the crooked moon

Preorders Now Open For The Crooked Moon

There’s an interesting 5E-compatible adventure coming to the D&D Beyond store…..it was written by the Actual Play group Legends of Avantris as their first venture into publishing D&D content. The book, adapted from their epic play session series Edge of Midnight, lets you take the world they created into your own home.

A crowdfunding campaign for The Crooked Moon was launched months ago (sorry that we completely missed it) and became the largest 5E Kickstarter to date, raising $4 million  from over 21,000 backers. If you were never told about the Kickstarter either, the book will be sold direcly through D&D Beyond store itself. Preorders opened today.

The Crooked Moon is a 600+ page folk-horror setting for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition that casts players into the sun-starved realm of DruskenvaldAdapted from Legends of Avantris’ acclaimed folk‑horror actual‑play series Edge of Midnight, The Crooked Moon, written for the new fifth edition 2024 core rules, and fully compatible with your 2014 content, brings the folk‑horror genre into 5E, replacing routine dungeon crawls with tales driven by superstition, social tension, and ritual.

Here’s what you get inside:

  • 350‑page adventure path set in Wickermoor Hollow (levels 1‑13)
  • 15 folk‑horror subclasses, 13 lineages, new spells, rituals, items, and Fateweaving rules that bind characters to folkloric consequences
  • 85 folkloric monsters plus 11 multi‑phase boss fights
  • Pre-order bonus exclusives
  • And more!

The Crooked Moon is a two-volume set…Part 1 is the player options and setting guide while Part 2 contains the bestiary, treasury and adventure campaign. While they can be ordered separately, it’d make more sense to get both. The bundle costs $69.99 and will be shipped on June 16.

Mana Project Studio Announces TAZ RPG

Mana Project Studio, a development team whose past products have included the Cowboy Bebop TTRPG, is working on a new one: a wholly original creation they call TAZ. Whether Looney Tunes could sue them, we don’t know, but in this case TAZ stands for Temporary Autonomous Zone.

TAZ is a post-apocalyptic TTRPG set on a dystopian Earth where survivors band together in the aforementioned zones to fight against the terrors of Subterra, an undetground network of cities, not all of them friendly. The surface is uninhabitable, but Subterra is dangerous on its own, with autocratic armies, bioengineered weapons and deadly robots to contend with. You just want to survive, and you’ll have to find a way.

While there’s some amazing technology available on Subterra, it also put you into this situation in the first place. Man’s hubris and greed, yadda yadda. Your characters are equipped with Husks, synthetic bodies capable of superhuman feats. Your Husks can be upgraded over the course of the game, a necessity to face what’s ahead.

TAZ runs on the Resistance System, an engine created by Grant Howitt and Chris Taylor for games such as Spire: The City Must Fall and Heart: The City Beneath, If you’re not familiar with those, that’s fine — this is an altered Resistance System customized for the demands of this game. Mana says it’s possible for you to lose control over your own characters! Better be careful.

The crowdfunding campaign for TAZ will launch sometime next month. Keep watching this Backerkit page for more info.

Console Wars The Card Game Now Available

Console Wars: The Card Game Now Available

Console Wars: The Card Game was announced last year by the creative team XboxEra. After a successful Kickstarter campaign that took in $42,000 (when converted to US dollars), it’s launched as a real retail product you don’t have to pledge to obtain. (Just so we’re clear, it has nothing to do with the book by Blake Harris or the miniseries that came from it. “Console Wars” is not a trademarked phrase.)

In Console Wars: The Card Game, you and your friends play gluttonous AAA video game companies deep in the battle for market domination! First you must grab as many IPs as possible, for you won’t be able to attract fans (or fan cards, in this case) without them. Steal fans from your rivals by releasing new games, or play dirty by throwing down “Action Cards” that take over other studios or introduce PR scandals for your rivals. The first corporation to build four complete sets of Genre Cards is the winner.

“;Console Wars’ is something the entire industry knows about, and actively dislikes,” says Jon Clarke, Co-founder of XboxEra. “So what if we took all that toxicity; all that online hate – and turned it into something positive and fun? Something where we could all collectively point and laugh at how ridiculous the very concept of ‘console warring’ is? That’s how Console Wars: The Card Game came to be. Inspired by many of the card games I already play, I wanted to make something even more strategic, vicious and hilarious. As I’ve witnessed with the playtesting over the last year, I truly believe that’s what Console Wars The Card Game is!”

