HOMEMADE LOFI PSYCH --- WHERE TO START?

"There is so much great music here..." WHERE TO START???

I recommend to
start with the HLFP-Samplers (especially HLFP 04).
Here you will come to know many of the bands/musicians featured in this blog. If you like what you hear, you may check out more of their music later on.
(You may also click on the picture on the sidebar and you will find the original post with download links.)

There is also a "FOCUS ON..." section. Here you will find albums that imo are absolutely great (***** = "five-stars-recordings") and that are essential listening and strongly recommended for download.

I TRY to RE-UP some stuff that has been down from time to

time, but I still don't have enough time to

listen to/post much new stuff.

Sorry!

JohnnyX Guitar - back from space (GER 2010)

In January I posted It's all end in nothing by JOHNNYX GUITAR from Hamburg, Germany. (Original post here.)
Here's a new album: back from space, which is quite similar in style, though even more "spacy". You'll find long dark ambient pieces that may indeed evoke some kind of interstellar space feelings... The title is quite appropriate.
Enjoy!

JOHNNYX GUITAR will also be featured with one track on the forthcoming HLFP-Sampler – to be posted in a few weeks.

Modo - small hours (UK 2001-2009)

The man behind MODO is the same guy who is running the project PEDRO AGNO (see post below).

Q: Where exactly are you from?
A: Milton Keynes UK - it's built really simply like a grid and tourists find it confusing.
Q: Do you want your real name mentioned? If so: What is your real name?
A: You should never reveal your real name...
Q: How recorded?
A: Most of the instruments were recorded by plugging a 1/8" jack-plug into my soundcard, but some sounds were softsynths, so i was able to use them directly from the sequencer.
Q: When recorded?
A: I've been recording this stuff for years - since 2001. It is only more recently that the tracks started to take form and become more identifiable as to what style or which other tracks they belong with.
Q: Who involved? Who played what?
A: I like to get local musicians in as much as possible to vary the flavour a bit whilst keeping the core ideologies of the group intact, but the lion's share is done by me in collaboration with some of my invisible friends.
Q: Any more releases? Any "official" releases?
A: Well my record label have recently released a new album for the ninth tentacle, which is a more energetic project than mine - I like to bob along gently - those boys like to race a bit.
Q: Since when does this band/project exist (are you into music)?
A: Hmm, that's tricky... I suppose I would have to say since the release of Trolleys really, as I wasn't playing live before that - just home and studio, so 2009! (has it really been that long already!?)
Q: Any previous bands worth mentioning?
A: I have been involved in a fringe-capacity with recording work on the Mucky Badger album that is due to appear later on this year sometime. That was really exciting - Mucky has a very strange outlook on what sound is so the project appealed to my sense of humour.
Q: How'd you "label" your music?
A: Musicians HATE being Labelled! But i know what it's like trying to organise your mp3's, so I'd say it's loosely something like bedroom lo-fi psychedelic music for the bit that comes after the excitement but before the chillout.
Q: Influences?
A: Air are an enormous influence, at least for Premiers Symptomes which they have never surpassed. I also like chilling out to Loop Guru's disc 'the Third Chamber' - it is a serene masterpiece and I never want it out of my collection!
Q: Is there a special running order of the tracks?
A: There's, at the most, a very loose order - modern audiences are much less likely than we were in the past to listen to a whole album at once, so the idea of a tracklisting has almost gone out of the window. However, ambient music is one of the key exceptions to this rule as people usually want to leave it running whether they fall asleep or zone out or get on with whatever they are doing. I think the one that begins with a telephone dialing sound is my personal favourite one to begin listening with and I like to finish with the one with the horse and footsteps and vehicles at the end, but apart from that, no there is no real order to the tracks, they can be used in any order or even more than one at a time if you are brave!
Q: Website, myspace?
Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...
A: Yeah - pedro agno's gonna twist your brains with this sick shit!
Q: And please tell me, what the ... is OTL?
A: OTL - the name used by our main studio guy when he does his remixes and stuff. It looks like a few things and it could stand for a few things... I like to get people to guess.
(info by Pedro Agno aka Modo)

Necro Deathmort - This Beat Is Necrotronic (UK 2009)

NECRO DEATHMORT's music is a great weird mix of mostly instrumental doom and electronic music and ambient soundscapes. Surely no easy listening!

Q: Where exactly are you from? Do you want your real names mentioned? If so: what are your real names?

A: We are Necro Deathmort from London, and we are a two-piece "band" consisting of AJ Cookson and Matthew Rozeik.

Q: How recorded? Who played what?

A: We use a computer to make everything - no amps, no real drum kits etc. Matt and I both play guitar and splice beats and use any effects we can get our hands on.

Q: When recorded? Influences? Future plans?

A: We put this album together from a stack of material we had come up with over a year or so that reflected our passion for heavy and interesting music of many genres (Autechre, Sunn o)), Neurosis, JK Broadrick, Ulver, Dalek, even UK dubstep). - After the guy who runs Distraction (UK label) heard it he wanted to put it out there and since then we've had a lot of encouraging press etc. Our debut gig is on Feb 10th 2010 at the Scala in London supporting Ulver and hopefully more gigs and releases are in the pipeline.

