Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid é um filme estadunidense de 1973, do gênero western, dirigido por Sam Peckinpah. O roteiro foi de Rudy Wurlitzer. As canções do filme foram compostas e interpretadas por Bob Dylan, que também atua. Na trama, os últimos dias de Billy the Kid, perseguido pelo seu ex-companheiro de farras Pat Garrett, que agora se tornara um xerife.

James Coburn aceitou trabalhar no filme, porque queria interpretar o legendário xerife Garrett. Era para ser dirigido por Monte Hellman, que alcançara êxito com Two-Lane Blacktop. Quando Peckinpah foi chamado para a direção, sua intenção era transformar a história num fecho da revisão do Velho Oeste que ele havia começado em Ride the High Country e continuado em The Wild Bunch.

Peckinpah reescreveu o roteiro de Wurlitzer, alterando a relação de Billy e Garrett, o que abalou o escritor. Peckinpah queria Bo Hopkins para o papel de Billy, mas acabou acertando com o cantor de música country Kris Kristofferson (sem barba). Kris trouxe para o elenco sua então esposa Rita Coolidge e o cantor Bob Dylan.

Peckinpah procurou homenagear atores lendários do gênero western, contratando para o filme Chill Wills, Katy Jurado, Jack Elam, Slim Pickens e Paul Fix. Jason Robards, que trabalhou com o diretor em seu conturbado filme de 1970, The Ballad of Cable Hogue, também fez uma pequena ponta.

O filme foi rodado em Durango, México, por pressão dos produtores. As dificuldades da realização e montagem, acabaram por prejudicar o resultado final, e Peckinpah não obteve o retorno de público e crítica que merecia. Nos últimos anos foram lançadas versões mais próximas do que o diretor desejava, fazendo com que o filme fosse revalorizado.

Chimes of Freedom | The Songs of Bob Dylan

A gravadora Universal Music reuniu vários artistas com o objetivo de regravar algumas obras de Bob Dylan. O resultado é que no início deste ano, foi lançado o álbum “Chimes of Freedom” (The Songs of Bob Dylan - Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International), reunindo quatro discos com novas interpretações de temas do velho bardo, prestando um tributo aos 50 anos do álbum de estréia de Bob Dylan e ainda uma homenagem aos também 50 anos da Anistia Internacional.

O álbum faz um apanhado na obra de Mr. Zimmerman, por uma plêiade de nomes da música pop e rock mundial. A renda auferida com a venda da caixa, será revertida para a Anistia Internacional.

Vários artistas convidados para as regravações são bem conhecidos do público, como Pete Townshend; Diana Krall; Bryan Ferry; Joan Baez; Adele e Sting. Algumas canções que não poderiam faltar, lá estão, como “Blowin’ In The Wind” interpretada por Ziggy Marley e “Like a Rolling Stone” através de Seal e Jeff Beck.

Outros nomes convidados já causaram polêmica, casos de Ke$ha e Miley Cyrus. Além destes, Dave Mathews Band; Patti Smith; Elvis Costello; My Chemical Romance; Queens of Stone Age; Marianne Faithfull e Eric Burdon, além do próprio Bob, são alguns dos artistas que cantam Dylan, em gravações especialmente produzidas para este projeto.

“Bob Dylan é um artista de relevância quase inigualável na música popular moderna”, diz o biografo Howard Sounes na primeira frase de seu livro lançado em 2001 (no Brasil, no ano seguinte pela Conrad) sobre Robert Allen Zimmerman. O documentário “No Direction Home” (2005), de Martin Scorsese, jogou mais luz sobre um dos artistas menos compreendidos daquilo que se convencionou chamar de música pop, e se serviu para apresentá-lo a novas gerações, não explicou o mito (se pudesse, Dylan diria aqui que não há nada para explicar).

O fato é que Dylan representa um fenômeno cultural e social que permite vislumbres maiores sobre a música como partícula de uma sociedade. Um cara que começou escrevendo canções simples inspiradas em Woody Guthrie e folk singers do começo do século (muitos apresentados a ele pela coletânea “Anthology of American Folk Music”) até criar sua própria persona estética escrevendo canções políticas e arranjar, em 1965/1966, uma briga com os puristas ao amplificar suas canções, o que o aproximou da ala rock and roll conquistando tanto admiração quanto repulsa dos artistas folk.

Em 1965, no auge da polêmica conversão à eletricidade, Bob Dylan respondeu quando perguntado sobre o seu papel: “Sou um cara que canta e dança”. Nada mais certo. Existem vários Dylan: o pai de família, o pregador católico, o guardião da música tradicional americana, mas nenhum supera o Bob Dylan dos anos 60. A imagem de iconoclasta, hipster, descolado, todo de preto, com óculos Ray Ban, chapado de maconha e anfetaminas, ainda persiste. E olha que ele se acidentou quase que mortalmente, converteu-se ao cristianismo, retornou ao judaísmo, casou-se, separou-se, pariu filhos e viu amigos partirem, mas continua “andando em ruas que estão mortas”.

Em quase 50 anos de carreira, Dylan tem mais de 450 composições originais, sendo que uma delas é o hino dos direitos civis (“Blowin The Wind”) e a outra é praticamente a Cidadão Kane do rock (“Like a Rolling Stone”). Com quatro discos de inéditas lançados nos anos 2000, um livro escrito (“Crônicas”), além do documentário feito por Martin Scorsese, o melhor documentarista de rock da história, e de um pretensioso longa feito por Todd Haynes, Bob Dylan continua na ativa, sempre em movimento, como uma pedra que rola.

E o que é melhor: sem viver do passado, sem turnês de despedida, sem sujar seu nome. Raros são os artistas que seguem a sua visão interior de forma tão radical na indústria da música. De todos, Robert Allen Zimmerman é o maior.

Bob Dylan foi um ícone musical, poeta e porta-voz de uma geração que sempre experimentou constantes mutações ao longo da vida, especialmente durante os anos de 1960. Musicalmente, fisicamente, psicologicamente, as alterações do seu personagem público dialogaram com acontecimentos sociais e ocasionaram múltiplas repercussões culturais.
