Game 1 - Warriors of Chaos - 2024/03/04

Greetings!

It's been quite a long time since I played any game and wrote a battle report. However, with the release of the Warhammer the Old World, I really wanted to organize something as soon as possible to test the new game. Fortunately, my brother was also very interested in trying out a new army and we played our very first TOW game online on Universal Battle 2

Warhammer the Old World

When I read the rules for the first time, my impression was that Warhammer the Old World is a different game to what I have known so far through all the editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battles. It is because there are so many, often subtle, changes to the rules that only look familiar on the surface. And quite a lot of completely new ones.

At the same time I really wanted to see if I could come up with the version of the 8th edition army that I really liked playing with. Hence, the army I used in the very first game is very much an early idea. I assumed that there will be a lot of changes to be made afterwards. I simply considered it as an experiment, hoping that some of the prior experiences would still help in learning the new game.

Outcasts in the Old World

We decided to build armies at 2000 points. I don't know what will be the new standard yet but I thought it is a good starting point. I should have enough models painted for such army so if I settled on something, it should be easier to re-base it. We also assumed that with the new rules, there will be a lot of time spent on checking them during the game. Hence, we hoped 2000 points would be a good balance between how many different things we could include in a single army and time spent on a game.

Game 130 - Warriors of Chaos - 2015/02/23

Game 3 - Meeting Engagement - Chris - Warriors of Chaos

After two great games of civil war against other High Elf armies it was time to face one of the archenemies - Warriors of Chaos. I had a great pleasure to play for the very first time against Chris and his legion of steel. We also played Meeting Engagement scenario. I find it always interesting as it may influence the deployment but not only in a negative way (when your war machines end up in reserves for instance) but also in a positive manner (when you have some fast units as reinforcements).

It also creates more choices to be made, in particular for the player who wins the roll off and has to pick one from four possible deployment zones. Personally, I prefer to lose that roll off and deploy when the enemy is already arrayed for battle, as that allows me to counter some threats better. On the other hand, with the diagonal deployment and against combat orientated armies like WoC, the distance between the armies can be shorter for my liking.

But let's have a look at the army Chris brought to CanCon:

Warriors of Chaos - Army List

Sorcerer, General, Level 2, Barded Chaos Steed, Scroll of Shielding -161 - Lore of Metal
Exalted Champion, Battle Standard Bearer, Mark of Tzeentch, Shield, Flail, Barded Chaos Steed, Obsidian Amulet, Gamblers Armour - 219

Game 5 - Charles - Warriors of Chaos - Battle for the Pass

In my last game I played against Charles who is a veteran of Warhammer. He used to win tournaments a decade ago and he wrote this excellent article everybody should read:

Irresistible Force - Issue 4

we were about to play modified Battle for the Pass scenario where there were three counters on the battle field. If your unit ended the game on it you got the objective and 200VP bonus points for each.

Charles had a very intriguing army, both in terms of composition and visual effects. It was modelled with the use of Easterlings miniatures from Lord of the Rings series but the characters were special too.

Game 111 - Warriors of Chaos - 2014/05/28

Game 4 - John - Monsters of Chaos - Blood and Glory

Game 4 and this time I met John, another frequent attendant of the tournaments (both WFB and 40K I might add) and this particular event organizer (one of two). We were about to play Blood and Glory scenario where breaking the enemy gave you extra victory points but didn't stop the game. How hard you broke them also mattered as:

1. If you break your enemy - 200VP
2. If you are first to break the enemy - 200VP
3. If the enemy is broken and 1 fortitude point below his breaking point - 200VP
4. If the enemy is broken and 2 fortitude point below his breaking point - 200VP

Breaking point at 2400 is 3.

