Game 126 - Bretonnia - 2014/12/27

Game 4 - Adam - Bretonnia - Blood and Glory

In game 4 I had a pleasure to play against another Master player, Adam.  He almost made it this year too but the competition was tough and the final rankings was decided with the most recent tournaments. Interestingly, despite attending many tournaments together, we played against each other only once, during ANUWTF 2014 tournament. Adam had Beastmen army then and I was lucky to win so I was sure he was looking forward to even the score! Another thing you can be sure when playing against Adam is that he will do his best to give you run for your money but at the same time it will be in extremely sporty fashion!

We played modified Blood and Glory scenario. 400VP points were earned extra for breaking the opponent first. 200VP were earned for breaking the opponent second.

For this tournament Adam decided to bring Bretonnian army and this is how his list looked like:

Bretonnia - Army List

Lord, warhorse, Virtue of Heroism, The Heartwood Lance, Charmed Shield, Tress of Isoulde - 231

Game 96 - Bretonnia - 2014/01/22

Game 3 - Bretonnia - Richard - Meeting Engagement

Meeting engagement scenario is really interesting. First, you really don't know what is going to end up in reinforcements. So you have to be ready to adapt quickly, especially if that level 4 does not show up and you are going second :) Then the fancy deployment zones can throw you out of balance as armies can be really close to each other. After all it is only 12" between deployment zones. The good thing is, however, that you know if you are going first or second. At least against Bretonnians as when they prey you automatically get first turn.

Bretonnians are always a tough nut to crack as their armour and ward saves can deflect a lot of blows directed at them. They are also very fast. Let's see what Richard had in his force in particular:

Bretonnia - Army List

Lord, Knight's Vow, Sword of Strife, Enchanted Shield, Potion of Foolhardiness, Talisman of Luck, Virtue of Heroism
Prophetess, level 4, warhorse, Book of Asur, Mane of the Purebreed - Lore of the Beast

BSB, warhorse, Banner of Defence, Knight's Virtue, Virtue of Knightly Temper

Paladin, warhorse, shield, lance, Knight's Virtue, Potion of Strength, Tress of Isolde
Paladin, warhorse, great weapon, Questing Vow, Dragon Helm, Dawnstone
Damsel, warhorse, level 1, Dispel Scroll - Lore of the Beast

12 Knights Errant, FC, Banner of Swiftness
6 Knights Errant, Standard, Musician
6 Knights of the Realm, Standard, Musician, Gleaming Pennant
9 Knights of the Realm, Standard, Musician, Warbanner

18 Bowmen, Braziers, Defensive Stakes

Game 45 - Bretonnia - 2012/11/24

Greetings!

Please, accept my apologies for the delay but fortunately I have finally managed to find time to write the last report from the Hammer of Dave tournament. Last round I played against Murray (Adam's dad whom I faced in round 2) and armored might of Bretonnian army. :)

Army List and pre-battle thoughts

Bretonnian knights are always troublesome. Their high armor save and additional ward save mean they have a good chance to deflect even the mightiest blows. And their S3 in combats when they do not charge is still enough to kill lightly armored elves. Their great speed and formidable lance formation can be the bane of many units of regular size, even more so in the case of MSU type. But they often have quite a nice selection of heroes among regular knights and that makes things even more difficult. If you add to that trebuchets and bowmen who also can hurt small units then you can see that that match up is definitely quite tough.

Murray had a more classical approach to the army list building which means that there was a mixture of knightly units supported by reasonable number of bowmen and field trebuchets. Unfortunately I cannot remember many items his heroes carried and if I made a mistake then it is due to fading memory. I really should have written these reports quicker.

Bretonnia - Army List

Lord, Barded warhorse, heavy armor, shield, Virtue of Heroism, Dawnstone
Prophetess, Barded warhorse, Chalice of Malfleur - Lore of Life
BSB, barded warhorse, heavy armor, shield, Gromril Great Helm
Paladin, barded warhorse, heavy armor, shield, Morning Star of Fracasse, Dragonhelm
Paladin, barder warhorse, heavy armor, Enchanted Shield

9 Knights Errant, Full Command
8 Knights of the Realm, Full Command
8 Knights of the Realm, Full Command
10 Bowmen
10 Bowmen
10 Bowmen

3 Pegasus Knights, Champion

9 Grail Knights, Banner, Musician

Game 35 - Bretonnia - 2012/09/17

Greetings!