Console Wars: The Card Game is available now on Amazon in the UK, Europe and North America. Stock is limited for this first batch, so you might want to be quick.

age of umbra

Critical Role Presents Age of Umbra May 29

Critical Role trod new ground with their latest mini-saga, Threshold. Unlike all the other RPG-based stories they’ve weaved up, which tended to be adventure comedies, Threshold was CR’s first attempt at horror. They must have felt inspired enough to try it again: the next mini has been announced and it is also dark and dramatic.

Age of Umbra is what they call this eight-parter set in the Halcyon Domain, a world abandoned by gods and consumed by darkness. The series will follow five people from the isolated community of Desperloch, a place surrounded by bloodthirsty monsters and other nightmares. By the way, the mini also ties into Daggerheart, the upcoming TTRPG designed by Mercer and planned for release May 20, before this campaign starts.

The Halcyon Domain is a lethal, foreboding land where the souls of the dead are cursed to return as twisted, nightmarish forms. A dark, ethereal mass known as the Umbra roams and holds these fiendish monstrosities, further corrupting anything it touches. Sacred Pyres keep the corruption at bay, and small communities endure through cooperation. Out in the beyond, whispers speak of ancient secrets and powers, wonders of a lost age, ready for discovery to those brave enough (or foolish enough) to seek them.

Unlike the previous few minis, everyone’s back for this one: the main Critical Role team you know and love. Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham and Game Master Matther Mercer will play all the parts.

The series will be preceded by an “Episode Zero” where the CR team will develop their characters live, along with locations, adventure hooks, and narrative threads. If you wish not to spoil yourself, the actual story starts the following week, May 29 at 7 PM Pacific / 10 PM Eastern, at any place Critical Role traditionally broadcasts from: Twitch.tv/CriticalRole, YouTube.com/CriticalRole, and beacon.tv.

Return of the Living Dead: The Official TTRPG

Return Of The Living Dead Becomes A Tabletop Game

It was nearly forty years ago that George Romero released his horror classic Return of the Living Dead. It’s been decades, but soon the zombies from that film will rise again…on tabletops across America. Evil Genius Games presents the official Return of the Living Dead TTRPG, launching its own Kickstarter soon.

What’s the backstory here? Well, believe it or not, George based his movie “on true events.” At least that’s what the makers are claiming. “He was forced to remove certain facts and the incident was covered up, but now the living dead have returned! Return of the Living Dead brings you endless morbid zombie mayhem. Tear them apart. Blow them up. Burn them to a crisp. They just keep coming!”

  • Rules for zombification and the deadly 245 Trioxin that causes it.
  • The dead rise! Encounter zombies that are smart, fast, and near indestructible.
  • Learn how to defeat an enemy that cannot die with new incapacitation rules and new equipment designed to battle the undead.
  • Special zombie types including the Tarman, Split Dogs, Half-Corpses, skeletal Boners, and more!
  • Experience new classes that let you survive the zombie hordes, take command of them, or control your urges as one of them.
  • Choose from thematic new backgrounds and professions.
  • Hop right into a pre-written adventure, each set in a different decade.

Return of the Living Dead: The Official TTRPG runs on the Everyday Heroes engine, which was developed by Evil Genius for the RPG of that same name. The system was itself based on d20 Modern and updated for the 5th edition. “It offers flexible rules to create contemporary characters, and provides everything needed to run a modern-day campaign: action, combat, hacking, and much more,” they say.

More about Return of the Living Dead: The Official TTRPG will be revealed when the Kickstarter launches, which shouldn’t be too long now. You can’t keep the undead down for long!

pax east

The Many Many Hidden Indie Treasures OF PAX East

PAX East starts not too long from now, May 8. Just about every major video game and tabletop publisher will be there, but we’d like to spotlight a few of the smaller, scrappier publishers and developers on the show floor. There isn’t enough space to mention every single one of them, but you should keep a lookout for these folks…

9th Level Games, Booth 10105: An indie tabletop roleplaying publisher with a mission to introduce more first-timers to the world of TTRPGs. They produce a line of simplified TT games called “Funshot,” with titles like Pigeon’s Eleven and Sentai & Sensibility, that run on their own engine called the Polymorph Rules System.

