Kin Ping Meh – Concrete (1976) [double live album]

Their 5th album, live in concert. Great prog!! ...or just hard rock
Very rare out of print double CD...

1976 / 1995 (Nova / Second Battle)

As far as I am aware, there were no other German bands like Kin Ping Meh, who chose their name in the Chinese language! In 1970, this quintet assembled in Mannheim: Werner Stephan (lead vocals), Joachim Schafer (guitar, piano, vocals), Fritz Schmitt (organ, piano), Torsten Herzog (bass) and Kalle Weber (drums). They played live extensively during their early years, performing a rough hard rock modeled on British bands like Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Spooky Tooth. Soon, Kin Ping Meh were discovered by Polydor's talent scouts. Joachim Schafer left the band just before the recording of their first album. He was promptly replaced by Willie Wagner (guitar, harmonica, vocals), who joined the band in the Windrose Studio. Indeed, Wagner wrote the stand-out track of this album, the opening 11-minute 'Fairy-Tales', a haunting heavy rock song with long, 'progressive' guitar and organ solo parts. Even if you do not find this style attractive, you'll sense the great enthusiasm of the band. There were also some mellow, folky songs on the album, like 'Too Many People', recorded live and boasting an irresistible chorus. 'Kin Ping Meh' was produced by the experienced rock veterans Achim Reichel and Frank Dostal. The engineer was none other than Konrad Plank. The album is highly recommended for fans of groups like Epitaph, Zarathustra, Frame, etc. It's now quite rare (selling for more than 300 DM) as the first and only vinyl edition was only pressed at around 5,000 copies.

The Flock 1975 Inside Out (Sonic re.Creation vinyl)

3 stars! Gone is the wind section (which is not necessarily a bad thing IMO). Gone is Jerry Goodman (which is not necessarily a good thing IMO). He was replaced by another great violin player : Mike Zydowsky who joined the band in 1973 or so for their touring over Europe.

The music here is less jazz oriented than on their first two albums and there are some very good tracks in here. Still, jazz is very much present during the longest song from this album : "Back To You". It goes along with the poorest : "Hang On" which is a funky / soul song which is best avoided, believe me.

Blue Goose - Blue Goose 1975

Hard, crunchy, guitar driven, blues-psych madness!!!!

Blue Goose is a really great record out of the UK from 1975 that sounds more like it's from 1972 or 1973. Just a real loud jammin, hard, heavy, psych/blues boogie sound with great guitars, keyboards and some harmonica. Everything I love about early 70's rock and a real lost gem!!!

Eddie Clarke(of Motorhead) left the band just prior to the recording of this album.

Amon Düül II - Manana (1971 '73) THE COMPLETE BBC RECORDINGS

    rod45 Nov 26 2014  3.50 stars
Good "live" recording of some of their early to middle 70's stuff. Live in London is a bit better but if you were into this band way back when, I think you will appreciate this. Of course a wee buzz helps as it does with all Amon Duul 2 recordings.

CCS (Collective Consciousness Society) - II (1972) [Rep2000]

CCS or C.C.S. (short for COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS SOCIETY) made 3 studio albums and 7 singles for Mickie Most's RAK Records in the UK in the early Seventies, before the band finally split up in late 1973. This fantastically clear-sounding Repertoire CD from 2000 is the second of those three albums - supplemented with two rare and desirable B-sides as bonus tracks.
    ----------

Almost 30 years after originally recorded,We are again greeted with a further compilation of the brilliant works of
Thorup,Korner & Cameron who with approx 19 other top British session musicians made up CCS.
I loved this 2nd volume which perfectly compliments the previous Compact disc release with further hits included such as Brother,
You may remember this tune was also used to countdown the UK top thirty by BBC Radio one. Also another Zeppelin cover ,
a gritty guitar version of Black Dog and a new version of Whole lotta love ingeniously mixed into a rock n roll compilation of Lucille ,
Long tall sally and Schoolday. Can we ever get it back an early ecological based song is also included .

Vieja Trova Santiaguera - La Manígua (1998) REPOST

Traditional Cuban Group featuring the Vocals of Veteran Singers Rey Caney and Rolando Creagh. Includes a Duet of the Cuban Standard 'rico Vacilon' with Spanish Pop Superstar Jarabe De Palo. Also Highlighted is the Fine 'tres' Playing of Caney and Themasterful Vocal Harmonies Created by the Group.

