About Me

I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

News, Views Etc . . . Forthcoming Events Saturday 4th - Friday 10th January 2020

We are at war with nature, therefore we are at war with ourselves, we can only 'win' that war by losing everything.

But if we have the grace to surrender (suicide pills? Compulsory neutering?), nature may recover quite quickly?

That is the thought for the year, bearing in mind that Australia is on fire like never before, Delhi is looking at having its first frost since the last ice-age, yet we were about to drown here a week ago, while everyone's glaciers retreat faster than the climate-change models have been predicting they will - since the 1970's when we had 50-years to sort it out, now we may only have ten.

But, in the meantime, toys and their collecting make a fine distraction, and if you collect plastic ones you're helping keep them out of the Great Pacific Garbage Dump! Which is a serious misnomer for what should be called the 'Great Pacific Plastic Raft' or the Great Pacific Micro-polymer Factory!

Which leaves me to cover a few other bits and bobs . . .

Season's greetings

Christmas has almost left us, but the tree's up 'till Monday . . .

. . . and six more decorations have gone on somehow!

The final sextuplet of choccy-treats included two figurals; a rather deformed elf and a jolly little snowman.

The blog received its first Christmas card! You can tell from the group of reprobates involved that it winged its way here from New York, and it appears they are about to get a sobering soaking from the authorities, come to break-up the fun . . . careful with that axe Eugene!

Paddington will sort it all out using a bucket-full of icing sugar, a decorator's ladder and a feather-pillow with a hole in it - I'm quite sure!

Received with Thanks

As well as posing an eCard, Brian also informed me he is shooting his firefighters for the forthcoming firefighter page, and it must be said friends and followers of the Blog seem to been more enthusiastically receptive to news of a firefighter's page, than for the paratrooper/parachute toys page which was my preferred choice for first in the queue! I guess I will have to adjust my plans or get them both done with more speed . . . I've been doing more work on the para's over the break; than I have the firefighters!!

The day after Peter Evans' little parcel arrived in time to post last time, Hermes dropped-off a Christmas cornucopia of a donation from Chris Smith, but he told me not to open it until after Crimbo, so I didn't . . . but now I have! I have since been working on a few posts about it, but to be honest it was such a high-quality 'job lot' (see what you can spot), it will be contributing to posts for a long time to come!

Angelo's next post however, was held-up by my needing his advice on a couple of images I wanted to add to it, but that resulted in whole 'nother post! Consequently, and because I've intentionally had a lazy holiday, they will both post next week or the week after now.

There might have been one or two other bits come in, but I've had a quiet time on purpose and not even gone out much over the holiday, to which end eMails will be addressed/replied-to next week, but thanks to everyone for everything and all help!

H is for How they Come In

There is one from the start of the holiday, and then this week was a bumper post-Christmas chuck-out fest!

This was the earlier lot, and was pretty non-descript Chinastuff apart from the branded Papo dinosaur in grey with a moving lower-jaw who is rather fine, but I like the kerthunkersaurus with his radioactive thorn-suit!

But then this week it all went a bit critical on the finds front, with these five bags on Tuesday at a quid each; mixed farm, zoo and 'funimals' with a bit of Erzgebige and a few of the Kellogg's premium animals. Three tailless horses went straight to recycling, but the rest will be sorted into the pile with the animal element from Chris's parcel, to which they've already been joined!

I knew there were two more, as I'd only had a fiver on Tuesday and had to umm'n'arh on which five bags to purchase, so I went back on the off chance they were still there today (Thursday) and they were!

You can see why they were the two I left on the first visit, mostly vinyl Britains in one and mostly small-scale/common in the other, but I took them on the second opportunity for the little Hong Kong seated tiger and the HK-copy of a Charbens wagon horse.

Meanwhile 75p in another charity-shop secured more Erzgebirge! Seen on the left is that purchase, with all the week's finds on the right, it was the figure which prompted the payment, they are often quite worn but this one is clean.

Note also the unusual (or 'less common') decoration on the sun-faded lot, our childhood ones had the commoner two-window arrangement of the left hand cottages, but our church was the same as the one with the right lot, although it had a small onion-tower straddling the roof-ridge.

