O primeiro festival de grande porte aconteceu em Monterey, California, em 1967. Este foi seguido pelo Miami Pop Festival (1968), Atlanta International Pop Festival (1969 e 1970), Altamont Speedway Free Festival (1969) e pelo mais conhecido deles, o Woodstock (1969), todos na América.
Na Europa, em 1967, o único festival de música importante era o Moutreaux Jazz Festival, que só passou a receber bandas de rock a partir de 1970, com a presença de artistas como Deep Purple e Santana. Mesmo assim, o festival suíço continuou tento características de um evento de jazz, sendo realizado num cassino e para um público seleto.
O “Isle of Wight” foi o primeiro festival europeu a céu aberto, de grande porte e reunindo bandas de rock de expressão. A primeira edição foi realizada em 1968 tendo em seu line-up bandas como Jefferson Airplane, Smiles, Tyrannosaurus Rex de Marc Bolan e foi, até então, o maior festival já realizado na Inglaterra. Só houve um dia de shows, assistido por aproximadamente 10.000 pessoas.
No ano seguinte, o festival já contava com algum prestígio e conseguiu reunir nomes de mais peso como: The Who, Joe Cocker, The Band, The Moody Blues, Free, Richie Havens e Bob Dylan. O sucesso foi ainda maior do que o da primeira edição, e finalmente a Europa entrava no circuito dos grandes festivais de rock. Em dois dias de shows, o festival conseguiu reunir cerca de 150.000 pessoas, um aumento considerável de público.
O auge do Isle of Wight Festival foi em 1970, quando contou com a participação de cerca 50 artistas durante cinco dias consecutivos, reunindo um público de quase 600.000 pessoas, sendo que a população da ilha não chegava a 100.000 habitantes. A grande confusão feita pelos visitantes aterrorizou os moradores de Wight. Foi uma grande movimentação para aquela pacata ilha.
Essa movimentação pode ser vista no documentário “Message to Love – The Isle of Wight Festival”, lançado em 1997. Além disso, o filme mostra trechos de shows antológicos da edição de 1970.
É difícil destacar momentos altos do festival, já que um sem-número de grandes bandas fizeram parte do line-up. Tentarei aqui destacar alguns dos muitos inesquecíveis shows.
O segundo dia teve como destaques as bandas emergentes do rock progressivo Supertramp, Black Widow e o cantor estadunidense Tony Joe White. Nesse dia, tocaram ainda Terry Reid (hoje conhecido como o cara que recusou convites para cantar no Led Zeppelin e Deep Purple), além do brasileiro Gilberto Gil, convidado como representante do Tropicalismo.
A partir da sexta-feira, as grandes bandas começaram a se apresentar. É certo que em 1970, bandas como Cactus, Family, Chicago, Taste e Procol Harum não eram tão famosas ainda. Mas todas elas alcançaram relativo sucesso, algumas delas sendo consideradas grandes mitos da história do rock.
O festival esquentou de vez no quarto dia, quando se apresentaram Emerson Lake And Palmer, Miles Davis, Sly & The Family Stone, O Free de Paul Rodgers e Simon Kirke, Ten Years After e Joni Mitchell. Mas o grande destaque deste sábado foram as apresentações do The Who e do The Doors. Pete Townshend e companhia executaram, na íntegra, a recém-lançada ópera-rock “Tommy”, além de alguns sucessos antigos e músicas inéditas como “I Don’t Even Know Myself” que acabou nunca sendo lançada em álbuns oficiais da banda.
A apresentação do The Doors no Isle of Wight Festival é considerada uma das mais antológicas da banda e ficou marcada como uma das últimas aparições de Jim Morrison, que viria a falecer menos de um ano depois.
O Festival foi encerrado num domingo, 30 de agosto, com shows de Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, entre outros. O Grand Finale ficou por conta de Jimi Hendrix, anunciado ainda como seu trio Experience, mas se apresentando já com sua nova banda, com Billy Cox, no baixo, mas ainda com Mitch Mitchell na batera. Um show antológico, destaque para a inédita “Ezy Rider”. Bela forma de se encerrar um festival.
Depois disso, foram longuíssimos 32 anos até que o rock voltasse a pequena ilha inglesa. O festival foi retomado no início desse século, mas sem o mesmo brilho. O maior destaque das novas edições do Isle of Wight foi o grandioso show dos The Rolling Stones, em 2007. Fora isso, nunca mais aquela ilhota recebera shows com a magia característica de fins dos anos 1960 e início dos 70.