While the Buena Vista Social Club is earning all the fame, these five guys have it going as well: a movie about them ('Lagrimas Negras') and a (long) lifetime full of musical experience. The Vieja Trova has played together as a band for long, and this clearly shows in their music. Out of my collection of Cuban music, this is the CD I usually recommend to friends who have listened to the Buena Vista Social Club and would like to hear more. And more, much more they get to hear!! Always positive for us 'gringos': the booklet comes with the lyrics and much additional information.

    Spirit - California Blues (1996)

    Review by ClemofNazareth
    SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Prog Folk Researcher

...the last Spirit album he released just a few weeks before his untimely demise.

The music here isn't as important as the fact that California finally seemed to have found peace after many years of personal struggles and lack of recognition for his inspiring songwriting skills, and for his incredible oneness with the guitar. This album demonstrates the ease with which he was able to pick up a guitar and make it sing any way he wanted to. If you ever get a chance to see some video footage of Spirit live you'll see that he played almost effortlessly, yet managed to lay down licks that still amaze and inspire guitarists today. His idealistic lyrics seem out-of-place today; indeed, they kind of seemed out-of-place when he wrote many of them in the eighties and nineties. But he was never a slave to fashion, preferring instead to make a path in his own way and let the rest of us get on board, or not.

Amon Duul II - Almost Alive (1977)

    Editorial Reviews
With the six tracks on 'Almost Alive', Amon Duul II still caped the magic of their music. Even if this album sounds more mainstream, you can always feel the vibe of the early 70th, when Duul started to become Germany's music export No. 1. Highlights on this album are the dark and apocalyptic sounding 'Ain't Today Tomorrow's Yesterday', one of the most inventive instrumentals that Amon Duul II ever recorded and 'Live In Jericho', witch ends up in a madly Jam-Session. 'Almost Alive' is what the title already says, an album with the spontaneous, uncaged music that Amon Duul II ever recorded. For the complete re-issue series of the Amon Duul 2 catalogue, the band recorded exclusive bonus material.

Amon Düül - Collapsing Singvögel Rückwärts & Co (1969) [RE-POST]

    Amon Düül biography
Amon Düül were a huge musical collective that had a spectacular appearance in a tv-show in 1968. Before they put out their first album they split though, and one half set off to form Amon Düül 2 . The others kept the name Amon Düül and in 1969 published the first Krautrock album ever, "Psychedelic Underground". It was very badly produced, and the music consisted of long improvisations, but after this album no other band needed to have an inferiority complex. Their second official album "Paradieswärts Düül" is much better produced and has a folky touch. The albums "Collapsing - Singvögel Rückwärts", "Disaster" and "Experimente" stem from the same session as "Psychedelic Underground" and are of similar nature; they were published after the band had split up already.

Chicken Shack - On Air (Original BBC recordings) [RE-POST]

The next sighting of a Chicken Shack release came in 1991 with the release of On Air, one of the Band of Joy BBC session recordings. It's since been reissued. It featured mainly stuff from the first four Chicken Shack albums, an exhortation from Stan on the liner notes to get hold of his new CD Changes, and some annoying fade outs. These recordings are with Christine Perfect

    Tracks:
    01 - Tired eyes
    02 - I'd rather go blind
03 - Tears in the wind
04 - Nights is when it matters
    05 - Telling your fortune
06 - You know you did
    07 - Midnight hour
    08 - Hey baby
09 - Things you put me through
10 - Get like you used to be
11 - You done lost that good thing now
    12 - Look Ma I'm crying

Allman Brothers Band - American University 12-13-70 [RE-POST]

    Editorial Reviews
    Review
The Allman Brothers Band launch their own record label with a vintage live recording that appears to have sentimental value for at least one rabid fan, band manager Bert Holman, who, in his freshman year, booked the Allman Brothers to play two shows at the Leonard Gym at his college, American University, on Sunday, December 13, 1970, at 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. (The CD is drawn from both shows, with tracks one through five from the second set and "You Don't Love Me" and "Whippin' Post" from the first.)

    Eric Burdon & War-The Black Man's Burdon (1970) {2CD}

    review by custower:

Here we're offered a clean and more polished Burdon backed up by some of the greatest musicians of the day. The Black-Man's Burdon didn't produce any hits, but it did showcase the raw power of War itself. Although Burdon's rhetoric is held somewhat in check here, it still manages to get in the way of the band at times on this 1970 MGM release. Eric Burdon & War's second offering (a double LP) would also be their last together. Burdon would never sound this poignant in his career again, and Spill The Wine (from Burdon declares "War") would be remembered as the only relevant material Burdon performed in the post-Animals era.

