Carpanian Regiment Schweiger

In January, the Margraviate of Carpania added a new infantry regiment to its army with the completion of the outfitting of the Infantry Regiment Schweiger.  This 24-figure regiment is patterned after the Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 22, Prinz Moritz Anhalt-Dessau and is composed of 28mm Sash and Saber Prussian figures.

The regiment can be used for either the "Batailles de l'Ancien Regime" rules or the "Der Alte Fritz Seven Years War" rules.

Although I have plenty more SYW Imagi-nations troops to paint, these may be the last for a while as I have other, more pressing painting requirements - 28mm Britannian and Gallian units for the "Gallian and Indian War" (AKA French and Indian), a 15mm Union brigade for the ACW, 28mm infantry sections for early WW2 British and Germans, and a 28mm improvised Malcolm-Campbell armored car for the Very British Civil War.

Royal Ecossais Second Wave

And on the last day of the year 2018, I'm posting the completion of the 2nd wave of the Gallian Regiment Royal Ecossais.  These figures have been waiting for four years to be completely outfitted.

These are from Old Glory's Jacobite range.  The flag they are carrying is the colonel's "white" flag blazoned with the Scottish thistle and French fleur de lis.  They join their compatriots of the "First Wave."  There will be a "Third Wave" next year as I outfit the grenadier company and the picquet company.

The complete regiment will see their first action on Saturday, January 19, 2019, as part of the Gallian contingent to the Imperial Armeeabteilung Kreis Obere-Sachsen.

Carpanian Regiment Clausthaler

I just added a new battalion to my Seven Years War imagi-nations forces, the Carpanian Regiment Clausthaler, named after a German beer.  It is patterned after the real-world Prussian Regiment Braunschweig-Bevern (#7).  The only distinctive change I made was to substitute a more redder "rose" for the pink rose listed on the Kronoskaf web site.

The figures are 28mm Old Glory SYW Prussian infantry and the flags are from the Warflag web site.  The battalion, like all my SYW imagi-nations forces, is organized for Bill Protz's "Batailles de l'Ancien Regime" (BAR) rule set.

Next month I hope to add another two companies to the Gallian (read French) Regiment Royal Ecossais.

Royal Ecossais Regiment

Finally after almost four years, I've finally finished the first two 12-figure "companies" of the Royal Ecossais Regiment ( link ).  And they look just as good as I hoped they would!

They are the Old Glory Jacobite range figures with everyone wearing a bonnet.  The flag of this "battalion" is the ordnance color with its dark blue field adorned by the thistle and fleur de lis.

As I stated in my 2015 post, they are organized in 12-figure companies for Bill Protz's "Batailles de l'Ancien Regime" (BAR) rules.

This "battalion" will join my Gallian army detachment that is part of the Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere Sachsen (Imperial Army Detachment Upper Saxony).

I still have another two-company "battalion" plus the grenadier and piquet companies to paint.  Gives me something to do and keeps me off the streets.

Amusette for Staffeldunkel Jagers

The Jager Corps Staffeldunkel of the Margraviate of Carpania has added some additional firepower - an amusette!  Manned by two volunteers from the corps, the amusette should prove useful to the corps as it acts as part of either the advanced guard or the rear guard for the Carpanian field force.

The amusette is a Fife and Drum Miniatures piece (# AE-006).  I obtained it from Der Alte Fritz some time ago and have just gotten around to painting it.  The crew are in the green uniform of the Staffeldunkel jagers with Britannian light dragoon helmets procured by the major so the team can be more distinctive.

Spring Campaigning is Beginning in Central Europa

The campaign season is upon us.  The snows in the Thuringian Forest have melted and the grass is lush in the valleys and dales.  Commissary agents for the various Electoral and Imperium states as well as from Germania, Britannia, and Gallia have been scouring the countryside for food stuffs and animal fodder.  The bakeries and cannon foundries are working overtime.  Surely war is coming once again to Europa.

Having heard rumblings of Imperial activity in the Saxon lands near our neighbor and ally the Kingdom of Hesse-Seewald, the Markgraf has directed his small army to march southeast through Coburg to threaten the Imperial base at Bayreuth.  General der Infanterie Baron Rolfe von Stuppe, commander of the Carpanian army, is mustering his regiments, aided by a Britannian infantry regiment and heavy dragoon squadron as well as several guns.  Baron von Stuppe is using the appellation Electorische Armee Thuringen (Electoral Army in Thuringia) for his small force since Carpania supports the Electoral forces headed by King Friedrich II of Germania.

At the Imperial base at Bayreuth, the Reichsarmeeabteilung Obere-Sachsen (Army Detachment Upper Saxony) has been marshalling its forces under the command of Feldmarshall-Leutnant Freiherr Bernard von Alderheim.  It consists of forces from Courland, Sachsen-Wachsenstein, and Gallia.  Von Alderheim has deployed his pulk (regiment) of Courland Cossacks out to the northwest of Bayreuth to keep an eye out for the Carpanians, whom he is sure will march to the support of the Hesse-Seewalders.