ByteRockers Games, Booth 17096: Based out of Berlin, Germany, ByteRockers has existed since 2008, contains nearly 40 members, and has quite a few indie titles to their record. They’re best known for the titles Insurmountable and Beat Slayer, but at PAX they’ll be showing off their latest projects Net.Attack(), Let Them Trade, Constance, Solnox – Grimoire of Seasons, The Berlin Apartment, and Exovia.

Cleromancy Games, Booth 10099: Cleromancy claims they’ve made the first wearable strategy trading card game. They call it “Worn Wanderers” and the battlefield is your shirt. You wear your army as pins and other people with similar pins can challenge you. If you try out the game, they’ll give you your own convention-exclusive pin to start you off.

Akupara Games, Booths 15090 and 15091: An indie game studio based in Los Angeles, Akupara Games considers itself an “indie for indies,” and by that they mean they’re a studio that provides support to other indie studios through development, publishing, porting, and advising. Each project, they say, receives a unique experience and personalized support.

Black Oak Workshop, Booth 10093: Producer of accessories for tabletop games, like treasure chests, torches and dice bags (and of course, their own unique style of dice).

Bitmask Games, Booth 16108: I admit I know these people. Bitmask Games developed NESMaker, the software that provides shortcuts to NES game development, which I’ve used myself. They’re working on a more advanced successor called Retro Game Forge that will be capable of developing for multiple retro systems: NES, SNES and Genesis. It’ll be a while before RGF is finished, but perhaps you’ll be able to tinker with it at the booth.

Cubicorn Games, Booth 16110: Currently working on Super Cucumber, a 2D action-platformer that boasts of over one hundred hand-crafted levels. “Become the greatest aardvark superhero in the world,” they’ve teased.

Daruma Games, Booth 15104: Currently working on Sol Mates, a multiplayer party game where up to four players can take on missions locally or online. “Your ship is constantly under siege by pirates, black holes, and bizarre cosmic dangers, and only tight teamwork will keep you from getting blown to bits. Steer, shield, and shoot your way through procedurally generated challenges, where one wrong move could land you face-to-face with a giant alien crab!”

Cheer Up Games, Booth 11086: This team is known for the lighter side of party games, with titles like Cheer Up, Swearmints and Drawing Swords. “Love to laugh? You’ve come to the right booth,” they say. “Come say hi and play with us, and bring some friends!”

If you want the full list, we’ll leave the link here. PAX East runs in Boston, Massachusetts from May 8 through May 11.

critical role thresher

Critical Role’s Thresher Premieres Tonight

Tonight marks the beginning of the next mini-campaign from Critical Role! As we’ve covered before, the team puts together these experiments and short adventures while they’re crafting their next huge epic quest. In the recent past we’ve had the summer camp romp Wildemount Wildlings and before that, the four-part miniseries Exandria Unlimited. Up until now, most of CR’s shows have been comedic adventures. That’ll change in a big way with this next one.

It’s called Thresher, and it’s a two-parter presented in cooperation with 12-Sided Studios and Paragon Pictures. It’s Critical Role’s first cinematic actual play horror game. Here’s how they describe it:

Set in the crushing silence of the ocean’s abyss, the series follows a fractured crew aboard a claustrophobic submersible on a mission to investigate Rán Boer Station—a long-abandoned geothermal facility lost to time and pressure. As paranoia sets in and mutiny brews, ancient forces begin to stir in the deep.

Blending sci-fi horror with signature Critical Role storytelling, Thresher is a chilling descent into psychological unraveling, buried secrets, and monstrous threats—where survival depends on more than air supply. Crafted using the Illuminated Worlds system, the series features immersive Unreal Engine environments and a cast of powerhouse talent from across TTRPG, gaming, and screen.

Said talent includes players Abubakar Salim (House of the Dragon, Raised by Wolves), Jacqueline Emerson (The Hunger Games, Good American Family), Mark “Sherlock” Hulmes a.k.a Mara (High Rollers, Candlekeep Mysteries), Jane Douglas (Outside Xbox, Oxventure) and Noshir Dalal (Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon Forbidden West), with Jasper William Cartwright (3 Black Halflings, Dimension 20) serving as Game Master.