This time I had a great opportunity to play a game against Lord Anathir (ShadowMage for UB players). He mentioned long time ago that he would like to provide a proper test for my MSU army and finally we met at the battlefield. He also gave me a choice between his Dwarves or Bretonnians. Since I am at the moment still healing after the beating I got while assaulting a Dwarven castle I picked Brets. I knew roughly what his army is going to have and it was a different kind of challenge. Flying Circus! :)

Army Lists and pre-battle considerations

Bretonnia in general is tough opponent. With high armor save, ward save all around and fast troops it is hard to inflict significant damage and picking up fights is not easy either. We also played ETC rules as LA plans to attend that event next year but I thought we are using only rules for terrain and such. As it turned out, LA brought his 2400 and I had my usual 2500, which luckily for me fits the current rules pack too. I still feel embarrassed though that we didn't check that out before the game

Brets might look like one dimensional army and it is true that they don't have that many options as other armies but I think they are still doing great despite having one of the oldest army books out there. As I have mentioned earlier, LA brought flying circus and here are the details:

Bretonnia - Army List

Lord, Pegasus, Asf sword, Hkb, Dawnstone, Dragonhelm

Game 24 - Bretonnia - 2012/06/12

Greetings!

As a first opponent of Wintercon 2012 I faced Ben and his Bretonnians. We started with Battle line scenario as a warm up.

Army list and pre-battle considerations

Despite having quite outdated army book Bretonnians are force to be respected. Very tough to kill thanks to their ward save and very dangerous if you let them charge in, especially with 2+ lances with characters. What is more, thanks to special rules of Fey Enchantress who led Ben's army, they actually had a chance to start first, which is something unexpected. Ben's army was also unique because it had horde of halbardiers led by a hero and Questing Knights. I must apologize but I cannot remember the magic items Paladins had but I do remember there were no magic banners in the army.

Bretonnia - Army List

Fey Enchantress - Lore of Life
BSB
Paladin on Horse
Paladin on Horse
Paladin on Foot
Damsel
, Level 1, Dispel Scroll - Lore of Beasts

9 Questing Knights, Full Command
8 Knights of the Realm, Full Command
5 Knights of the Realm, Full Command

3 Pegasus Knights, Champion

40 Men-at-Arms, Halberds, Full Command
12 Bowmen, Banner, Flaming Arrows
10 Skirmishers

Game 5 - Bretonnia - (2012/01/07)

Greetings!

I played my first battle in 2012 against an old friend and his Bretonnians. He didn't play much in 8th edition and he also wanted to try it out with Universal Battle. Hence my 7th game in preparation to the tournament was a simple pitched battle instead of Watchtower scenario.

Army Lists and Pre-battle considerations

My friend is known for fielding relatively large numbers of Men-at-Arms and his unorthodox approach towards Bretonnia. Hence his armies often lack the most powerful units like Grail Knights. He also decided not to have unit in his army he would not be able to field in real game (such as not assembled 2nd trebuchet). However, I never underestimate knights of Bretonnia as I have already learned that they are very resilient and very fast. As always I present the list as I remember it and I will update it later as soon as I obtain more details.

Bretonnia - Army List

Bretonnian Lord on warhorse, Dawnstone, Sword of Antiheroes, Gauntlet of Duel - General
Bretonnian Lord on Royal Pegasus, Virtue of the Ideal, Enchanted Shield
Damsel on warhorse, Silver Mirror - Lore of Life
Damsel on warhorse, Dispel Scroll - Lore of Beast
BSB on warhorse, Gromril Great Helm, Sword of Might

10 Knights of the Realm, FC, War Banner
7 Knights of the Realms, FC, Standard of Discipline
6 Errant Knights, FC
6 Errant Knights, FC
30 Men-at-Arms, FC
30 Ment-at-Arms, FC, Spears
12 Bowmen
10 Skirmisher Bowmen
Trebuchet

Quite character heavy if you ask me and I was curious how both lords are going to perform this game. Definitely not something you can see often.
