Sunday Stamps II - 135

1964, Pakistan, Save the Monuments of Nubia

When the Aswan Dam was being built, UNESCO helped with a publicity drive to educate the rest of the world about the importance and value of the Nubian Monuments which would have been flooded if something wasn't done. Several countries issued stamps in support. The top stamp shows carved figures at Abu Simbel. These were cut into blocks, numbered and reassembled above the new dam. On the right is shown the Temple at Karnak reflected in the Sacred Lake.

Sunday Stamps II - 47

1951, Pakistan, 4 annas
designer: A R Chughtai

Pakistan continued to use Indian stamps for a few months after partition (August 1947)  with overprinted stamps in use until 1949. This Saracenic leaf pattern has Pakistan written in Urdu in the centre of the crescent with the values written in English and Urdu at the bottom left and right side plates.  It is one of a set of nine stamps issued for Independence Day 1951 designed by Abdur Rahman Chughtai (1897-1975) who is considered the national artist of Pakistan.