I was about to face yet another Forces of Destruction army, yet another Warriors of Chaos force but this time of the Monster of Chaos flavour:

Game 3 - Spencer - Tzeentch Warriors - Meeting Engagement

In the third game I had a great pleasure to play against Spencer and his Tzeentch Warriors. I have never played against Spencer before but I know he finished 8th on CanCon 2014! We played Meeting Engagement scenario with no modifications to the rules from the rule book. Warriors of Chaos are always a tough opponent and this time the challenge was to try and win against he following army list:

My new army was about to be tested against yet another version of Monster of Chaos army list my most trusted sparring partner, Eastern Barbarian, decided to bring to the field. I had two games against similar list of his before so I was curious what iteration he is going to bring this time. Btw, I got the details after the game as we played with close lists.

Game 99 - Warriors of Chaos - 2014/02/05

Game 1 - Jonathan - Warriors of Chaos - Dawn Attack

I met Jonathan at ConVic last year but we didn't have a chance to play against each other. He told me he is reading my reports and I must admit I was very happy to find out he likes them. We talked about Warhammer at a few opportunities and parted with a promise that next time we meet we should definitely gave a game.

When CanCon was on the horizon TO's started to accept grudges and to my surprise I was challenged to fight the first battle! Jonathan decided I need a proper schooling by his tough as nails Warriors of Chaos! I gladly accepted as I knew he will be a challenging but very nice opponent. What can you ask more for? :)

Jonathan brought his Slaaneshi themed Warriors and the list details were as follows:

Slaanesh Warriors - Army List

Sorceror Lord, Level 4, Mark of Slaanesh, Steed of Slaanesh, Unholy Strike, Charmed Shield, Sword of Striking, Talisman of Preservation, The Other Trickster's Shard - Lore of Slaanesh

Game 85 - Warriors of Chaos - 2013/11/10

Game 4 - King of the Hill - Warriors of Chaos - Marcel

King of the Hill was a modified Watch Tower scenario. Instead of the building we had a fort in the middle, which was treated as a building with the following exception:

1. The garrison is -1 to hit with shooting and close combat attacks.
2. The garrison has +1CR in combat and +1 LD but not steadfast.
3. Combat resolution is counted based on wounds and standards only.

Depending on who had the fort by the end of the game different bonus points applied:

1. 5 BP if you kept the fort
2. 2.5 BP each if fort was not occupied by any army

This time Marcel was my opponent and he brought a very interesting army that was heavily converted from Beastmen miniatures and represented his mutated Warriors of Chaos.

Warriors of Chaos - Army List

Nurgle Daemon Prince, General, 2+ armor save (I think re-rollable) and 2+ ward against flaming attacks

Game 80 - Warriors of Chaos - 2013/07/31

Battle 5 - Warriors of Chaos - Meeting Engagement

After fighting a greenskin menace I was about to clash with yet another evil army (funny how in this tournament I was facing forces of destruction all the time :)). This time I had a great pleasure to play against Travis and his wonderfully converted Warriors of Chaos army. Travis is an amazing painter (and fast too!) and I have already had a chance to admire his fantastic Gnoblar "Wood Elves" army at CanCon. If I only managed to take better photos from that game.

What was also important in that game was the Meeting Engagement. There are a lot of factors one needs to take into account here. Armies can be deployed closer to each other. There is a slim possibility that the enemy will steal the initiative so while trying to take advantage of that first turn it pays off to be a little cautious too. And last but not least it was also a big question mark which units (if any!) are going to end up in reserves. We both had a significant amount of regiments that increased the chances of some of the units being out of the battle field. In general it is an interesting option as it opens new possibilities. But if you end up without your main wizard, for example, it might not be that nice.

Travis themed his army around Khorne Warriors but there were some additions from followers of other deities and the whole army formed some kind of unholy alliance. His army looked more or less like this (as always apologies for lack of details):

Warriors of Chaos - Army List

Sorcerer Lord, level 4 - Lore of Nurgle
Sorcerer, level 1 - Lore of Shadow
BSB on Daemonic Mount

10 Warriors, Shields, Halberds, Full Command, Mark of Khorne, Banner of Eternal Flame

Game 77 - Warriors of Chaos - 2013/07/21

Battle 2 - Watchtower - Warriors of Chaos

Dreaded watchtower scenario. It was modified for the purpose of the tournament. First of all there was a bonus for a watchtower. If by the end of the game you occupied the watchtower you got 1000VP extra. Massive bonus if you ask me. Second, at no point the unit acting as a garrison could have more than 20 models in it (monstrous infantry counted extra, can't remember how many models though). If the number of models increased beyond that - the unit had to leave the tower immediately.