Charles Town Grenadiers

As promised earlier, here are the "unknown manufacturer's" Queen's Rangers grenadier figures. I will be using them in my imaginary 1760s-ish campaigning in the southeastern portion of North America, what I am calling El Capitania General de la Florida (with thanks to Jean-Louis of the Persipality of Monte-Cristo).


These four figures will be "brigaded" with nine Colonial rangers and seven Brittanian light infantry to form a Corps of Scouts for the Brittanian expeditions into Florida.


Although I have these figures glued to 3/4" (~20mm) fender washers, I think that I will need a slightly larger size, probably 1" (~25mm) washers since their bases are so large.

With one exception, all units painted in June have been pictured here in earlier posts.

Plus several hills and other terrain features used in the Assault on Fort Khalaam game at Bayou Wars. And I still have to do the report on that battle - probably on Sunday or Monday.

July 2008 Painting (Part 1)

My July 2008 painting wasn't what I hoped it would be. I did paint a small group of 9 civilians for background color in my SYW imagi-nation world. A company of 15 jagers joined the Carpanian army. A small battalion of 30 pandurs joined the Courland army. This makes 54 "Olly" painting points. But I don't have pictures taken yet.

About half of my hobby time was taken up with adding terrain effects to my mounted officers and artillery. I added terrain effects (building up bases and adding flock) to 5 mounted officers (2 Carpanian and 3 Courland), 25 Carpanian gunners and 7 guns, and 11 Courland gunners and 6 guns. Again, pictures will be posted later.

I also rebased the Warsteiner Freikorps onto individual figure bases so that they can be used in conjunction with the jagers as opponents in "der kleiner krieg" against the pandurs.

I think that for the future, I will post a brief description and a picture as I get a unit finished, rather than waiting until the end of the month. We'll see how that goes.

My SYW imagi-nation armies continue to slowly grow as I prepare for attendance at the "big battalions" SYW game at MilleniumCon in Austin, Texas in November. As of the end of July:

Carpania (an ally of Germania [Prussia]) has two 48-figure infantry battalions, one 12-figure grenadier company, one 12-figure freikorps company, one 15-figure jager company, two position guns with crews, and five battalion guns with crews.

Courland (an ally of the Imperium [Austria]) has one 48-figure grenadier battalion, one 48-figure infantry battalion, one 30-figure pandur battalion, one 12-figure dragoon squadron, two 8-figure cossack squadrons, two position guns with crews, and four battalion guns without crews (yet).

August will be devoted to painting Carpanian and Courland cavalry and putting terrain effects on the infantry unit bases.

Busy, busy, busy!

May 2008 Painting - Finally!

Finally I get my pictures taken and posted of the troops I have added during May 2008 - a total of some 91 points (three guns and 88 foot figures). These are some of them:

The Carpanian Army added the Paulaner Fusilier Battalion, 24 strong, using Crusader figures. It will be paired with the von Stuppe Fusiliers to create a 48-figure "big battalion" for BAR games.



The Carpanians also added two guns to its arsenal, both products of the Eisenmuhlen Cannon Foundry. The first is a 12-lbr (an old Miniature Figurines gun) manned by Crusader gunners.

The second piece of artillery is a 10-lb howitzer (also Miniature Figurines), this time manned by Old Glory gunners.

And the Duchy of Courland has also been busy, uniforming the Duke's namesake Pavlovski Grenadiers. This 24-figure battalion will be paired with the Severinski Grenadiers to make a 48-figure "big battalion" for BAR games.

Among the extra and "one-of" figures I painted in May is young Alaistair Campbell, nephew of the Carpanian mercenary Scottish general, Seamus Campbell. Young Alaistair will accompany the Margarve's nephew, Siegfried Hapnich, across the water to fight with the Britannians against the Jacobite usurpers. Alaistair is a Front Rank figure and is my first real attempt at painting a Scottish tartan on a 28mm figure. The tartan is real simple, bright green base and bright blue stripes, but it looks fairly realistic from wargaming distances. I have Seamus and his 24-figure battalion still to do.

And finally, to complete my Colonial forces for the big George Carr Memorial Colonial game that we are running at Bayou Wars in New Orleans on June 21 (see http://www.bayouwars.org/ ), I painted a 20-figure British unit. During Bayou Wars it will be the 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot, joining its sister battalion, the 1st, in the Imperial expedition to chastize the Zulu. But there will be over 1,000 Zulu figures (over 40,000 warriors) versus the slightly less than 400 Imperial troops (about 16,000 soldiers of the Queen). A battle report will follow.

June's painting will not be as impressive as I have been working on magnetic movement stands for that horde of Zulus and some terrain for the game. I'll get back to my imagi-European (SYW) figures next month, beginning with a squadron of Carpanian dragoons.
