March Painting Results

March was a good month for painting as I churned out three Arab units for my upcoming convention game in June:

11 Arab cavalry (22 Olley points)
40 Arab infantry (40 Olley points)

for a total of 62 Olley points.  You may see pictures of these three units by looking at the previous posts for March.  For the first quarter I've painted 187 Olley points or about 2 infantry or 1 cavalry figure per day, on average.

Although not counted since the entire units wasn't finished until today, I also painted the 12 horses for the last of the Arab units for my convention game.  I still have to prepare the "fortified" camp at Wadi Zoum-Zoum and paint some additional palm trees and another naval gun.

I will have a playtest of the game on Saturday, April 17.  You can see the first Wadi Zoum-Zoum game at our club's website:

http://www.angelfire.com/games3/jacksongamer/grn_nile2.htm.

I'll be using the same terrain boards and buildings but probably a different looking camp has it has had a chance be developed over the years since the last action there.  A report and pictures are to come.

Rangers and Light Infantry

After finally getting my first war band of Woodland Indians painted, I started on some opponents for them. First up were 9 Redoubt French & Indian War rangers.

I painted them wearing the black with blue facings uniform popular with some of the ranger units during the early part of the war. Although Redoubt sculpted them to be Roger's Rangers, these will just be a generic group until I can decide on a name for them.

Although they look very shiny in the pictures, they do have a matte varnish on them that gives them a warm satiny look. The Redoubt poses were very easy to piant.

They should be excellent opponents for the Gallian allied Indians and the Gallian colonial militia and Compagnes Franches de la Marine that I have.

The rangers will be teamed up with a small group of Foundry British light infantry. Now the actual figures are from Foundry's American Revolution line, but in my imagi-nation New World, they will be so uniformed just a little earlier than in the real-world.

These seven stalwart "Light Bobs" are painted as the light infantry of the 5th Foot, early in the conflict before they became corrupted by the radical ideas of those 'Murican bandits.

As with the Redoubt figures, these were very easy to paint, with the details being clearly defined and readily accessible to a paint brush.

I'm also just about finished with the last contingent of this little command, a squad of 4 'Murican loyalist grenadiers (see previous post for a picture of one of the figures primed). I'm basing their uniform on that of the American Revolution Queen's Rangers. Their picture will be posted shotrly.

October Painting

I realize that I have been lazy in making additional posts after the two big battles we had in late September and early October. They must have taken more away from my "hobby enthusiasm" than I suspected.

After the second of the big battles, I only painted an additional 12 figures - the third infantry company for the Eisenmuhlen Regiment, using the last of the delightful RSM-95 British infantry I had. So now that regiment has a strength of 36 figures. Eventually I will get another 12 figures to increase it to 48.

I also prepared and primed a batch of 24 American Eastern Woodland Indians for my French & Indian War project and actually got their flesh and mocassins painted. But that's as far as I went. They are still sitting on my painting table. Maybe I can get more done on them this week, especially as I have Wednesday off work for Veterans Day. And I prepared and primed over two dozen rangers and light infantry and another six Indians for future painting.

More later. Jim

September 2009 Painting

Since I was preparing for two "big battalion" games this month (one on September 19 and the other on October 3), I didn't get much painting done - just 10 "Olley" points. But I did construct two rather large paper buildings, including a walled cemetery and graves for one.

This figure is a mounted officer from the (sadly) out-of-production Spanish range from the London Warroom. He is a very nice casting, waving his hat to encourage the troops, and sits very well on his horse. For my two games, he played a role as commander of one of the Reichsarmee brigades in the Imperium army.

During September, I painted 8 of the 24 figures in the unit of Hessian grenadiers. The other 16 have been painted for a number of years. The 8 new figures are all in the front rank and are Miniature Figurines SYW figures. The rest of the unit are Miniature Figurines (the advancing poses) and an unknown (to me) manufacturer (the march attack poses). This battalion is actually part of my American Revolution army but was drafted to play the role of a converged Reichsarmee grenadier battalion.

Later edit: According to DC, in his comment, the march attack figures are from Garrison Miniatures.

You've seen this church before as I posted an "under construction" entry earlier in September and it was featured in The Affair at Alt Kirchendorf, the first "big battalion" game I ran on Saturday, September 19 (see earlier posts for the 3-part battle report). Please see The Old Church posting for more details.

Here it is "in action" with its cemetery garrisoned by a company of Carpanian grenadiers.

The other paper building was the cannon foundry at Eisenmuhlen (which means iron mills in German). This building is actually in two parts which can be used together or separately. As was the church, the paper walls were glued to a foam core sub structure. The roof on the one-story part is removable. The cannon are a pair from RAFM.

