San Diego trip over the 4th of July

Sorry if this is not directly related to Gaming but there is a bit of history and militaria in this trip.

So as I mentioned in a few of the last posts, we took a family trip to San Diego California to sight see and go the Safari Park Zoo.

I took over 1000 pictures, most of them a blurry mess, which I distilled to around 270 and will show about 28 of them here. They are reduced to 20% of their actual size and I hope give the flavor of what we experienced.

First off the Museum of Man in Balboa park.

Mayan Stele
Samurai Armor

Mummies and self portrait.
Too many things to photograph. No flash allowed and I had to hustle to keep up with the kids. A very eclectic collection with some pretty interesting stuff. My wife was a party pooper and wouldn't let the kids and I go through the "Intruments of Torture" special exhibit.

The next morning we went to the Cabrillo National Monument. The site where Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to set foot on the West coast of the US. My photos here were a little lack luster. One interesting fact they mentioned was how all the early explorers except for Hernan Cortes died while on expedition.

A sub being pushed by tugs and Coronado Naval Air Station.

Chainmail and helm in the gift shop.

Next up was the San Diego Air & Space Museum.

This time we paid extra to see the Ripley's "Believe it or not" exhibit.

Model of a galley used in the movie Ben Hur.

Alien vs. Predator motorcycle.

And then the museum proper.

WWI room

Some nice scratch builds.

Cockpit of a WWII bomber.
Perhaps I should have shared more pictures of the planes here but it gets a bit overwhelming and we've all seen planes before. It was an interesting place.

We rounded out the day with a trip to the Aircraft carrier Midway.

Entrance on the starboard side.

Tower on the flight deck

Statue in a park of the Port side.

More carriers across the harbor.
I've been putting together this post over a number of days and I'm surprised at my photo choices here a little bit. Suffice it to say the thing is huge and stuffed full of aircraft from all of the eras during which it served. I seemed to be particularly enamored with the mess hall and the XO's office. We probably should have done this one earlier in the day or on a separate day. We steam rolled through it. It was also comparatively hot that day, though still in the mid 70's.

Finally on to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido. I think I had been here once in the 80's when you could drive through in your car. We went to the Zoo and then stayed at the Zoo overnight at their Roar and Snore. It was very cool.

White Rhinos

Giraffes

Golden Eagle

Young Gorilla and a female.

Big Daddy.
The previous photos were during the day around the park. We next went in to the campground and had dinner, followed by a tour of some of the exhibits where we got to go behind the scenes.

Sumatran Tiger

It is quite an experience to be stalked by a tiger who is three feet away.

The Elephants came over and played in the water for us.
Unfortunately most of my night shots were garbage. My hands aren't steady enough and flash was not always a viable option. The next morning however.

One of the Cheetahs

Lioness

Lion

Meerkat
So I would highly recommend the Roar and Snore. It appears I neglected to include the picture of the campsite, but it was fairly comfortable. They have large tents set up with 3" foam mats for bedding. You bring your own sleeping bag, pillows, etc. They even had showers there which were quite pleasant. I have no idea the cost, as everything was arranged by SWMBO. I think it is a definite stop if you made it all the way to San Diego.

To round out this very long post I'll bring your attention to some special boobs. If you are offended by such things do not proceed.

Sexy (Sexist) Miniatures debate.

Over at Old School Gamers on facebook there have been a few posts going up about the impracticality of boob armor.

Interestingly, to me anyway, the arguments all seem to run along the lines of the functional impracticality of said armor rather than the sexualisation/objectification of the female depicted.

You can check out the Tor.com article It’s Time to Retire “Boob Plate” Armor. Because It Would Kill You. here.

Now personally, as a sex starved adolescent, I grew up on a steady diet of fantasy art like this:

And of course this:

Not this:

Or this:

So I think that the female fantasy figures that were sculpted in the 80's and 90's were following this paradigm. As a dirty young man, who is now a dirty old man, it didn't particularly bother me or strike the "too unreal for fantasy" nerve. Although I have never been one to question fantasy, or sci-fi for that matter, too carefully. It is not in my nature to try and poke holes in an adventure or campaign, but just go with whatever the story entails.

