VYRYV x Morbid Debasement - Split

VYRYV - Split album cover

VYRYV is Lee Stokoe (Culver, etc, regular readers you know my worship) playing Posh Isolation-style synth ambient; Morbid Debasement plays more dark-ambient-ish with organ. Cool stuff. 2019 2X3" cdr.

Nivhek - After its own death / Walking in a spiral towards the house

Nivhek is a new alternate moniker for the work of Liz Harris/Grouper. After last year's awesome Grid Of Points, which accompanied me during my mother's short hospitalization and death, this new four-part recording features also Michael Morley (The Dead C/Gate), has an equally depressive/ghostly mood. Piano is to be found in minimum quantities here, as the main instrument is a lonely vibrating synth, along with some intense deep bass drones, and of course Liz's evasive vocals. There's a somewhat ethereal quality reminding me of Dead Can Dance's Within The Realm of a Dying Sun. As I said it's a very depressive record; two days ago I listened to it on repeat for a few hours while reading Teodor Adorno's Lectures on Negative Dialectics (a very difficult read in itself) and having a cold due to having open windows during a somewhat cold day, and I felt very miserable to the point of feeling my heart beating weakly. I don't want to dissuade you from listening to it; it's another high peak for Grouper, it's just that it can really destroy a good mood. 2019 LP on Yellow Electric; I chose not to separate the tracks, as they continue seamlessly and it would ruin the unity.

Maurizio Bianchi ‎– Colori cd

A significant release in MB's oeuvre in a twofold way; first, it was his return cd after his mid-80s retirement to devote himself to religion. Second, the music contained is in stark contrast with the abrasive industrial noise of his early period, and with his later ominous, dark industrial ambient drone that he still puts out today. This is soothing synthy ambient - with a very very slight new age feel (don't be put off by that, only a wee bit) - that could have been the soundtrack for some documentary on underwater life or the study of the human brain or whatever. There's an element of naivete with regard to the simplistic piano chords/melodies created by MB, but if you want something to accompany you in a non-troubling way while doing the housework, it's cool. 1998 cd on EEs't Records.

Charles Barabé / Howl Of The Lacerated / Andrew Paine / Toucan Lifecycle ‎– 4-way split tape

4-way split tape featuring excellent hypnagogic psychedelic ambient by Charles Barabé (who I'll definitely explore more), horror industrial in the vein of early Throbbing Gristle focused on howling guitar noises and creepy synths by Howl Of The Lacerated (side project of Jamie Azzopardi, boss of the label putting this out), fizzy space psychedelic electronics by Andrew Paine (reminding a little bit of Ashtray Navigations in a live environment, if you've ever seen them in the act), and blissful psychedelic synthetic ambient by Toucan Lifestyle. Nice! 2017 tape on Shack In The Barley Productions.

Crochet - The Battle cdr

If you liked the Bandril posts, Crochet is the solo project of Rob Galpin, one half of Bandril. Here he continues the fuzzed out synth contamination of ears, going to noisier and denser territories than Bandril that are also much darker. Weird toxic psychedelic noise is the name of the game, with influences from early Maurizio Bianchi, but that also hint at Lee Stokoe's later industrial synth noise project Vampyres, as well as Depletion, the solo vehicle of Martyn Reid, second member of Vampyres. 2010 self-released cdr.

Bandril ‎– Bandril Meets Your Mother cdr

Calming synth psychedelic melancholy; it might have even been something from Troum or Coil's late 1990s output. Surely you wouldn't expect that from black drone sorcerer Stokoe. Cdr on Gloop CDR!

Bandril ‎– Evening Grey Blades tape

Improvisations on fuzzed-out synth (sounding like a Mike Ratledge's organ on very damaged drugs) degenerate into harsh noise. 2010 tape on Runify Gal.