Q: Any previous bands/side projects worth mentioning?

A: Meanwhile, Matthew has a "proper" band who play live a lot in London, called Astrohenge (http://www.myspace.com/astrohenge) and I work in a few different projects, namely Sol Invicto, a metal drum and bass project, which features Steph from the Deftones on guitar and also Medes (http://www.myspace.com/medesmusic) which is just me and a guitar/laptop!

Q: Website, myspace?

A: http://www.myspace.com/necrodeathmort

Q: Anything that you think is interesting, that you'd like to inform the blog readers about...

A: We continue to record and make music, hopefully there will be another album out this year and some festival slots to arrange... Our myspace is (http://www.myspace.com/necrodeathmort) and the album is available on iTunes and the Distraction site - (http://www.distractionrecords.com/). Feel free to put the free link up but if peeps want the proper cd they should get it from Distraction. It has great artwork by Dom Hailstone who did an Isis and a Mogwai video...

(Thanks to AJ Cookson for the info via email)

Eva Brown And The Infected Whore - HLFP-Song Collection (IT 2009)

From Florence/Firenze, Italy, comes EVA BROWN AND THE INFECTED WHORE, the solo project of a 24 years old guy who recorded all five songs featured here with guitar and computer.

"i think my music is a sort of electronic folk with dark ambient sounds a lot of time... I think my influences are: Nick Drake, some of Industrial scene, Nico..." (EBATIW)

Quite a variety of styles on offer here – from noise ('Heroin') to dark electronic folk ('Lost Child of the Woods') to dark experimental ambient sound collages ('THE ART OF SELF DESTRUCTION'). Very interesting, experimental stuff. Enjoy!

Spacefinger - Spacehand (USA 2009)

Talking about electronic-space-music: Here is SPACEFINGER from Houston,Texas.
Not too long ago I posted 2 albums from 2007, and here you may check out how SPACEFINGER sounds now - in 2009.
All tracks were recorded April 8, 2009 - inspired by the NASA picture of PSR B1509-58. Again you'll find strange fascinating soundscapes from another world, ambient sounds, experimental, relaxing or rather disturbing...
Michael Fuller, the man behind SPACEFINGER, also recorded a new solo work with very different music: a double album collection of acoustic performances entitled "Dusk". Listen and/or download here.
Enjoy!

I gotta say, I'm quite happy with the great resonance. There is an internationality of musicianship to be found here, that really makes me proud (we have artists from Germany, USA, the United Kingdom, Italy, Brazil...), though I really would have liked to hear something from JAPAN, KOREA and... But maybe next time. LOFI PSYCH HEADS UNITE!
THANKS to everyone involved in assembling HLFP 02!
THIS IS YOUR SAMPLER!
And a special THANK YOU to torstn kauke for inspiring this special collection of psych/experimental songs!

Szbutä Soröh - "... I Will Give You a Magic Herb..." (BZ 2008)

"You'll never be able to get past all the dangerous animals in the forest unless you know their language", said the witch. "But I will give you a magic herb..."

Another exiting, heavily disturbing musical journey by our old friend SZBUTĂ„ SORĂ–H (Samuel Macedo), who is based in NiterĂ³i, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Probably even more experimental than his works from last year (see here). Those three untitled tracks here are true homemade recordings from 03 till 07-2008. What exactly is going on is obscure and hard to realize, because Samuel creates a sense of uneasiness and distance by abstracting his source material beyond recognition. This surely isn't easy listening!
Enjoy and visit Samuel's MySpace site!

True Colour Of Blood - All Of The True Things I'm About To Tell You Are Lies (US 2008)

Is this part 4 of my little series called "A VISIT TO THE DARK SIDE"? Well, probably... On the other hand the overall mood of pieces like "Of" is that of calmness and meditation, not that of fear and anxiety.
TRUE COLOUR OF BLOOD is the one-man-band project of Eric Kesner, and "All Of The True Things I'm About To Tell You Are Lies", released on the Gears Of Sand label in April 2008, is already the fifth TCOB realease. What you get is (mostly dark) ambient/drone music and if that is your thing, you clearly should check this one out. It's great. What makes it so special is (if I get it right), that all that you hear is guitar based – no computerized soundscapes, samplers or synthesizers were used.

The listening experience is similar to listening to "Zeit" from the year 1972 of the german electronic avantgarde band TANGERINE DREAM (though musically TCOB is of course somehow quite different): Pure cosmic beauty. Press the repeat button and listen to these tracks over and over. Listen to them all day and all night... and than you will get it. As Julian Cope remarked on "Zeit" (and he could as well have talked about TCOB): It doesn't matter, if you have to go to pee or make some tea in the meantime. When you come back, nothing much has changed. And that, in my opinion, is a great thing. And it's what ambient or drone music is all about. To go on a journey beyond the meaning of time and space...
Check out the very informative site of TCOB and also have a look at Myspace.

If you like the music, please support the artist!!!