But I digress. I think there are really two main questions. What is the way to sculpt a feminine figure without over sexualization, and what influence do women and girls have on the miniature market?

I'm not a sculptor or particularly talented artist, and as can be seen by my various posts showcasing boobs I'm pretty adolescent in my outlook about nekkid women but I do have an opinion on this.

First and foremost I have a strong opinion about fantasy. I don't demand it to be real. If it were realism I was looking for my rpg character would be a coopers apprentice trying not to die of exposure or malnutrition, not a Half-Orc Warrior with a giant axe running around beating ass.

In my fantasy I want to look like this:

Not this:

Sorry dude. Just trying to make a point.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I want my fantasy women to look a little bit like a Frazetta inspired wet dream. That being said, I think there are limits. I think for figures we need to be able to obviously see the difference between male and female. The most obvious way is for the female figures to have breasts. I suppose I could paint a vaguely unisex looking figure in shades of pink and say it is female, but that seems almost as bad as just having unrealistic boob armor.

Two women who I follow paint female figures very well and I hope that they might chime in and give their perspective. As a solo gamer I am doubly insulated from the women of the hobby and therefore don't have an inside view of the subject. The two women are Anne of O'Leary miniatures and Elaine from Atomic Floozy. They both are good painters Anne's style is perhaps more flirty, if you will, and Elaine is a gamer who tries to field all female forces. Tamsin of Wargaming Girl also comes to mind but I can't think of anything but male figures that she has done, being a hard core wargamer. I don't mean to call you ladies out you just happen to be women whose efforts I respect was curious what opinion, if any you had on the subject.

I've already gone on longer than intended so I'll try to wrap this up. The last thought is what I would like to use for gaming with my daughter. Personally I want to give her empowering role models, not sexpots. There's nothing wrong with being sexy but it can go too far. As an example lets look at some figures from Hasslefree of Kalee I came across today.

First:

From http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=kalee-%28b%29~hfh033&category=miniatures~fantasy-humans
It hits all the criticisms, boob armor, posterior hanging out but she looks bad ass to me.

Next Football Kalee:

From http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=football-kalee~hff001&category=miniatures~fantasy-football
Goes a little too far I think, lovely sculpt but I would not feel comfortable gaming with a young girl with this one.

Kalee again sans armor:

From http://www.hfminis.co.uk/shop?product=kalee~hfh017&category=miniatures~fantasy-humans

Pretty much the same vibe for me as the last one. I may be a hypocrite, but that's how I feel.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe we dudes need to get over the Sears underwear/ National Geographic mentality about our miniatures while still being able to acknowledge our fantasy art roots.

If you made it this far:

Let me know what you think.

Pimping some giveaways

Hi All,

Just pimping some more giveaways.

Back to the minis has. Blood Bowl Figs, Foundry Painting and Modelling Guide, GZG NAC starter Fleet, and now Two books. Good stuff. Put your name in the hat and boost his page views.

Also check out Hive Zero and his Epic Giveaway. Even if you don't want Epic space marines give him a bit of encouragement. There's nothing worse than having a giveaway that no one enters. Come on it's free stuff.

Welcome to John Yorio. You also don't have your blog listed in your links, but I know it is Table Top Diversions, a very nice solo, rpg and eclectic miniatures games blog.

And now, just to increase hits on this post and thereby hopefully drive traffic to the aforementioned giveaways lets talk about our favorite ladies dressed up as Princess Leia in the Jabba slave outfit.Shall we?

First off the original, Carrie Fisher.

Hard to beat the original.
 Next, Adrienne Curry.
I had no idea who she was.

Then Jennifer Aniston as Rachel from friends.

This one made an impression on me because of the comedy of her fulfilling Ross's geek fantasy. Admit it, it's yours as well.

