reading

I love this one of the little polar bear reading, illustrated by Hans de Beer

Ot en Sien,  illustrated by Cornelis Jetses

hopelessly old fashioned, and no longer read in schools, but I still have  the books I collected to learn Dutch when I was living there.

I've not actually read this book, (illustrations by Quentin Blake)  but I love the movie and will watch it every time it's on tv.
It may surprise some people, but for someone who is terrified of spiders, this was one of my favourite stories.  illustrated by Garth Williams

turtles

The spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata) is on the left, while Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii)  is peeking out on the right. Both are illustrated by Sarah Still (these are very different than her larger than life paintings)

I'm not sure why he is Franklin in English and Benjamin in French, but this Canadian turtle is illustrated by Brenda Clark with the stories written by Paulette Bourgeois

Sunday Stamps - Y

Snoopy has always been my favourite Peanuts character — doing his happy dance, or as the WWI Flying Ace on his Sopwith Camel biplane/doghouse. Snoopy began his fantasy career as a fighter pilot in 1965. I always thought his scarf was red (as it is usually shown), but this 2001 stamp has him bedecked in yellow.

And, as a bonus (while researching the colour of his scarf) it seems that during a story line from August 7-10, 1968, for the one and only time, it was revealed to be Snoopy's birthday!

August 10th

His first appearance was in October 1950, and he would have been about a year old then, so by now would be an astounding 70  — or 490 dog  — years old this weekend.

2017 Russia, Literary Heritage/Russian Fables
designer: V Beltukov

The Rooster and the Pearl is a Russian fable by V.K. Trediakovsky. It also seems to be accredited to other authors, including Aesop.
"While pecking in a compost mound,
A Rooster came upon a Pearl
And cried, amazed 'What's this I found?!
It has no use in all the world'
What fools are men to treasure such
Tough grains that no one can digest
Now, barley does not shine as much,
But fills the belly. Which is best?"

Thus, often in the world of man, a fools deems useless what he does not understand

2013 Canada Children's Literature
illustrator and author: Marie-Louise Gay

This stamp features the cover illustration from the book Read Me A Story, by Marie-Louise Gay. The series of books, first published in 1999, tells of nine year old Stella and her four year old brother Sam. Stella has a wild imagination and Sam is curious and inquisitive. In this story Stella introduces her younger brother to the pleasures of reading. It's been described as a model of positive sibling relations and the way books and stories can play into everyday life.

2015 Germany Asterix and Obelix
designer and engraver: Thomas Steinacker

Prior to the release of the latest book (the 34th) in October 2015, Deutsche Post issued a special series of stamps featuring the comic book heroes Asterix and Obelix. Thjis stamp is of Obelix (the big, sturdy one) with the other two stamps showing Obelix's dog, Dogmatix (or Idéfix as he is known in every other language), and Asterix (the small, cunning one).  The series was originally written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. A Charlie Brown Christmas was first shown on television in 1965. For the 50th anniversary, the USPS has issued a booklet of stamps with 10 still frames from the animation.