It is still hard scenario and with a massive bonus it was probably the game when the winner wins big. I was concerned with the fact that if I were to play warriors and if they put a unit of 20 nurgle warriors there I would be in trouble. I could try to thin them down but at great cost. Also, since that requires constant assaulting of the tower, I might not have enough units to protect the assault teams from the rest of the enemy army.

And the enemy army looked like this:

Tzeentch Warriors - Army List

Daemon Prince, level 3, 1+ armor - Lore of Tzeentch
BSB
Hero on Daemonic Mount
Sorcerer,
level 2, Disk - Lore of Tzeentch

12 Tzeentch Warriors, Hand Weapon, Shield, Full Command
12 Tzeentch Warriors, Hand Weapon, Shield, Full Command

Game 74 - Warriors of Chaos - 2013/06/26

Hi guys!

This time I was lucky that Joel, whom I have met on two tournaments already, was visiting the capital village and offered me a game. He wanted to test his army for the upcoming tournament with Swedish Comp (yes, I know, boring :)). We decided on a battle line but let's have a look at Joel's list first:

Game 73 - Monsters of Chaos - 2013/06/20

Wardancer showed many times that he is all for unorthodox armies but you would be surprised to think that they lack the punch. Just the contrary! For this game I had only one request. To meet 9.5 minimum score for Swedish Comp as it is used in the tournament I would like to attend next month.

The theme of Monsters of Chaos was present in this topic before. Wardancer built his army on the foundations of the previous one but with some significant changes.

Game 3 - Warriors of Chaos - Meeting Engagement

One of the good things of attending tournaments is that in time you start having quite a group of people you have already played against and would like to have a re-match. It was indeed the case in game 3, when I faced Joel's Warriors of Chaos who have just received new goodies! I played against Joel's tough as nails warriors at CanCon and it was great to have an opportunity to play against their new version so soon. I really didn't know what to expect as the new lists are still tested and although some "must-have" choices seem to clear out then it is still matter of personal taste. Joel was kind enough to send me his army list with details so for a change all is there :)

Game 64 - Monsters of Chaos - 2013/04/10

Outcasts vs. Monsters of Chaos

With the recent release of Warrior of Chaos army book a lot of players were eager to test their new ideas and check new options available for them. Wardancer aka Eastern Barbarian also wanted to do so and I was more than happy to line up a thin blue line of High Elven warriors to test his new army.

Always unorthodox with his approach and great Swedish Comp fan, he came up with an idea of a Monster of Chaos army. I don't remember all the details (hopefully Wardancer will help me out later on) but that was his 2500 list:

Monsters of Chaos - Army List

Daemon Prince, Level 4, Chaos Armor, Enchanted Shield, Soul Feeder, Chaos Familiar (?) - Lore of Nurgle

Game 7 - Warriors of Chaos - Dawn Attack

A year ago there was a Watch Tower scenario played as 7th game. This year TO's decided to swap it with Dawn Attack. Given the choice I would go for Dawn Attack any day as I don't quite like win all - lose all scenarios.

Having said that I knew I was up for another tough challenge due to scenario rules anyway. When I got to know I am about to fight Warriors of Chaos I knew it is even more difficult task.

In game 7 I had a pleasure to play against Joel and his beautifully painted army. I must admit that this is very important aspect for me and I always cherish the opportunity to play in such circumstances. There is also another great topic to discuss after (or even during!) the game.

