US band Immortal Guardian are out with the album "Unite and Conquer", and progressive metal is the style explored on this production. Or to be more precise, this is a band that have mastered the art of combining progressive metal and power metal in just about an equal measure. Energetic surges into power metal landscapes is a recurring element throughout here, explored in longer sections as well as used as energetic impact moments. The progressive metal aesthetics are most commonly used by way of quirky and challenging instrument movements of a challenging and virtuous nature, but the band also makes good use of the more atmospheric laden aspects of the progressive metal tradition alongside occasional dips into more majestic builds and a little bit of theatrical flair. If done right this is a combination that works really well, and that is very much the case for this latest studio album by Immortal Guardian. Energy and virtuosity flavored with atmospheric laden tendencies is what we get here, and if you tend to enjoy bands that mix power metal and progressive metal in a controlled and tasteful manner then you should be the perfect audience for this production. The biggest reference point that I can give when describing the music of The Midgard Project is perhaps Symphony X and bands of their ilk. The Midgard Project are far from copycats or clones, because the similarities are not overwhelming, or exact. But it would be remiss of me to not declare that I do hear significant echoes of the Americans within some of the material, be it Block’s vocals, or the way in which the music itself features some great virtuosic guitar playing, powerhouse rhythms, and plenty of grandiose orchestration. I fully suspect that Michael Romeo is a big influence on Mr Midgard.

Description/Reviews:

Music that has evolved and perhaps slightly changed since their previous album; Master Device & Slave Machines (2017). One of the reasons for this change is the absence of one of the initial members, songwriter and guitar player Wouter van der Veen, who has left the band and was replaced by newcomer Kay Bouten. Kay's guitar playing is a bit more metal and alternative than the heavy progressive approach of his predecessor. The other change are the songs itself. In my opinion, the band has left the well paved paths of progressive rock and metal and found themselves on the outskirts of powerful metal. Armed Cloud seems to be more extreme than before.
