falling water

where I live, there are many waterfalls - these are perhaps the most picturesque

but, there has been so little rain lately, that at least two of these have no flow (Tews and Tiffany) and the other two are more like a trickle.

water

For all of my life, I have always lived near water - in many cases within walking distance of a lake, a creek, canal, river, or a pond.  I cannot imagine living somewhere without a body of water,  but I also cannot imagine going through some of the cataclysmic flooding such water can bring.  Any floods near me have been, well, not devastating.

I am fortunate to live near Niagara Falls.  And it's fortunate that I really like it there.  Sure, there is a bit of tacky touristy hell there, but the falls themselves are magnificent and I will happily drive past them at any time of the year.  Especially in winter.

Oceans are okay, though with the latest tsunami threats in the Pacific, I'd be happier on a calm cruise in Estonia.

maybe add a few islands
or a waterfall

Rivers in a city are especially attractive as they provide an opportunity for bridges.  I have been known to go miles out of my way for a waterfall or bridge.  (I've been to Milford Sound, but not Prague)

sometimes, you can't really escape water, and that's fine with me
my happy place: anywhere near water

Watkins Glen State Park is in the Finger Lakes region of New York.  A two mile hike will take you past 19 waterfalls.  Here are four of them.  Altogether there are 832 staircase steps, which should give you a good workout.

a waterfall tour that is definitely worth the challenge of the climb through the gorge.

city of waterfalls

Hamilton has several dozens of of waterfalls,of which these are the grandest.

The pandemic has inadvertently helped curb some of the environmental damage done to them over the last few years from the crowds of people visiting, since no crowds are allowed.

Sunday Stamps - 'W'

1955, Rhodesia and Nyasaland

David Livingstone was the first European to set eyes on these waterfalls of the Zambezi River which he named after Queen Victoria. Until the railroad was built in 1905, very few other Europeans visited the area.  By 1955, it was possible to fly over the falls.  Livingstone can be seen in the foreground being carried by his servants. During the wet season, the width of the falls can grow to almost 1 mile wide. It is divided into five separate falls: Devils Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, and the Eastern Cataract.

Niagara

Canada

The American (foreground) with Bridal Veil (the single fall just beyond the American) are completely on the US side of the border. Horseshoe (background) is mostly within Canada with only a small portion of the north east corner in the US. The Niagara River flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, and while the falls aren't exceptionally high, they are very wide at over 3,400 feet from the extreme American side to the extreme Canadian side.

Dear Bella,
Mom had her eye surgery last month. Brother-in-law died 21st and buried last Sunday. Fire at High School last Thurs. Damage confined to one area and school open tomorrow. Saw it right after it started. Go by there on way home from work. 7 inches snow last week-end. Love, Faith.

this deserves a long letter, or phone call, in return!