And here is a shot of it on the battlefield of The Affair at Eisenmuhlen, which was the "big battalion" game I ran on Saturday, October 3. There will be more pictures of it in the battle report, which is still to be posted.

For October, I've already started on a third company for the Regiment Eisenmuhlen (RSM95 British infantry). I also will, finally, begin work on my 28mm French and Indian War figures and hopefully begin some work on the Regiment Royal Eccossais, using Old Glory figures.

August Painting Totals

My August painting has been completely devoted to getting the final troops ready for my "big battalion" game to introduce my group to Bill Protz's Batailles de l'Ancien Regime rules (scheduled for Saturday, September 19). With one exception, all of the troops I painted are part of my American Revolution forces who were drafted into the service of the Elector or the Imperium. All units but the last have already been pictured in earlier posts. The last unit will go up this weekend.

6 light dragoons (12 points)
6 mounted jagers (12 points)
2 light infantry officers (2 points)
1 mounted light dragoon officer (2 points)
12 Loyalist light dragoons (24 points)
12 Spanish infantry (12 points)

Total of 64 "Olley" points.

June Painting Results

With one exception, all units painted in June have been pictured here in earlier posts.

60 Victorian native infantry (3 x 20-figure units)
12 Victorian native cavalry (1 units)
1 French & Indian War ranger and his dog
1 mounted SYW officer, an Imperial to be used as the overall field commander for the Imperial Reichsarmee forces provided by the Duchies of Courland and Sachsen-Wachsenstein

Total: 88 Olley points

Plus several hills and other terrain features used in the Assault on Fort Khalaam game at Bayou Wars. And I still have to do the report on that battle - probably on Sunday or Monday.

July 2008 Painting (Part 1)

My July 2008 painting wasn't what I hoped it would be. I did paint a small group of 9 civilians for background color in my SYW imagi-nation world. A company of 15 jagers joined the Carpanian army. A small battalion of 30 pandurs joined the Courland army. This makes 54 "Olly" painting points. But I don't have pictures taken yet.

About half of my hobby time was taken up with adding terrain effects to my mounted officers and artillery. I added terrain effects (building up bases and adding flock) to 5 mounted officers (2 Carpanian and 3 Courland), 25 Carpanian gunners and 7 guns, and 11 Courland gunners and 6 guns. Again, pictures will be posted later.

I also rebased the Warsteiner Freikorps onto individual figure bases so that they can be used in conjunction with the jagers as opponents in "der kleiner krieg" against the pandurs.

I think that for the future, I will post a brief description and a picture as I get a unit finished, rather than waiting until the end of the month. We'll see how that goes.

My SYW imagi-nation armies continue to slowly grow as I prepare for attendance at the "big battalions" SYW game at MilleniumCon in Austin, Texas in November. As of the end of July:

Carpania (an ally of Germania [Prussia]) has two 48-figure infantry battalions, one 12-figure grenadier company, one 12-figure freikorps company, one 15-figure jager company, two position guns with crews, and five battalion guns with crews.

Courland (an ally of the Imperium [Austria]) has one 48-figure grenadier battalion, one 48-figure infantry battalion, one 30-figure pandur battalion, one 12-figure dragoon squadron, two 8-figure cossack squadrons, two position guns with crews, and four battalion guns without crews (yet).

August will be devoted to painting Carpanian and Courland cavalry and putting terrain effects on the infantry unit bases.

Busy, busy, busy!

Figures Painted in January 2008

For 2008, I made a decision to keep track of the figures I paint. So here's what I did in January (all 25mm Medievals). The colored numbers designate the units and their morale class, in this case green for yeomen and yellow for peasants. We use a modified version of the old "Rules by Ral" which has three morale classes - blue for knights (mounted or foot), green for yeoman (mounted or foot), and yellow for peasants (foot only). You can see a copy on our group's web site (link below) by clicking on the Rules button and scrolling down.

12 axemen:

24 archers

24 pikemen
12 peasants
All these figures were primed with gray artist's gesso, painted with acrylic craft paints, sealed with full-strength Future floor wax, brush dipped with Ace brand Walnut wood stain, and varnished with Delta Ceramcoat matte indoor varnish. They are mounted on 3/4" fender washers and then grouped in sixes on a magnetized movement base. All these units were used in a medieval game we had today with our local wargames group
( www.angelfire.com/games3/jacksongamer ).

I also continued work on 26 25mm SYW Prussians and some assorted other figures, which will be finished in February.
