An Ordinary Day

It was late August in the summer of 2001.  Unemployed at the time, I was paying a visit to the unemployment office in the financial district (no phoning it in or going online like today). Coming up out of the subway I found myself flanked by the Twin Towers and stopped dead in my tracks at their base and looked up.

Looking up might not seem like a big deal but New Yorkers walk looking straight on or slightly down so as to avoid direct eye contact. There are lots of  obstacles to maneuver around as we rush from point A to point B. Only tourists stand on the sidewalks, maps in hand, looking up and appreciating the stunning architecture.  What was it that day that made me look up?

Two black monoliths rose up into the clear blue sky completely filling my field of vision. It was an awesome sight. Wishing I had a camera I briefly considered buying a disposable one but distinctly recall telling myself I’d come back another time because “it’s not like they’re going anywhere.” (more…)

Apart(men)t

Knowingly or not, we all start with a wish-list.

In a safe neighborhood, close to work, southern light, hardwood floors, a full bath with tub, maybe a small study. A patio would be nice, but it’s gotta be under $1,700 a month.

He should be taller than me, make me laugh, have a positive outlook, enjoy good food and wine, want kids, love cats(or be open to learning to love them) doesn’t live with his parents, can support himself and maybe a family (so I have the option of staying home when we have kids).

Meeting people online can be rewarding – or fraught with anxiety. Frankly, I have never been one to spend much time in chat rooms because they can be a time suck.  Plus, you never know what could be lurking behind those LOLs.

However, I was forced to get chatty after starting OldCatsRule. One of the first people who reached out to me online was the founder of this blog. After realizing that we both lived in the same city, she suggested meeting. (more…)
