Voting Now Open For 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards

Have a particular favorite anime that came out within the last year? Now’s the time to show it some love. Crunchyroll has just opened the voting booths for their 2025 Anime Awards, which are fan-chosen. You can see the full list of nominees below, but before we get to that, we also know who will be attending the awards…

Mike Wheeler is back and this time he’s brought his goofy friend in the hat. Finn Wolfhard will be attending his second Anime Awards, and now Gaten Matarazzo will be attending his first. They’ll be joined by a large lineup of talent from all over the world, from Japanese actors Dean Fujioka, Kanata Hongo and Maya Matsuoka, to English professional boxer Ben Whittaker, to Italian singer-songwriter Damiano David, to snowboarder Chloe Kim. Voice actress Sally Amaki and entertainer Jon Kabira will serve as hosts. Also President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation Hiroki Totoki will deliver opening remarks, because he owns the company.

“The Crunchyroll Anime Awards are one of the most important times of year for fans because we hear directly from them on what anime they love and get to honor the creative community behind that love,” said Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll. “Anime continues to deeply resonate emotionally with fans, and anime’s biggest night of the year is sure to invoke a lot of joy and pride amongst the anime community—fans and creators alike. This year’s nominees represent more than 50 series and films developed by more than 35 talented studios.”

Elle: Legally Blonde Origins

Elle is coming to Prime video! Reese Witherspoon is taking Legally Blonde fans back to where it all began. The actress and producer has officially announced a new TV series titled ELLE, a prequel to the beloved franchise. While we don’t have a trailer or teaser just yet, the project is already stirring up excitement as it explores Elle Woods’ origin story.

Instead of stepping into her iconic role, Witherspoon, now 48, is taking on an executive producer role. Let’s face it, she’s a little too old to play a high schooler these days! Enter Lexi Minetree, a rising star at 22, who will take on the role of a teenage Elle Woods. The show will dive into her early years, showing how this fashionable, determined young woman first found the confidence, charm, and ambition that made her famous before she set foot in Harvard Law School.

Minetree, who’s relatively new to the scene, has already impressed Witherspoon and the team with her ability to channel that signature Pink energy. Fans are definitely curious to see how she puts her own spin on such a beloved character.

In the original movie, her dad, Daniel Woods, was a successful businessman, and her mom, Susan, was a former sorority queen turned housewife. They were portrayed as rich and glamorous, which meant Elle’s upbringing was a bit sheltered. Crunchyroll’s Spring 2025 Lineup Is Here

The flowers are blooming, and so is Crnnchyroll with over 30 new anime seasons coming to its library in the next few weeks. Among the sea of isekai, romcoms and reincarnations, you’ll find anticipated returns like Fire Force Season 3, Black Butler’s Emerald Witch arc, the My Hero Academia spinoff Vigilantes, and of course, more One Piece.

Believe it or not, there’s an Anne of Green Gables anime adaption coming later this week (Anne Shirley), as well as a show based on Guilty Gear, for all you Bridget stans out there. Witch Watch, the most hyped romcom anime in some time, premieres April 6 not just on Crunchyroll but on several other streaming services as well.

What Is Lilly Wachowski’s Next Project About?

Famed director Lilly Wachowski, 50% of the team that created the Matrix movies, has announced her next project…which is pretty far from something as mainstream as The Matrix. In fact you’ll likely only hear about it from websites like this one.

The title is Cassie Workman is Witchy AF, and it’s described as “a new comedic documentary series.” Is it an actual documentary, or a fake one? That is something we can’t tell. Everything that describes it is right on the edge, and it could go either way.

The show is set in a fictional occult bookstore owned by the show’s creator and host, Cassie Workman. Workman is a real person; she’s an Australian comedian, writer, musician and actor. But the press release states she’s playing a fictional version of herself, and since the shop’s not real either, and it’s billed as a comedy, that means this is a fake mockumentary thing, right?

Well. Cassie Workman is Witchy AF will “explore the history and philosophy of occultism and magic,” and cover such topics as “Aleister Crowley, John Dee, the secret history of Hollywood, and Santa Muert,” which were actual things…so is it a documentary after all? But then there’s this…Cassie’s co-host is a puppet, a giant raven in a king’s outfit seen in the picture. The series boasts the involvement of puppetry created by Direct Message and practical SFX make-up from Monster in My Closet (Smile 2, Hocus Pocus).

So if it’s about MAGIC….what kind of magic are we talking about? The kind of “magic” that people like Crowley and Dee thought they could do, or the kind that requires special effects departments and puppet crews? This makes a difference. IF Cassie Workman is Witchy AF is a fantasy mockumentary in the vein of What We Do In The Shadows, sign me up. If it’s just footage of people flipping tarot cards and then nothing happens, count me out.

There;s no word yet on where Cassie Workman is Witchy AF could wind up, or when it could be released. But production just wrapped filming in NYC, and it likely has several months of editing ahead of itself.

A24 and Amazon Prime Video are gearing up to drop Overcompensating, a sharp and side-splitting comedy arriving in May 2025. Created, produced, and starring Benito Skinner, the series is executive produced by Skinner, Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Ali Goodwin, and Scott King. Inspired by Skinner’s own experiences before coming out, Overcompensating takes a hilariously unfiltered dive into masculinity, identity, and the absurd lengths people go to in order to maintain a facade.

Skinner steps into the cleats of Benny, a college football star blessed with athletic talent, undeniable popularity, and an army of female admirers, including Esther (played by supermodel Kaia Gerber). The only catch? Benny is secretly gay and determined to keep it under wraps. To prove—mostly to himself—that he’s straight, he dials his masculinity up to comically ridiculous levels, masking his true identity behind forced bravado and exaggerated hetero energy.