F is for Found Objects

I once designed a whole range of street & garden furniture, shelters and plant cloches round some broken bits I found in a car-park in Stockwell! It was (still is) a standard materials exercise in the first year of most art and/or design courses in most colleges and universities, along with the 'group bridge-build and test' project, and it also teaches you to keep your eyes peeled!

So I found this in a car-park in Basingrad two weeks ago; slightly scuffed, I think it's the comm's-tower for a large (but cheapish) battleship or aircraft carrier toy, but it looks just like a bit like one of those Arco/board-game robots, except it's a little bigger - commander, or heavy-weapons robot perhaps!

The Lost Patrol

December's 'eye-candy' have now been spotted in New York, patrolling even denser Jungle!

They Also Serve Who Lie Around Doing Bugger-All!

My assistant got exactly what she wanted for Christmas, a pile of wrapping-paper with sticky-bits on it!

New Year's Libations!

As well as the rowdies seen higher-up this post, Brian and Theo van de Weerden have sent these in the last few weeks with other images and I thought they'd go well together to toast in the new Year. A Mecki monk (or monk Mecki?) and the Good Soldier Švejk from Prague! The Good Soldier is either poured-resin or a chalkware/plaster from the look of him; the Mecki-monk is a late, all plastic one and carries the same gum-ball capsule-machine prize bier-stein I gave to one of my Palitoy Action Men 45-odd years ago!

He had a stool (my Action Man) made from a pizza stand (what happened to them?), little green camping stool with four legs (they used to hold the pizza box-lid up?), and he would sit with his back to the Spartan personnel carrier's main door, supping his stein, while his mate (sitting on the Jungle Explorer's folding stool) had a can of Heineken converted from a key-ring, also from a gum-ball capsule I suspect!

Anyway; many-thanks to both for the images and - here's-cheers and a happy New Year to all loyal readers! Hic!

M is for Men (and Mecki) Behaving Badly

Or . . . P is for Preening Pants-down Pooping Presidents, Piss-heads and Personalities

This post has grown over the last 72 hours from what might have been a couple of collages to a fuller round-up of characters and caricatures real and imagined, most behaving badly! All the images - with the exception of a return from The Work's Trumpton - courtasy of Mr. Berke in New York, but sent at various times from 2016, through to the other day, so many thanks to Brian.

Albert Einstein; Andy Capp; Crapping Trump; Crappy; Crappy President; Dead Kennedy; Dead Presidents; Donald Trump; Donald Trump Crapping; Drinking Andy Capp; Drinking Mecki; Drunk Mecki; Gertrinken Mecki; Homer Simpson; JFK; John F Kennedy; Key Chain; Key Ring; Key-Fob; Mecki The Hedgehog; Mecki The Hedgehog Drunk; Pooping President; President Lincoln; President of the USA; Shitting; Shitty President; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Trump Donald; Trumpundbrexit;
Possibly the two most famous reprobates in modern English-speaking culture, both pretty hopeless, both fans of a beer or two and both would be less than nothing without the efforts of the long-suffering womenfolk in their lives! I say 'less than nothing' as neither has amounted to much in the course of events as it is!

The figure on the left - for those of you who have been in a coma since the die mauer came down - is none other than Homer Simpson, but many of you may need to be told that the figure on the right is Andy Capp, but, not the Germans, where I belive he is a well know (and re-named?) import.

Albert Einstein; Andy Capp; Crapping Trump; Crappy; Crappy President; Dead Kennedy; Dead Presidents; Donald Trump; Donald Trump Crapping; Drinking Andy Capp; Drinking Mecki; Drunk Mecki; Gertrinken Mecki; Homer Simpson; JFK; John F Kennedy; Key Chain; Key Ring; Key-Fob; Mecki The Hedgehog; Mecki The Hedgehog Drunk; Pooping President; President Lincoln; President of the USA; Shitting; Shitty President; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Trump Donald; Trumpundbrexit;
Seen before, so a quick reprise and sadly nothing fictional about this international joke, it's the pooping, preening-pratt President himself! Carried by The Works over here about a year ago, however it appears that great minds think alike, as retailers over the pond . . .

