24 - 4 - '24 : un-perfect 10 grams

Today I joined a small fun felting group :
the "un-perfect  10 grams" group

I had seen some of their work already
and thought that it would be nice to join them . . .
and just then, I was invited to take part !

Every now and then they set each other a challenge
using ONLY 10 grams of wool
What kind of wool or what colour
is up to one's own personal choice.
This time there were two more instructions :
- use a resist triangle no bigger than A4
- use NO SOAP at all when felting
?????
Hmmmm, some will raise their eyebrows
felting ? and not using any soap ? is that possible ?

Well I know one thing for sure
on the steppes of Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan (?)
nomadic people make big rugs with lots of wool,
water and indeed : no soap at all !!!
(and they roll it behind a horse for some time as well, haha)

That's the amount of wool allowed
About 5.50 grams was red, the rest orange and pink in equal bits.

One side laid with half the red on the edges and pink in the center
turned and ready for the layers on side two.
One thing that really struck me was
the difficulty getting the wool WET through and through !!!
Normally just a tiny bit of soap does the trick very easily.

Gently rubbing with pressure and the tiniest of movement
under a sheet of bubble wrap
did the trick much easier than thought !

I removed the resist through a tiny slit
and closed this with my normal linen thread
Than more rolling (in cloth) and shaping
and soon after that it was done !

My finished piece
(I'll probably add some stitching when dry !)

The fun part was that tonight I met the other group members
in a special ZOOM meeting
where we told how things went,
good tips and some frustrations and showed the finished goodies.
Such different end products !!!

Thanks ladies
it was fun meeting you all and a fun challenge too !
On to the next meeting, in June !

a day in Hoorn ...

Weavers market in Hoorn
only once a year on a Wednesday in July ...
Many "textile-friends"
have that date fixed in their calendar !

Daughter and I were going by our friend Caroline's car,
a one and a half hour drive from Rotterdam.

A warm and sunny day
(though the weather forecast wasn't that pleasant for the afternoon ...)

There were already lots and lots of people when we arrived !
We split because Caroline waited for some more friends
that were coming from other places.

colours !

peg loom and wooden printing blocks

"Kantha" (inside of a jacket)

"Kantha" (outside of another one)

Soooo much to see ...
sooooo many goodies ...
I know there were others (that I know) on the market
but I hardly saw a familiar face,
only lovely "STUFF"

The five of us had a good lunch near the harbor ...

(no ... no eel ...
they were just bringing these inside, from the "IJsselmeer")

... on a (wobbly) boat, with a view on the harbor mouth
where lots of sailboats were seeking refuge
for the foretold bad weather)

(bad weather that didn't come)

Then back to the market !

Where there was some lady, that makes beautiful shrouds out of felt, for burial

And more stalls with more lovely items.

In the end of the afternoon it was so hot again
that we went home before it all ended.

At home Man waited with hommmme mmmmmade Lasagna !!!
Mmmmmmmmmmmm !

Time to see what goodies the two of us had

A hand dyed shawl, cotton scrim, wool with silk,
silk hankies, labradorite pendant, drop spindle and some
special closures for felted bags.
Abundance !

HAPPY

Because of the sweltering heat in the afternoon
the toads (eight or nine) came out for diner ...
probably flying ants.

What a day !

weavers market

WOW, WOW, WOW !

What a wonderful day we had !
Thanks
daughter, Caroline, Pauline, Jolanda, Margriet and Helma !

But oh my, it was
WET
in the early hours of the market !!!
The rain came pouring down
and that was no fun :
we had to take refuge
under stalls, in shops and restaurants !
Just too bad for the many stall holders
who had to protect their goods with large plastic sheets
and hope for the best !

But eventually it stopped raining

And then, it was gooood  ;-)

Just a colourful impression of some of the wonderful goodies !
(click on the pictures to see them bigger)

Of course daughter and I took some of the goodies home

Yes, some very special things !

Jacket : daughter's ...

belt : mine ...

and lots of stuff for felting, spinning (knitting)
and embroidery.

One of the felting-exchange friends couldn't come
so I had to take one of the felt pieces home with me again.
I'll wait with those pictures
till that one arrived there via the mail.

super fun day

I had looked forward to this day
for a long time !
Today (and also again tomorrow)
there is a felting exhibition and fair
in the Eusebiuskerk in Arnhem.

It was not only fun meeting again
with felting friends and suppliers,
but daughter went with me and
I would meet my Blogging-friend Birgit again !!!
(we tried to arrange a meeting before, but that never worked out)
So we arrived from the "west" and the "east"
and met in Arnhem

interior design (Ellen van der Wiel) and needle felt (Caroline van Noord)

One of our favorite suppliers : Adrian Salomé

So many yummy colours !

           Linda Lammerts            and              Ina Singeling

Carla Louwes

and the delicate fantasy work of Fransje Smit

(and there were many others)

We admired, talked with all kind of people (known or unknown)
bought stuff,  drank tea and coffee, and talked together
and went to "Dudok"
(yes : there is one, and it looks just the same as the one in R'dam  !)
and drank more tea and coffee
and talked a lot more !

What a super fun day,
thanks Birgit