øjeRum - Selv I Drømme Lyser Den Første Sne

Something is rotten in the kingdom of Denmark. So many artists emerge from there, wielding their synths and trying to put us in a state of complete depression. As if (old) Croatian Amor and labels Posh Isolation and Janushoved weren't enough, here comes øjeRum creeping under our skin with a twenty-minute completely addictive track of looped organ melancholy, painting a landscape of complete desolation. What I see is only pure white; everything has died and I just want to crawl in a corner, curl up and fall asleep, but the white is piercing my closed eyelids. Is this true or am I seeing things in the comatose state I am? I totally find this looped melody to be the soundtrack to a person being in coma. I was listening to this two hours ago while helping my baby child burp from his meal, and he fell asleep to it. Should I be worrying about him? On the flipside, the same melody receives a dramatic violin interpretation by Aaron Martin, making things even more apocalyptic and suicidal. 2018 LP on Midira Records.

N. / Depletion ‎– Today I Feel Drained cdr

Italian N. sets off very interestingly with soulless synth noise akin to Maurizio Bianchi and Atrax Morgue. It sounds very damaged and nihilistic, inducing you to just stare at the ceiling. The great Depletion of Martyn Reid (Vampyres) continues with three amazing tracks of heavy synth noise of similar influences, for people who want to commit suicide by swallowing a bucket of wet concrete. 2017 cdr on BeTon.

Emaciator - Possessive tape

Emaciator proves that sleep can be a horrible experience. Hypnotic, dark and scuzzy synth imdustrial noise in the vein of early Maurizio Bianchi that is guaranteed to put you to sleep and then terrify you. 2006 tape on Hanson.

Depletion ‎– Electrónica Nerviosa cdr

Claustrophobic, utterly grey and urban modular synth industrial noise by Martyn Reid, who also plays with Lee Stokoe in Vampyres. Like early Maurizio Bianchi with better sound and bleake. 2016 cdr on Shadown Of Venom.

Maurizio Bianchi - Technology 1 & 2

A compilation of two early (1981) tapes by Maurizio Bianchi, featuring primitive soulless and toxic synth attack. The first two tracks ("Technology 1) were also featured in the vinyl box released by Vinyl On Demand, which was a few weeks ago posted by the fine Rehashed Blog, but the second "Technology" was omitted. Fortunately for us, At War With False Noise salvaged it and released it in 2009 in cd form.

Picasso Trigger - The End Of the Whole Mess tape

Some really creepy ringing industrial synth going on on the first track similar to Hive Mind, while the second track is underwater sci-fi delay synth fizz and tape-chewing. Really good. 2012 tape on Sound Holes.

Pjorn(o)72

Yet another comp by the great label Pjorn 72, featuring the vastness of Culver's drones, psychedelic electronic house by Legion (totally unlike the track they made on Doing the Right Thing Takes the Emptiness Away comp), a really calming and uplifting acoustic guitar track by Fordell Research Unit, abstract electronics by Twocsinak, two synth gems by Midwich, funny percussive Casio synthy music by Button One, an oscillating stretched drone by Wounded Knee, heavy bass drone by Subvs.Loop, screechy rhythms by Tartan Trolley, office muzak by The Maniac Upstairs (who is getting his rifle to kill his colleagues at the office downstairs), music for kids science documentaries on a sequencer by Pop.1280, glitch by O'er The Moon, and drone pop by Milklemonadechocolate. 2006 cdr on Pjorn 72.

Raising Holy Sparks - Old Times & End Times tape (Sloow Tapes)

Another great tape by Sloow Tapes, this one is an Irish project headed by multi-instrumentalist David Collohan, and features among others Alison O'Donnell of the legendary 1960s-1970s folk band Mellow Candle. The tape presents predominantly dreamy psychedelic material close to floating kosmische music, mainly Popol Vuh, as well as modern-day masters like Natural Slow Buildings and Eternal Tapestry, as well as mournful acoustic folk numbers played on the guitar and accordion. Truly heartbreaking music for the cold sunrises of winter.