Albert Einstein; Andy Capp; Crapping Trump; Crappy; Crappy President; Dead Kennedy; Dead Presidents; Donald Trump; Donald Trump Crapping; Drinking Andy Capp; Drinking Mecki; Drunk Mecki; Gertrinken Mecki; Homer Simpson; JFK; John F Kennedy; Key Chain; Key Ring; Key-Fob; Mecki The Hedgehog; Mecki The Hedgehog Drunk; Pooping President; President Lincoln; President of the USA; Shitting; Shitty President; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Trump Donald; Trumpundbrexit;
. . . are offering this variation - he appears to be evacuating solids! Euwe! The store Ollie's could be the source - if you're looking for a late stocking-filler idea - but Jiahua Trading Inc., are claiming for it and - like the UK one - it's also in the form of a key-ring.

Albert Einstein; Andy Capp; Crapping Trump; Crappy; Crappy President; Dead Kennedy; Dead Presidents; Donald Trump; Donald Trump Crapping; Drinking Andy Capp; Drinking Mecki; Drunk Mecki; Gertrinken Mecki; Homer Simpson; JFK; John F Kennedy; Key Chain; Key Ring; Key-Fob; Mecki The Hedgehog; Mecki The Hedgehog Drunk; Pooping President; President Lincoln; President of the USA; Shitting; Shitty President; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Trump Donald; Trumpundbrexit;
However, and returning to fictional characters and their love of beer . . . Mecki's drunk as a skunk (not sure how close hedgehogs are to skunks anyway?) and courting a lamp-post! But if you will elect to have a night-out with the other two, it's a foregone conclusion you'll be in trouble!

Albert Einstein; Andy Capp; Crapping Trump; Crappy; Crappy President; Dead Kennedy; Dead Presidents; Donald Trump; Donald Trump Crapping; Drinking Andy Capp; Drinking Mecki; Drunk Mecki; Gertrinken Mecki; Homer Simpson; JFK; John F Kennedy; Key Chain; Key Ring; Key-Fob; Mecki The Hedgehog; Mecki The Hedgehog Drunk; Pooping President; President Lincoln; President of the USA; Shitting; Shitty President; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Trump Donald; Trumpundbrexit;
This was shot in an NY gift shop a couple of years ago, and they managed to get Trumps G7 Summit conference-pose - I'm going to cross my arms and stare past you all while doing la-la-la's in my head - some months before he did it . . . acting like a petulant child in front of the worlds 6-other main leaders, their number 2's and their entourages!

Albert Einstein; Andy Capp; Crapping Trump; Crappy; Crappy President; Dead Kennedy; Dead Presidents; Donald Trump; Donald Trump Crapping; Drinking Andy Capp; Drinking Mecki; Drunk Mecki; Gertrinken Mecki; Homer Simpson; JFK; John F Kennedy; Key Chain; Key Ring; Key-Fob; Mecki The Hedgehog; Mecki The Hedgehog Drunk; Pooping President; President Lincoln; President of the USA; Shitting; Shitty President; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com; Trump Donald; Trumpundbrexit;
It's a hell of a line-up! Cheers again Brian!

I just like the thought that starting a side-collection of pants-down, pooping, presidents is a very real 'thing', with at least two key-rings and probably some of those Spanish terracotta 'crappers'!

M is for More on Mecki

Mr Berke of New York sent these into the blog, he bought them many years ago in Germany, and hopes to follow-up further, with more of the little Mecki figures, but it might be a year or two before he digs them out of the stash - a situation I can sympathise with!

There's something slightly disturbing about a lady-mouse with bare-legs in tights or stockings! And what's happened to Mr. Mouse's ears, is he trying to do a Micky impersonation? That's Micky the mouse, not Micky the Mrs. Hedgehog. It's as if they never finished them?

Threading a needle and picking Edelweiss of a cliff . . . they can be easier to find! Another worry is how many real hedgehogs were used in the production of the studio hedgehog puppets; that doesn't look like faux-fur to me! Indeed they are really gnomes with a whole-hedgehog head-transplant!