And last but not least Olivia Munn. I do know who she is and I'd have to say she is my favorite.

And then for comic relief, an impromptu Jabba's lair scene.

Pure silliness

Okay, so what with the new Pope being named Francis and all, I couldn't resist.

Te Absolvo!
I will say that I never noticed that the Pope had such a bewildering array of hats.

Now to continue this is a bit of a non sequitur but is at least partially related to wargaming. If you follow Ross Mac over at Battle Game of the Month then you may have read about his adventures in plumbing. This next item, in addition to a colorful vocabulary, should be an essential part of every plumbers kit.

I suspect it works on Wargamers crack as well.
Perhaps this will be on the back of next years Posties rejects shirts?

And finally, I'm already worn out from all the "active" blogging I've been doing.

Boobs!
This thing with google reader will certainly make it more difficult.

I know there is a special place in hell for me. I'll save you a seat.

Boobs Aftermath - an independent peer review

The question on everyone's minds is does putting the word BOOBS liberally throughout your post increase traffic?

Here is the Data:

A breast like uptick in page views.
From the first picture you can see a pretty big bump. Yesterdays page views 211, today's already at 487. I'll have to investigate the TMP link as I don't normally notice a lot of traffic from there. Probably one reason my site languishes around the low page view numbers it normally has.

A decided uptick.
After crunching the numbers in a spread sheet I see that for the month of November I was averaging 39.75 views per day. Of course I neglected to establish a baseline but I suppose I could do that from the monthly totals. (Der!?)

After crunching the numbers I see that I was climbing from 14 hits per day at the beginning of the year to stabilizing at about 40 hits per day in July with an uptick to 50 in October. So thus far for the year I'm averaging 32 hits per day.

Onward and upward.
November was down slightly, but I think that was mostly due to not posting very much. Illness and Holiday travel I didn't have much to say.

So after all that I think I can say that 211 views yesterday and 487 views thus far today qualifies as a success in increasing traffic.

So:

Good Taste is Timeless indeed. I think I first heard this when it came out.

Welcome to:

Kris Marquardt, no blog listed in you Google friend profile. Let me know if you have one and I'll post a link.

Whisperin' Al. Same, I'll post a link if you've got one.

Thanks to all for viewing and I hope that actually having BOOBS in the post made it feel like less of a trick.

Boobs in gaming.

The other day Phil from The Wargaming Site was showing how his traffic had increased since switching to the Flipcard style for his blog. You can read about that here. In the comments Ray, of Don't Throw a One, suggested that adding the word BOOBS to a post was also a way to drive traffic to your site. Phil tried it here, and showed the results here. You know what? It works.

Now rather than just make another post and pepper it with the word BOOBS, I began musing on that elusive creature the female wargamer. Now I don't have any pictures of wargaming as such but I did stumble upon some pictures of women gaming on Boardgame Geek. I noticed that it had the tag "cute" so a little search later I had a few gems.

Now before you think that any old BOOBS made the cut, I did actually have some criteria. The BOOBS in question had to jump out at me, so to speak, from the thumbnail. No Pregnant women or kids in the picture. And if I had a feeling that the BOOBS in question might not quite be of age they didn't make the cut.

On to the Mammalian protruberances.

The Adventurers: Pyramid of Horus
This first picture got the ball rolling.

Aquaretto

Cylon (with some crack)
 These ladies look like fun.

Dominion

Mammoth Hunters
Aptly named but not my cup of tea.

Terra Prime
The caption for this one was "he looks distracted". The Mini Mouse outfit is a nice touch.

Zombies!!!
Had to include a picture of Zombies!!! I also like the mug with the chemical structure of caffeine on it on the pony wall in the back.

Well let's see if this has an effect on my hit rate, and hopefully people who are actually looking for BOOBS won't be too disappointed.

I did also wonder if you could get the same effect with PAMELA ANDERSON, or some ingenue du jour.
