i.e. all characters with the Unicode White_Space property [UAX44] and all word separators, plus any adjacent letter-spacing or word-spacing.

The Ethiopic layout requirements say that an Ethiopic word space character following a word that is underlined or highlighted should also carry that underline or highlight. See https://w3c.github.io/elreq/#emphasis_with_wordspace That seems to be contravened by the current spec wording.

    Fixed by only considering characters with the White_Space property, not visible word separators such as Ethiopic word space. Let me know if the Aegean, Ugaritic, or Phoenician word separators need different behavior.

    What about the sometimes-visible U+1680 OGHAM SPACE MARK?

    I haven't the foggiest idea, so I'm happy to let the behavior there fall out of the current definition until someone complains. (Although my best guess would be to treat it the same as U+20 SPACE.)

    the fix to only consider space symbols with the White_Space property seems appropriate and avoids the issue with Ethiopic wordspace.