Thresher starts tonight at 7 PM Pacific / 10 PM Eastern, at any place Critical Role traditionally broadcasts from: Twitch.tv/CriticalRole, YouTube.com/CriticalRole, and beacon.tv.

Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid

Clash Of Clans Comes To Tabletop With Epic Raid

A mobile game remade as a tabletop game? Is that possible? It may not be for Candy Crush, but the strategic mechanics of Clash of Clans translate a little better. The hit phone game is coming to TTRPG form as Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid, and the crowdfunding campaign launches sometime in the next few weeks.

Franchise owners Supercell have enlisted developer Maestro Media to handle the transition, and Maestro in turn has hired game designers Eric M. Lang (Marvel: United, Star Wars: The Card Game, XCOM: The Board Game, Blood Rage) and Ken Gruhl (Life in Reterra, Mantis, Happy Salmon) to bring it to life. Gameplay elements haven’t been fully revealed, but they will basically be the same as in the electronic original: to build defenses, deploy units, and raid friends’ bases.

“Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid is a groundbreaking experience that brings the beloved universe to life like never before,” boasts Javon Frazier, Founder and CEO of Maestro Media. “With the genius of legendary designers Eric Lang and Ken Gruhl and our incredible partnership with Supercell, we’ve crafted a game that will surprise and delight and will be a must-have tabletop adventure that captures the heart of Clash of Clans.”

Andrea Fasulo, Head of Global Licensing, adds, “We’ve always been passionate about creating memorable experiences for our players, and Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid is an exciting new chapter in that journey. Partnering with Maestro Media allows us to bring the strategy and excitement of Clash of Clans to life in a whole new way.”

More about Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid will be revealed when the Kickstarter kicks off, which should be soon.

titmouse

Preorders Now Open For Titmouse’s Adult Party Game

Last October, the animation studio Titmouse surprised everyone with a venture into the tabletop gaming market – and not just that, but a truly crazy offering no one had tried before. Titmouse presents Drunkards, Druggies & Delinquents.– a TTRPG for adults 21 and over where the penalty for taking damage is to take a drink. The project was crowdfunded last fall; it becomes open to the public this week.

The story goes that Titmouse has its own internal tabletop game room and this project came about initially from just goofing around. Originally it was meant as a more serious, grounded TTRPG project, but it quickly changed into something wilder. “We created this game to bring people together over laughs, mayhem, and a little controlled chaos,” says founder Chris Prynoski. “It’s all about cutting loose, embracing the ridiculous, and making memories—fuzzy or not.”

Drunkards, Druggies & Delinquents contains a lot of great art. Since Titmouse is an animation studio, they had connections to pull from all over the place. This is a full list of contributors and you will surely recognize some of these names: Chris Prynoski (founder of Titmouse), Pendleton Ward, Phil Bourassa, Antonio Canobbio, Christy Karacas, Will Carsola, Songgu Kwon, Jenny Goldberg, Ben Edlund, Matt Furie, Abby Jame, Sean Glaze, SKINNER, Heather Mahler, Dave Cooper, Coop, Ian Jones-Quartey, Dave Johnson, Maddy Brewer, Erol Otus, Dakota Cates, Jody Schaeffer, Cheese Hasselberger, Andy Suriano, James Martin, Johnny Ryan, and Todd James.

Inside the box:
  • A zine-style Game Master (GM) guide packed with quest prompts, faction lore, optional “House Chaos” rules, and DIY mechanics that reward ridiculous behavior, punish logic, and favor storytelling over math
  • Pre-generated Delinquent character sheets featuring off-the-wall archetypes like the “Dwarven Hypeman” or “Witch Who Thinks It’s Her Birthday”
  • Custom adversary and item cards that introduce everything from “Magic Edibles of Doubt” to “Cranky Talking Furniture”
  • Optional substance prompts that can be swapped for dares, jokes, or purely fictional play

The basic set contains 20 monster cards, 24 character class cards, 36 equipment cards, 48 item cards, 12 character record sheets, 12 adventure record sheets and more. You can preorder your copy of Drunkards, Druggies & Delinquents at TitmouseStuff.com (You’re 21 or over, right?) Copies will start shipping soon.
