Ak'chamel, The Giver Of Illness ‎– The Totemist

This new blogger interface is breaking my balls when I'm trying to upload pics. Three out of four times the pics won't be uploaded. Whatever. If any of you have any ideas how I can bypass this, or even better revert to the old interface, your advice will be deeply appreciated.

Mysterious duo of fourth-world cannibal witchdoctors plays guitar/percussion hymnal incantations of desert folk psychedelia. 2020 LP on Akuphone.

Merula - Sleep

Possibly the best release of 2020 so far, and one that fits the deathly future we are all awaiting this coming winter with the unforgiving onslaught of covid. This is a rendition of Tarquino Merula's religious anthem "Hor ch’e tempo di dormire." The first version is a tape recording of a soprano singing it with birds in the background, and the second one is an unnerving cover in English with a death-folk/dark ambient vibe. It's very depressing and I can't really listen to it throughout, but it's extremely highly recommended. 2020 tape on Men Scryfa.

Louise Landes Levi, Timo van Luijk, Bart De Paepe ‎– Kami

This is my first rip with the tiny suitcase turntable I had asked for help about. I somehow managed to reduce the noise/clipping so I would ask you to leave some feedback on the sound. Yes, it's definitely not superb, but I guess it's a little bit more than passable. What do you think? A big thanks to badgerstump, wankerd, and Samuel for their help and contact. This is another great collaboration between Louise Landes Levi, Bart De Paepe and Timo Van Luijk, this time moving a little bit away from sarangi-based psychedelic Indian classical music to more progressive and psychedelic rock territory, which is absolutely successful. 2019 lp on Bart De Paepe's Sloowax.

Tremolo Ghosts - A Cardboard Sunset

Another very interesting release by Wormhole World, who have just released Xqui's Capitulate, is the upcoming cd by Tremolo Ghosts, the solo project of Owen Chambers, who participates in the Liquid Library label, presented in an earlier issue of TQ. The basis for the music here is acoustic folky stuff, with Owen's very characteristic high-pitched voice, which somehow reminds me of Yes's Jon Anderson in a higher and warmer tone. However, in comparison with earlier releases such as Gibraltar or Clutter Flies there's a more psych mood, more diverse instrumentation with electric guitars, reverbs, and improvised guitar snippets, and there's even a noise interlude. I get a very maritime feel here, and a melancholy air but filled with hope and conviction. Another great early 2019 release that's gonna keep me good company for the year. Go to the bandcamp, and pre-order it, it's worth the money.

Tom Settle - Dried Plumes tape

Beautiful acoustic guitar experiments by Tom Settle a-la John Fahey, early David Gilmour with an ambient/drone edge very close to his associate Jon Collin, which means guaranteed quality. Must listen. 2010 tape on Winebox Press, re-pressed in 2016 by Early Music.

Prana Crafter - Prana Crafter cdr

Prana Crafter is the brainchild of William Sol, a virtuoso guitarist from Seattle, playing psychedelic folk. The guy is a guitar mastermind, and he also overdubs percussions and keyboards to create beautiful melodies with a warm tone, over which he plays perfect solos with electric and acoustic guitars; his voice is quite similar to Neil Young's, an influence that is also evident in the music, along with Ummagumma-to-Meddle Pink Floyd, the quiet/most psychedelic moments of The Doors and even early David Bowie ("Cells In Orbit" sounds like a mix between "Space Oddity" and the electric part of "Stairway to Heaven"), while his guitar playing sounds to me quite close to the solo material of John Frusciante. Throw in a good measure of "Planet Caravan" and you're good to go. Great music for wandering in the forests. 2014 cdr on Reverb Worship.

His most recent release, the tape Bodhi Cheetah's Choice on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond, is also a must listen, and go here to check it out.

Muuttuvat Kasvot ‎– Muuttuvat Kasvot cdr

Muuttuvat Kasvot is a project of Finnish guy Jari Koho, who also runs several other groups. This is psychedelic drone folk, similar to the quieter parts of Silvester Anfang/Bart De Paepe/Funeral Folk releases, with heavy doses of Amon Duul and Popol Vuh worship, and with a hint of 1970's Ccanterbury jazz. 2007 cdr on Ikuisuus.

James Pike - On Your Own Day You Are Believed tape

Achingly and desperately beautiful lo-fi psychedelic folk dirge rock by this Maine singer/songwriter about whom I cannot find any other info or releases. Based on electric keyboards, and organ, while some tracks feature a full band with a slightly dark country sound straight from the '60s, this sounds like a late-night drunken jump from the bridge. Definitely not a party maker. 2017 tape on Sloow Tapes.

Jon Collin - Early Music tape

One of the best guitar players around at the moment, Jon Collin creates a link between psychedelic/acid folk and ambient music, improvising with every possible sound his acoustic guitar can create as well as playing melodies evoking images of lying under a starry sky in the desert, being something of a crossing between Derek Bailey, the ambient moments of Pat Metheny and David Gilmour in his acoustic/folky Ummagumma/Atom Heart Mother/ Meddle days. 2016 tape on Early Music.