    Haystacks Balboa - 1970 - Detoxified [ RE-POST]

Real heavy dudes with some grungey vocals, a mean attitude and some wicked guitar - above-par hard rock. Although outside the musical thrust of this book, they're worth a mention especially as a couple of tracks on their album were written by Larry West, formerly of the legendary Vagrants and younger brother of guitar colossus, Leslie 'Mountain' West.
    -----------------
Haystacks Balboa was an American band which played heavy progressive rock full of heavy organs and guitars + quite harsh (bluesy?) vocals. They recorded only one self-titled album (sometimes known as "Detoxified " ) in 1970.
    -------------
    Haystacks Balboa biography
No-nonsense powerhouse of a Heavy Prog act, HAYSTACKS BALBOA - a name coined by a friend of the VAGRANTS in reference to the large size and resemblance of BALBOA's guitarist, Mark MAYO, to wrestler Haystacks Calhoun - was from Queens,NY, and released one album on Polydor in 1970 (which has since been reissued as 'Detoxified').

The band formed in '69 and in addition to MAYO's guitar playing, featured Mark BABANI's drums, Lloyd LANDESMAN's keys, the bass of Mark POLOTT, and voice of Bruce SCOTT in a dark mix of stoner hardrock and prog adventure with extended passages. Evidently two of the cuts were penned by Leslie WEST's brother Larry and HAYSTACKS BALBOA has been compared to MOUNTAIN and BLACK SABBATH but exhibit a more traditional Prog approach than either of those groups and should amuse fans of yer old-tyme Prog 'n Roll.

    Jukka Tolonen - 1971 - Tolonen

Jukka Tolonen is not only Finland's national guitar hero but also one of the world's most respected guitarists. For the past 4 decades, he has captivated audiences through Scandinavia and Europe with his powerful and passionate works. He remains of the the most diverse guitarists of today, being equally proficient in a blues, rock, or fusion jazz environment.

Born in Helsinki in 1952, Tolonen first came to center stage in 1969 when a group of young Finnish musicians merged their collective talents to form the widely popular rock/jazz fusion band Tasavallan Presidentti, who were to record four critically acclaimed albums. During this time, Tolonen also recorded two albums with another well know band Wigwam. These recordings would establish Tolonen as a powerfully explosive and technically spectacular guitarist.

However, it would be his soon coming solo recordings that would really turn the music world upon its collective ear. His self titled debut recording, followed by "Summer Games", "The Hook", and "Hysterica" would set new standards for jazz fusion recordings and remain popular world wide even unto today.

Throughout the years, Jukka Tolonen has added his unique wizardry to recordings by Bill's Boogie Band, Piirpauke, and most recently a live recording from Tasavallan Presidentti. He has also recorded jazz fusion albums as the Jukka Tolonen Band and a couple of outstanding fusion flavored rock albums as the Jukka Tolonen Trio. These recordings, though varying in style, consistently demonstrate Jukka Tolonen as one of the premier guitarists of this or any other generation.

Jefferson Airplane - Volunteers (1969) [RE-POST by request]

This was the sixth album recorded by the group and the first to be wholly recorded in San Francisco, at Wally Heider's then state-of-the-art 16-track studio. Guests included Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, veteran session pianist Nicky Hopkins, future Airplane drummer Joey Covington on percussion, David Crosby, and Stephen Stills. It was one of the earliest 16-track recordings. The back cover of the album shows a picture of the MM-1000 professional 16-track tape recorder built by Ampex which was used to record the album.

The album was marked with strong anti-war and pro-anarchism songs. The theme of nature, communities and ecology was also explored with the songs "The Farm" and "Eskimo Blue Day". The title track was actually inspired by a "Volunteers of America" garbage truck that awoke singer Marty Balin one morning. The album provoked even more controversy with lyrics such as "Up against the wall, motherfucker" (from the song "We Can Be Together") which appeared on the opening track and "shit" which is said several times on "Eskimo Blue Day". Musically, the album is characterized by lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen's razor-sharp guitar work (the dueling solos on "Hey Fredrick", plus "Good Shepherd" and "Wooden Ships") and the distinctive piano playing of Nicky Hopkins. It also featured that band dabbling in a country rock sound, particularly in "The Farm" and "Song For All Seasons".
