Hérold - Overtures and Symphonies - Hauschild
"There are vocations that cannot be denied. Every gesture, every step or - in the case of composers - every written measure speaks of them. There are composers who were born to write for the theatre and others who were born to write instrumental music. This does not mean, of course, that they are incapable of applying themselves to fields other then their favourite; the difference in quality, however, can generally be perceived. And there are the so-called geniuses, those who excels in all fileds (Handel and Mozart immediately come to mind); but they are few and far between. Louis Ferdinand Hérold (1791-1833) was born to write for theatre. This much is obvious not only from his biography - where he appears as one of the most successful early 19th century French opera composers - but also from comparing the two sparkling overtures to the operas Zampa and Le pré aux clercs with his two rather stiff Symphonies, the early date of composition of which cannot quite excuse their rigorously academic writing.(...)"
