Au revoir - Skywatch

Beyond the sea

Skywatch

Au revoir for a week or so my little Bloggers. This time next week I will be in France not lost in France, though I would like to be. Yes finally off to the South of France, St Cyprien and Perpignan for a week. Never been to this particular part so anyone been this way shout out. Simply can't wait now 'til Sunday. So next week I will hopefully have some scheduled posts appear but I won't be around to link in to anything. You'll have to check out the blog for me instead and amuse me with your comments and questions. While you do that I will have travelled beyond the sea, over to England, the strip of land you see on the horizon and under the low cloud and then onto France. I don't expect to see this lilac haze sky reflected on the water we get here for another week or so. Instead I'll be swapping it for azures, aquas, a pea greens and of course a darned sight warmer that the somewhat bracing chilly water we have here. Don't be fooled by the lapping silky smooth gently rippling tide rolling in. It's freezing. As you can see too the scene was disturbed by the onset of rain, those little dots in the centre of the image. That of course is when the Nikon goes back in the case. Of course we do not expect any rain in France. The Nikon will be happy.

Off to do some chores before we go. Of course I may not actually come back. Anyone want to offer me a job out there absolutely fine my me, and of course Gary the artist click here too. Artists and photographers like us need live and work in France. Simply the best. I digress. This is about skies, and to see more of those around the world click here.

B is for - boats bobbing along on the beautiful briony sea

Not a toy boat, just cute

It's all the fun of the letter B for abc I'm not knocking myself out to be find another bountiful image, when I simply have to show you one of the very things I am surrounded by here. Blue, blue water and of course and bouncing buoyant boats bobbing along. Actually it wasn't so much bobbing than static due to the fact it was tightly moored. The temptation of course to cut the boats fixings, jump aboard and sail away were overcome by the sensible side. Pity. Such a cute little boat, a sunny day and an island coastline to discover. Not so much anchors aweigh for life on the ocean wave as not today I'm got some work to do. It'll keep.

Are you tempted to set sail in maybe something a little bigger or waters of a different kind? Then dive into the sea of letters of and see how others interpreted the sea and land this week here. I know you think I must have taken off on the boat with the short post, but sadly no just doing stuff as you do and moored to the laptop.

Free again

Free to do as I please

"Where is our blogger" refers to the post below. One of our Bloggers stopped blogging. This was of great concern to the community at the CDP. He is the Tehran Daily Blogger, A of Iran. You see why we were concerned. Our worst fears were confirmed, he had been arrested and detained. We hosted a special day called yesterday. Green images and similar text Last night we had the news confirmed A, had been released, he was free again.

I took this image last week on the beach. Mooragh Promenade just behind me. I sat for about an hour, contemplating how much the light and sea looked just like my favourite place the Cote d'Azur and wishing I was there in the South of France. I laughed at the little dog quicker than it's owner, spotting me. I smiled as the mother and excited child found their perfect spot. It was a glorious day and I was free to do as I please. A blogger in Tehran was not so lucky that day. He did not revel in the sunshine, enjoy a peaceful city, he was not free to do as he pleased. Today we are both free, but I will still have a quiet town, a beautiful beach, the sunshine, and freedom. A in Tehran will have a very different world to mine, his fight goes on but at least today he is free.

Thank you for reading this.

ABC- ARCHED ARCHIVES

Today we look through the Arch window

ABC - Wednesday
Brought to you by the letter A

The beach trip is just not going as planned. Rain, rain and more rain. We even have a very light dusting of snow atop the mountain. Not enough for a fabulous image for the blog though. So back to the beach and this week's letter which is A. I give you Arched Archives. No really difficult to work out why is it. Just in case it it. Those are "arches" and this is an "archive" image

I have  shown you this place before as a black and white and as a colour version showing more of the pathway and less of the beach. Told you before this is a hidden gem. You have too walk a way along the beach to get here(the left arch leads to Ramsey) but it's really worth it. You can wade or jump the stream and head towards Maughold(right arch)well you could if it was safe. Remember tides come in as well as go out. Behind me leads the path up to one of the little glens we have here leading out of Ramsey and on the road to Douglas. There is a pretty picnic area up there and as I have said before a lovely place for the photographer. Very low light though so not forgiving for a snapshot. Rabbits have been known to do whatever rabbits do here, but reports of the phantom escaped wallaby of Ramsey are false! Or are they?

So that's it round 4, week 1. To join see the lady with letters Mrs Nesbitt and others too. The facebook experiment continues see you there. Click the logo. Just for fun.

Mrsnesbitt's place: ABC Wednesday..Round 4! Did you spot one or two TV programme refs. today?

RAMSEY ON THE ROCKS

On a clear day(not today then)
http://dailyphotoisleofman.blogspot.com/

What did I say I was going to treat you to this week? A series of images on and around the beach.
What has the weather been like today horrendous.
Rain all day long. So no this image was no taken today but earlier in the week. Typical isn't it. Remind me not to suggest
a beach photography shoot in January ever again. Of course the post is also late for me. You guessed it. Friday is pub night.
Babooshka had an appointment to keep with Mr Jack Daniels and his close personal friend coke cola.

