Done with 2021
Since everyone else is doing it, I might as well offer my own year-end retrospective. Personally, 2021 was a horrible year, as old age claimed two close family members, and COVID showed no signs of ending (thanks, anti-vaxxers!).
On the gaming front, not much better. My group attempted to start up gaming again on a regular basis in July, but the pandemic came back with a vengance, so we had to put that on hold again. I did manage to slap paint on an average of one miniature a week (if you count some of the terrain pieces I made, which I did)--and I did attend MillenniumCon and run my Monopolis game two times! And I did manage to keep this blog going. Thanks everyone for their feedback, I apologize if I haven't yet responded to your comments.
I'm not going to set any goals for the coming year--recent history has shown me that's futile--but I will try to game and enjoy what I can and share it on this blog. Meanwhile, here's wishing you and yours a brighter new year in 2022.

Gaming plans for the new year
I own more starship minis than I will ever be able to get on the table at the same time, so I don't plan on buying anything else. I do have a few Entomalian ships that I need to get painted. But my main goal for the coming year is to put on a large (eight-player) scenario using as many of those models as I can, along with all my set dressing: planets, asteroids, space station. I want to playtest it, run it for the local group, and take it to a game convention. I want to call it Operation Bug Tussle.
I also want to expand, refine, and run Siege of Monopolis for Ogre again. I also want to play some D&D, and maybe run a skirmish campaign. I want to play in a Hordes of the Things campaign. But most of all I want to just game on a regular basis.
What do you want to do, gaming-wise, in 2015?

Adios, old year!
- I ran a D&D campaign using the blue Holmes basic rulebook, drawing several players to several sessions.
- I played a little Hordes of the Things and some X-Wing.
- I played a whole lotta Ogre with my new Designer's Edition and using the Pocket Edition.
- I obsessed over putting together a large Ogre scenario for Millenniumcon--and I actually did it, compiling the minis and the terrain and coming up with Siege of Monopolis, which was a success.

Merry Christmas!
Me, I want to get in some Ogre with my brother later this weekend. What sort of gaming do you have planned?

Dungeons & Dragons & birthdays
Sounds good to me. And while a lot of old-school D&D players associate the game with the original white box, for me D&D will always be linked to the first basic set, edited by J. Eric Holmes. That was my first roleplaying game, and I got it on my birthday, which is also in January.
My parents bought me D&D after hearing me blather on about it for weeks, since I first heard about it from friends. This version had been out for several years, and it came with dungeon module B2 Keep on the Borderlands and numbered chits instead of dice. I raided the family's Risk box for six-siders to roll up characters, and soon after, I had my bemused parents and brother at the table, taking them through an adventure for an evening, the first (and only) time we all played D&D together.
That box and that rulebook are long lost--the container was flattened and thrown away, and I cut up my original blue book to place the sample dungeon in a folder with adventures pulled out of various issues of The Dragon--but this version of the game will always be my favorite. I've since replaced the boxed set with a used earlier printing acquired for ten bucks at a hobby shop (which also contained three original D&D supplements and Swords & Spells) and even found a couple more copies of the blue book in used bookstores.
And after months of thinking about it and weeks of preparation, a couple of weeks ago, I brought to my table a half-dozen players to go through a dungeon I created, going (mostly) with the Holmes rules as written. Now, the game I got as a birthday present more than thirty years ago is celebrating a milestone of its own.
Happy 40th, D&D, and here's to many more!

Looking back on 2012
- I attended two game conventions, GuadaComaCon and MillenniumCon, and I ran games of Star Navy at both these cons.
- I ran a starship campaign with strategic moves from online admirals and battles fought on my gaming table with local commanders (which kind of fizzled out after the last big battle).
- I released my own starship combat game, Kill Radius, which even got linked to on Starship Combat News.
- Although I didn't organize a gameday, I did get to play in a Hordes of the Things campaign.
- I painted and based plenty of spaceships, including a new fleet.
- I completed a forest's worth of miniature trees for land combat games.
Of course, we all start out the new year with good intentions, and there were a number of objectives that I didn't come close to finishing:
- I didn't even start working on a 28mm scale game board for Search for the Emperor's Treasure.
- I purchased the materials to build a 3'x4' battle board for HotT, Song of Blades and Heroes, and other games, but they're still in the shrinkwrap.
- While I bought waaaaay to many new figures in 2012, I didn't complete even one new army for Hordes of the Things.
- So much for my idea of scratchbuilding structures for 1:300 sci-fi games--guess it's time to throw out all the plastic lids, old ballpoint pen parts, and other junk I'd collected for that purpose.

Christmas lists
So that's what I want: more gaming! Hopefully, when I see my family this holiday, I can get a game or two in with my brother.
What about you, readers? Any gaming goodies on your Christmas list? Any plans for holiday games?

Since everyone else is doing it ...
Most of the gaming stuff I acquired during the time I was away from the hobby, except as a reader--although the shelves contain quite a few recent finds as well. Note that there's not just gaming material on these shelves; there are also sci-fi novels, comic books, and even SF art books.
I have to confess that I don't usually do much playing from these books. I read the various tomes and adventures mostly for relaxation and inspiration, although I do consult them to look up an esoteric rule every now and then. And yes, that's a Trapper Keeper, where I stashed all my characters and dungeons I created as a kid! Anyone else have one of those?

Happy Thanksgiving!
Now, most of the folks I game with live in another city, and they all have holiday plans of their own. Still, I'm grateful for all the games I've taken part in this year--not to mention family, health, employment, etc.
So even if there's no dice rolling and minis moving, I'm having a good Thanksgiving. And who knows, my dad's reading a book about the Battle of the Bulge--maybe I can talk him into a game of Axis and Allies.

Announcement: No more starship gaming
The decision is personal, but I will just say that after sleep deprivation, bright lights, and enhanced baptismal techniques, the church fathers have convinced me that the idea of spaceships contradicts the Bible's description of the Earth as the center of the universe. They also don't like the concept of a globular world.
Later this week, I will be melting down all my spaceships as instruments of the devil. I am switching to only church-approved wargaming, which does not allow the use of dice (random results = games of chance = gambling = sin = damnation). I thought I might be allowed to play chess, but as that game contains the taint of Catholicism (with its bishops and such), I will be wargaming with checkers from now on.

My take on the newly announced edition of D&D
Nerds gonna rage.
Players gonna play.
Fans gonna boy.
...
And that's all I have to say about that.
