ABC- ARCHED ARCHIVES

Today we look through the Arch window

ABC - Wednesday
Brought to you by the letter A

The beach trip is just not going as planned. Rain, rain and more rain. We even have a very light dusting of snow atop the mountain. Not enough for a fabulous image for the blog though. So back to the beach and this week's letter which is A. I give you Arched Archives. No really difficult to work out why is it. Just in case it it. Those are "arches" and this is an "archive" image

I have  shown you this place before as a black and white and as a colour version showing more of the pathway and less of the beach. Told you before this is a hidden gem. You have too walk a way along the beach to get here(the left arch leads to Ramsey) but it's really worth it. You can wade or jump the stream and head towards Maughold(right arch)well you could if it was safe. Remember tides come in as well as go out. Behind me leads the path up to one of the little glens we have here leading out of Ramsey and on the road to Douglas. There is a pretty picnic area up there and as I have said before a lovely place for the photographer. Very low light though so not forgiving for a snapshot. Rabbits have been known to do whatever rabbits do here, but reports of the phantom escaped wallaby of Ramsey are false! Or are they?

So that's it round 4, week 1. To join see the lady with letters Mrs Nesbitt and others too. The facebook experiment continues see you there. Click the logo. Just for fun.

Mrsnesbitt's place: ABC Wednesday..Round 4! Did you spot one or two TV programme refs. today?

Q - QUAINT QUEENS PROMENADE

Queens Promenade

Q is for quaint. Q is for Queens Promenade. I stood to take this image along Queens Promdenade, next to Queens Pier looking onto the beach below. Why it isn't called Queens Beach I don't know or oerhaps it is, anyone know? The scene seemed very quaint with the locals bathing on one of the better days in Ramsey. To add to the "times gone by" feel I desaturated the colour and ran a slight, almost negligent sepia wash through the image.

Ramsey isn't known for having the lovely beaches, that say Port St Mary, and Peel have( there are more, but just name checked two), but this side of the pier, when the tide is out does have a lovely stretch of beach. It does have harsh pebble underfoot, but not enough to hamper a walk out. This is where I pootle along the beach to photograph underneath the arches or cross the small stream. In the distance, the stretch of land on the horizon, is Maughold(pronounced Mackled) a small village named after St Machaoi.   A certain actor called Johnny Depp stayed there when he filmed the Libertine.

Ramsey and Maughold actually come under the same Parish so one day I 'll catch the very infrequent bus up there and photograph some very quaint, quirky, quintessential Manx History of crosses, churches, stones , St Machaoi etc. Of course I could walk round the bay when the tides out, but run the risk of getting stuck between a rock and a hard place. No I'll risk the bus, even though I may end up staying the night in the spooky graveyard.

UNDERNEATH THE RAMSEY ARCHES

This little archway is situated on the stretch of beach between the towns of Ramsey and Maughold. If you continue the walk towards the right side of the image, tide out you can walk round the sweeping bay, over rock pools to Maughold Beach.

It can only be accessed when the tide is out, so visitors to the town could miss this, a lot of locals do, but it's worth the short walk out. If you follow the stream inland it leads back to the main road leading down into Ramsey Town Centre. No groovy signs to point the way here though like yesterdays post! Along the way you'll pass an array of wild birds, frogs, toads and if you're lucky the odd rabbit. So far I have not been lucky enough to snap a rabbit, well not here anyway. It's perfect for photographers, just wait a while and wildlife will come to you and hang around long enough for you to start snapping.

Just after I shot this image the tide ebbed it's way in and I had to walk briskly to get to Ramsey Pier. I think it was worth crossing the stream and getting wet boots to shoot though. Speaking of my funky blue suede walking boots they are poorly and need of repair. They are my old faithfuls, really funky and with my skinny black jeans and do make me look like a fly stuck in ointment. Yeah, but I can walk through anything in them. Even the ensuing tide.

By the way I would like to say how clever I was to snap the dog owner in one arch and the dog in another but not so. Serendipity again, they just happened by that way as I snapped. No on second thoughts, I am such a photographic genius I spotted them and composed the juxtaposed dog and walker in each dividing frame. Honest!

RAMSEY TO MAUGHOLD

At last some someshine! While the rest of Britain has a snowy April we have had a wonderful day of mild sun. Not hot, still with a gentle breeze, but the best day we have had so far this year. At least the sunbathers thought so.

Ramsey isn't known for having the lovely beaches, that Port Erin, and Peel have( there are more, but just namechecked two), but this side of the pier, when the tides out does have a lovely stretch of beach. In the distance is Maughold(pronounced Mak old) a small village named after St Machaoi. Maughold Point, is the most easterly on the island, and the closest point to England.

A lovely place to visit, steeped in history, the Manx crosses, the IOOOAD church, the waterfall, and beacuse a certain actor called Johnny Depp stayed the when he filmed the Libertine.
