    The Sideburn episode

Simple plot to follow, more intrigued by the different styles of sideburns (up to 7 characters) as the 70s begin.

    Hurrah...no singing!

When the episode began, I cringed. I thought "oh, no...not another story about a nightclub singer!"...and fortunately I was wrong. While the main character, Jimmy (Ray Danton) DID play a lounge singer, fortunately it was NOT an episode that featured some singer in their acting debut--something "Hawaii Five-O" did several times--and which were among their poorest episodes. I began to suspect their may not be any singing, because Danton was a frequent guest on the show and usually played very, very unsavory characters. Here, however, he was only slightly unsavory! The show begins, as I said, in a nightclub. The featured act (Jimmy) is a real hot-head--and he's in the midst of a brawl with a heckler. Oddly, two guys stand back and talk about how they think they've found the perfect guy...but for what? Later, when it's very late, Jimmy stumbles out to his car and passes out...as the same two guys approach. In the very next scene, you see a waste treatment plant exploding...and Jimmy laying there by his car...passed out still. It seems that he was the perfect patsy--a hot head, drunk and apparently he'd mouthed off a few times about how the treatment facility (among others) was poisoning the islands.

The problem, however, is that it's all too convenient. McGarrett knows that no reasonable guy would do this...fall asleep there as if waiting to get picked up. Jimmy swears he didn't do anything and eventually the pieces all start to add up to something else entirely. Who set Jimmy up and what they intend to do next is just something you'll have to see for yourself.

Overall, a very interesting episode and one that is well-written and executed. A very good plot that's worth seeing.

    • Trivia
That two characters are named Briggs and Phelps can be attributed to the fact that this episode's writers, Eric Bercovici and Jerry Ludwig, were also writers for Mission: Impossible (1966).
    • Goofs
Toward the end of the show, just before the shootout, they are dragging an unconscious Jimmy to the car in the parking garage. But you can see him lift his leg to step on the curb, and bend his leg as they are getting ready to sit him down on the ground. If he was really unconscious, he wouldn't be moving his legs on his own like that.
    • Quotes

Jimmy: [Ready to throw Coulfax over the side] He'll get himself a fancy lawyer... He'll get off!

Det. Steve McGarrett: Not this time... I give you my word.
