Good Fences - It Takes All Kinds
On our recent trip to Nevada, we passed several different kinds of snow fencing. I started snapping photos in Oregon.
Little did we know that the next day we would actually be driving in the snow. In a Corvette, no less! If that didn't add some stress and/or excitement to the day! Whew. I was glad when we finally got far enough south in Nevada to get out of the snow zone.
As you can see, it takes all kinds of fencing to help keep the drifting snow off of the roadways in the winter.
I am joining up with the Run*A*Round Ranch and the Good Fences meme which was recently started to take the place of Friday's Fences.

Skywatch Friday - Winter Sunset
Most of the fish houses were off of the frozen lake when these photos were taken a few weekends ago. The lake is totally devoid of them now that the March 3rd deadline has come and gone. Hopefully Spring is not far behind!

Snow Drags
I went and watched my very first snowmobile drag races on Saturday. Stood on the frozen lake while the racers went flashing by. It was an interesting and exciting experience. Until my feet got too cold. I need a set of liners for my boots to help keep my toes warm.
There were all kinds of sleds being raced. From older models such as these that could pop a "wheelie"...
...to a more modern style like these...
...to these lean mean racing machines. Even the graphics are intimidating!
I noticed that some of the sleds and their drivers had to cross the scale after their races. Not sure if it was just the winner of the heat or what. It looked official, that is for sure.
In between the heats, sweeping of the racing lanes and some other kind of grooming took place. This contraption looked and sounded like a modified weed eater machine.
Some of the teams have invested quite a bit of money into their operation including their haulers. Check out the glass doors on the back of the trailer. Keeps the heat in so the team can stay warm! (on a side note...all of these rigs were parked on the ice.)
Here's one way to move a small racing sled around. Many of the larger sleds had their rear track up on rack that was pushed around on the ice (see the one Yamaha photo above).
Why would they move the sleds around like this? To not chew up the ice in the pits and damage the sled track. Look at the metal studs on them! That is how they get traction on the ice. I wouldn't want to get run over by one of those!
All in all, it was a fun couple of hours outdoors watching a new sport. You should try it sometime. Just bring warm clothes and wear snow boots to keep your feet warm. :-)

Three Men and a Fish House
This scene is such a far cry from my post on Thursday. Not only did we get about 10" or so of snow this past week, the temperatures have dropped well below freezing, especially when you factor in the windchill.
Yesterday morning I got up and looked out across the lake as the sun was coming up. After I got the coffee brewing and turned the heat up, I noticed activity out on the ice. Yep, the ice fisherman were getting ready for their idea of fun and games.
Here it was, not quite 7:30 a.m., and the outdoor temperature was just under -19 degrees Fahrenheit. In other words - COLD! (Of course, it was chilly inside, too. I don't care for electric baseboard heat!)
I watched two guys with their auger start drilling through the ice.
Then came the portable ice house. I think they were set up closer to the shore and decided to move further out closer to the budding fish house village. This fish house is a pop-up tent style contraption.
Next came their buddy, carrying his gear including a folding chair. You need a place to sit, after all!
I guess after a consultation, another hole was drilled and the fish house repositioned. Then they disappeared inside to start fishing.
Around 11:30 a.m., I looked out again and they had packed up their fish house and were getting ready to leave. Either a) they caught their limit; b) they ran out of hot coffee (or beer); or c) they just got too cold and decided to call it quits. I doubt the answer is "c". These Minnesotans are a hardy bunch. I don't know how they do it.
It has been so cold, my overhead garage door opener has frozen (at least I suspect it has). I will be calling for help on Monday since my vehicle is essentially trapped inside. There is only one entrance into the garage...the overhead door. This is a row of detached garages and none of them have a secondary entrance. Ahhh...winter in Minnesnowta.