I love the little appfelsaft glass, I have many happy memories of stopping in these big roadside 'country-club'/beer hall/restaurant things in the meadow-valleys of Bavaria or Wuttenberg and having a large glass of ice-cold apple-juice; huge wooden chalets, with painted murals and colourful window-boxes, tables out in the sun and being allowed to say "Noch-mal" or "Eine-mal" and having the waitress tick my beer-mat with her biro!

Meanwhile Macki and Mucki are about to dive into a blank-monge! Funny; you give small black eyes to an alien in a sci-fi movie = evil; give the same eyes to a stuffed hedgehog = cute!

Saving frogs was never more salient than now, to be honest thought, that frog looks either dead and beyond help, or very hung-over! While I'm not sure if he's planting something exotic in the right-hand image, or cursing the spread of the dreaded wild-garlic to his allotment?

The reverse of the cards; thanks Brian, with these and Peter's group the other-day we have definitely 'informed, educated or entertained' the audience about Mecki, here at the Better Blogging Corporation!

F is for Five Do Follow-ups

Tying-up a few loose-ends from posts recent or not so recent, with the help of various contributors, bit of an eclectic line-up, but that's very much the nature of the Blog! I'll do them in the order they've come it, most recent first.

ΑΘΗΝΑ; AϴHNAS; Aehone; African Bearers; African Natives; African Warrior Toy; Animal Flats; Aohna; Athena; Ceremonial Guards; Clown Figurine; Clown Figurines; Clowning Figure; Coca-Cola Premiums; Coke Premiums; Fanta Premiums; Flat Figures; Fontanini Clowns; Fontanini Dwarf; Greek Vintage Novelty; Greek Vintage Soldiers; Greek Warrior; Jungle Explorer; Jungle Safari; Macki The Hedgehog; Mecki The Hedgehog; Micky The Hedgehog; Mucki The Hedgehog; Small Scale World; smallscaleworld.blogspot.com;
Theo van der Weerden sent this last week as a follow-up to the previous week's post on ceremonials, four more of Athena's models of Greece's finest in their finery! The two on the right are the same as two we looked at the other day, but the two on the left are both colourways of another uniform type, and also show two of the other plug-in arms these figures come with, being the standard bearer and 'sword downwards' arms.

The sword might be meant to be held against the waist/thigh, but their definitely had their hands through the hilt, so it may be more significant? While - having handled many more of these than I have got - I know the flag-staff is very thin polystyrene, and you don't often find it in this condition . . . it's also the spear issued to Athena's ancient Greek warriors.

Ha-ha! A few weeks after I'd Blogged the weird composition hedgehog in Chris Smith's donation parcel, look what I found on a shelf in the legendary Peter Evans' abode, and which he kindly let me photograph - a whole family of them!

Peter did tell me what they were, but I immediately forgot and had to Google them . . . trying 'Belgium' and 'Holland TV Hedgehog' with little luck I broadened my reach and found this;

So that's them then! Mecki (and Macki, Micky amd Mucki) the hedgehog[s] . . . Brilliant!

These came in a while back, the Coke-Cola/Fanta premiums (sadly still no springbok) but with the remains of paint, heavily worn, they were clearly much-played with and I initially assumed they were home-painted, but given the un-Coke-marked ones have started to turn-up in other colours and more modern plastics, it's obvious the tools have had a good life, and I offer them here as a maybe factory-painted issue, maybe home-painted curiosity?

Around the same time and while I wasn't Blogging; Chris Smith had also found the hunter that goes with the Hong Kong African's he (Chris) had already helped with, back in the Spring.

Because I had already got the show-reports done (with my similar find), these got put to one side, but I shot the bases to show the smoothness and the translucence of the brown figures, where not enough pigment has been added to the neutral granules (cost cutting), rendering them 'smoky' in the thinner sections.

Finally Brian B sent the figure on the left ages ago and I didn't add it to the recent post on them, as that was plunder . . .  while the old feebleBay image on the right shows what might be the same set but which is I suspect a 5th generation copy (compare the dickey-bow) of Brian's 4th, against the 2nd/3rd generations we saw last time (larger hats), of Fontanini's originals. Although with both Peltro and Kinder (among others) also copying them, whose generation of copy is which generation, is a moot point!

Many-thanks to Brian, Chris, Peter and Theo for the input.
