Listen to the archived broadcast, recorded Friday, January 30 at 8 pm, with Riccardo Muti leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in a night out at sea as they perform pieces by Mendelssohn, Debussy and Scriabin.

Muti begins the program with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture, a piece inspired by Goethe’s poems Calm at Sea and The Prosperous Voyage, depicting a more personal rather than literal journey through “deathly” still waters.

The CSO continues the evening with Debussy’s La Mer, a symphonic portrait worked solely from the composer’s memory of summers spent in Cannes. Muti ends the program with Scriabin’s The Divine Poem a four-part tone poem without pause. With the sections translating to “Struggles,” “Delights,” and “Divine Play,” the bridge between a literal and metaphorical journey through ever-changing waters comes to a close.

This concert marks the first of three concerts by the CSO at Carnegie Hall this month. Muti has been music director of the CSO since 2010.

The First Symphony of Alexander Scriabin closes with a paean to art, written by the composer and sung by two soloists and chorus, after five movements featuring the orchestra. The second half is Prokofiev’s bracing cantata Alexander Nevsky, drawn from his score to Sergei Eisenstein’s famous film. The texts for both works may be found below.

Award-winning British pianist and stalwart of the concert platform Peter Donohoe performs music by three of the early 20th Century's greatest figures. He begins with one of Alexander Scriabin's latest masterpieces - his chromatic, and almost atonal Piano Sonata No.7 "White Mass" - composed as a sort of exorcism for the darkness of his previous sonata. Ravel's "Miroirs" was composed around 1905 and dedicated to his five fellow members of the Parisian group of "artistic outcasts" - Les Apaches.
He ends the concert with Rachmaninov's set of 13 Preludes, composed in 1910.