Joel's army was as tough as it was beautiful though :) No less than three silver surfers backed up by 2 skull crusher steamrollers, one warriors of chaos regiment and huge, 52 strong marauders of chaos horde. Joel was very kind to give me a copy of his army list so here are all the details:

Warriors of Chaos - Army List

Sorcerer Lord, Level 4, Mark of Tzeentch, Disc, Charmed Shield, Talisman of Preservation, Dispel Scroll, 3rd Eye of Tzeentch - Lore of Tzeentch

Game 30 - Warriors of Chaos - 2012/06/25

Greetings!

Battle 7 was played with the use of modified Watchtower scenario where whoever controlled the the tower by the end of the game received extra 500VP. Other rules applied as normal. This time I had a great pleasure to play against Chris and his Khorne Warriors!

Army List and pre-battle considerations

Watchtower scenario can be tough one but thanks to the modification it was actually an interesting one. 500VP is a nice bonus but do not make you win by very large margin just by keeping the garrison in the tower. On the other hand if you ignore the enemy unit defending it then you can still have a chance to win the game regardless.

Chaos Warriors are always a tough army to play against, no matter what is the list. Tough units, well armored units, cheap units, hard hitting too. My previous experience from CanCon was definitely helpful but then I lost twice against them. Can it be the time for a rematch?

Khorne Warriors - Army List

With apologies to Chris for any inconsistencies and missed magic items .

Game 12 - Warriors of Chaos - (2012/02/07)

CanCon 2012 - Battle 6 - Battle Line

Tournament battle number 6, the last battle of day 2. In this game I faced yet another Warriors of Chaos army. This time, however, it was MSU force and it was a fantastic display of "300" theme incorporated into fantasy army. Sean (aka Nasher) who led this magnificent force to battle is a very experienced player and ETC veteran so I knew it was going to be a great game and a challenge for me! Funny enough I talked to Sean before when I noticed his Slaaneshi Spartans and commented I would like to face his army on the battlefield very much! Here we go then! A wish came true! :)

Battle line has been my favorite scenario so far (although I have fun with other too!) as it gave me an opportunity to use deployment advantage and I had space to outflank and outpace my enemy. This time this advantage was canceled out for me. It was very difficult to predict which unit would go where and although in theory there were some favorable targets it didn't mean it would be easy to get to them and even then it might not be that easy to defeat these regiments. Let's have a look at the Warriors of Chaos army list then

Warriors of Chaos - Army List

Sorcerer Lord, Level 4, Chaos Armour, Barded Chaos Steed, Infernal Puppet, Necrotic Phylactery, Charmed Shield, Biting Blade - Lore of Death
Exalted Hero BSB, Mark of Slaanesh, Halberd, Chaos Armour, Barded Chaos Steed, Dragonhelm

16 Chaos Warriors, Mark of Slaanesh, Halberd, Standard, Musician, Banner of the Eternal Flame
38 Chaos Marauders, Mark of Slaanesh, Great Weapon, Standard, Musician

5 Chaos Knights, Mark of Slaanesh,Musician
5 Chaos Knights, Mark of Slaanesh,Musician
5 Chaos Knights, Mark of Slaanesh,Musician
Chaos Chariot
Chaos Chariot

To be honest I didn't have a good plan how to put up a proper fight against this army but I remembered that in general Sean might need more space to deploy it so I wanted to use it and put more units on one flank. It still will require some exchange, bait and flee or even straight brutal fight but I thought this approach might give me a chance to break through the flank and get some breathing space. I had a slight advantage in magic (or so I thought) and if I rolled good spells I might actually have an additional tool to deal with marauder hordes.

Game 11 - Warriors of Chaos - (2012/02/05)

CanCon 2012 - Battle 5 - Meeting Engagement

Time for Battle 5, this time I faced Peter with Warriors of Chaos in Meeting Engagement scenario.

Meeting engagement is a difficult scenario for my army as the enemy is very close to my lines and with so many units I can have few of them in reserves which might but as well might not be a good thing. What is more I was about to fight against tough army with composition rating of 4. Check the list below and you will see why :) (I do not remember all the items as I don't have a copy of that army list so forgive me any mistakes or omissions.)