If You had seen the crashing waves images on Ramsey Daily Photo then you will possibly recognise this
place. It's standing on the jetty again looking down onto the rocks. No two days are ever the same
in the week it was so clear with the lovely
lucid green tone. When it's like this and still you really can
see all the way to the seabed quite a way out. not often like this though as I'm hoping to show you
that is if it ever stops raining! If you are a bird spotter this is a good place to stand. Often find groups
of shorebirds of many varieties resting on the rocks. Even the elusive cormorant family of birds
can be seen here. Seldom but it has happened.

Still having blog issues, but some have been resolved. Remember now comments are open on this post
for a few days then they will be closed to new comments to stop the the spam bots and trolls.
The facebook experiment continues. I'm finding it a really useful back up to the sight and it's a great place
to add some videos for you to see.

Hopefully we can have some better days and I can get onto the beach ad photograph whatever I find.
Surely I won't find anything as strange as the chair in the nature reserve on the beach, but this is
a mad town so you never know. What's the weirdest thing you've found on a beach?

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH CRASHING WAVES

Ramsey Beach
Mooragh Promenade
Irish sea

For a change not a reflection shot on mirror like water. Don't cry they will be back. No they're just way to easy. If the water isn't moving you can get away with auto (if you don't mind a slightly bleached out look) as you don't have to alter the speed setting. For majestic crashing waves or for those silky ribbons of mist shots you need to switch to manual. Oh you knew I was going to say that didn't you. The shot might be abstract but the text is consistently mundane.

All you want to do if freeze the action. Now there are several ways to go about this, and one cheat. See if you have a sport mode on your camera. Usually a little man(not being sexist but it's always a little man) running or jumping. Try that mode first. It's a semi auto mode so it will set all your white balances for you. If it's gently crashing water, slow moving this is a great way to freeze the droplets as they are falling. Try it. If you still get a blur then tough luck, it's a manual you need as the sport mode is still to slow for the movement of the water. So no good for this image.

For this shot it was manual. As it was around noon on a sunny day the ISO was 100. The lower the ISO the sharper the image. To freeze the action of the droplets and keep the fluidity of incoming wave a speed of 800 was used A.3. Again fiddle around until you are happy with the setting as each wave will be a different speed. If I had wanted to have the droplets merge into one, those continuous silky water shots that have become fashionable(but not for me) then a tripod is recommended and a remote control. The speed would be altered the other way, ultra low into the minus section and possibly up the ISO to 200 just to have some extra light to counteract you merging the white with the green. Simple eh!

Lesson over. So many emails now that I think it's just simpler to do something like this once a week with an image on a frequently asked question. Actually I'm not the world's best photography teacher, I'm like er you just em' get the camera and er point it at the thingy you want to photograph. Now that's a bit crap really so I will do my best to be sensible, but honestly best advice practise, practise, practise and don't be frightened of your camera. You own it not the other way round.

Remember. You don't make mistakes then you aren't taking photos.

Go on then give me your best shot. I mean image not punch!

A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

The sea is normally calmer than this around Ramsey Promenade, but today it was a on the choppy side. I took a few just for stock/wallpaper and thought I'd use one for a fellow blogger. It's been a tough week for a few bloggers out there for one reason and another, but one especially has had it just that bit harder than most. Being caught between a rock and a hard place is just about how her emotions are at the moment, and like the sea today awash with the blues. No names, no pact drill, just to say it's rough at the moment, but the the tide will turn around and the way to blue, will be bryter later(intentional spelling, re Nick Drake.)

Going off at a complete tangent about older posts. When I put a piece together I do my resaearch. One of my earliest posts featured a piece of artwork that I could have been graffiti could have been artwork. I posted the pic and asked the question which did the reader think it was. I drew a blank on the image, which has subsequently been painted over and put the post to bed. Thanks to MANNANANS CLOAK , I now know about the piece in question. It was indeed artwork. Here's the messgae I received.

"Anyway the picture in question was taken in Douglas of a wall painting which now you say has sadly been painted over. Great piccie by the way as they always, are but I know the artist, Well not so much know the artist as my wife knows her. G, my wife is 99.9% certain that it was painted by her friend Sheena Graham-George who used to be a resident of the island. In fact she lived in Ramsey off North Shore Road but left to live in the Orkneys a few years back. G got to know Sheena as when we first came to live in this fantastic place she didn't work and instead went to art classes where Sheena was the teacher. Anyway thought you'd like to know.....Cheers"

So thank you MANNANANS CLOAK for taking the time and trouble to let me know about this. It had bugged me that no one could even allude to who had created the work. I will try and follow this lead up aswell as I do have another image from the same place. At least it's now been documented by myself and hopefully others out there.

Have you ever had a post that someone has contacted you about to fill in the blanks for you?
