No Sports - The Tour de France Concerts (1987)

This is probably No Sports' very first release. I would assume that it's a demo tape but the production quality is incredible. I think they may have had a demo tape before this and this is their first studio release. I can't say for sure. It's called the Tour de France Concerts but it is not a live recording. It was recorded in a studio in Germany.

I have a copy of the tape. The front cover is a sticker and the inlay card is hand-made written by an old type writer.

I mentioned before that my scanner is dying (at this time it's completely dead*) so these images are respectfully stolen from Discogs. The images from Discogs for this release are really well done so I tip my hat to the uploader and on my copy the sticker is trimmed off on the left side so I appreciate that the images on Discogs are not trimmed and they show the full sticker.

*Our friend Rikard mailed me some physical copies of some old skazines and I intend to scan each and every page from each and every 'zine but my scanner just wasn't in the mood.

Scanners were made with one purpose in life and that purpose is to scan things. But if you ask your scanner to scan things they get an attitude. I'm like "Hey scanner, can you scan this CD cover??" and my scanner is all "Umm..I dunno...I suppose I can try...maybe...like, can we just do this later?"

Anyhoo I just bought a new expensive scanner that I'm hooking up this weekend. I bought it for the sole purpose of scanning Rikard's 'zines. Let's see how it goes.

The Neighbors - Nuclear Family 7'' (1979)

This is a rare example of the ska influence in California in the late 70s. The A-side is a great female-fronted new wave/punk tune. The B-side is a ska-punk song that was way ahead of its time. Third wave ska punk from 1979? Awesome.

B - Punk in Paradise

Beanstalk - What You Gonna do When the Reggae Breaks Your Heart 7'' (1982)

Beanstalk was a new wave/reggae/ska band from South Africa who probably never released anything besides this one record.

The B-side is a self-written pop song with a reggae influence but the A-side is a 2 Tone style rendering of the Johnny Average Band's song from 1980

Very rare and awesome record. I have to thank Rude Rich for telling me about this record. I might have never known about it if it wasn't for him.

Housewife's Choice - Housewife's Choice 7" (1999)

This is a ska band from the 90s that focused on covering old tunes in a 2 Tone style. They were from Finland and all four tracks on this record are cover songs. I don't know that they ever recorded anything else.

A1 -  Can't Take My Eyes Off You (Frankie Valli - 1966)

A2 - What a World (Busty & Cool - 1962)

B1 - Fire (Bruce Springsteen - 1985)

The Shriners

The Shriners from Provo, Utah were sometimes called The Shriners of Ska. They played intense upbeat ska that appealed to fans of the 2 Tone sound as well as those who liked more of a third wave ska-punk style.

The Shriners of Ska LIVE! (1996)
1 Dancehall Ska
2 Metro North
3 Rise Up
4 Rude Bwoy on the Run

The Shriners - Finally Got a Cushman (1996)
1 Metro N
2 Rise Up
3 Dance Hall Ska
4 Juanitas
5 Barbara Mae
6 Rude Boy on the Run
*untitled live instrumental

All four songs on the tape are on the CD but the ones on the tape are live and the ones on the CD are studio versions. The spellings of some of the song titles vary between the two so I spelled them the way they are on each release.

Mr. Safety - The New Revolution Think 7" (1975)

This was ahead of its time.

Jason Conrad was a musician/actor in Britain in the early 70s who witnessed a child being killed by a car. He became an advocate for safety and toured Britain warning children about the dangers of automobiles. He did this through a live stage show and through music.

At one point Frankie Laine (He sang the theme to Rawhide and had a hit with Jezebel but, on  an unrelated personal note, one of my favorite songs is his version of "The Cry of the Wild Goose") invited him to America to do his safety lectures leading to him moving to Florida where he founded the Children's Safety Foundation inc.

Read more about Jason Conrad and the Safety campaign HERE.

The reason I think this is a notable post is because the B-Side sounds like it was an effort to pass this safety message through the ska pop-culture sound that was happening at the time except that it was five years ahead of the time. Listen to "The New Revolution Think". Doesn't it sound like it was pandering to kids who liked Madness? But this was from 4 years before 2Tone.

Like I said, ahead of its time.

A - Brown Rice (Long Grain Mix)
B1 - Brown Rice (7" version)
B2 - Pain-Killing Time

The Waltons was an incredibly talented band from Isle of Wight. I don't know if they every released anything but this and the 7" version but they did make lots of rehearsal and studio demos and live recordings which you can download from the band's own site HERE.

The Candy Ranch - Section 58 7" (1989)

This is an extremely rare record.

From the video:

"Section 58 was a piece of legislation regarding live music licensing and the song was written in defense of local music venue The Touchdown which was at risk of losing its license because of complaints about noise.

Kevin McGuire and Stevie Ryan - vocals
Gavin Bell - broomshank bass
Terry Ashley - percussive chairs
Dave Willingham - keys
Neil Forcer - guitar
special guests Mick Donnelly - tenor sax
and Trevor Ashley - alto kettle

Video made by Dave Emerson and Hartlepool 6th Form College students:
Kimberley Scholes
Amanda V Brown
Lynne Rodgers
Claire Rollo"

On the record sleeve it lists guitar player as "Nonkes" and sax player as "Flicks Monolouge".

My copy is signed by the band members and someone wrote: "Stevie R has now gone away."
I guess that explains why he wasn't in any of their other recordings.

I don't know how many releases they had after this but they did do a lot of studio recordings. This may be the only ska song though.

A - Section 58
AA - Screaming Nutter

Elite - You Don't Care About I (1983)

I say this a lot but this is one of those great singles from the 2 Tone era that really should be more well known. It was more popular in its day than a lot of the stuff I post but it has been all but completely forgotten. There are plenty of copies available and it usually goes for cheap but I can't find any evidence that it's ever been made available on line.

Verandahs - The Right Time 7" (1981) [LINK UPDATED Sunday September 3rd, 2017]

This was an Australian band and this is probably their only release.

The A-side is a great lost ska gem. The B-side has another slow ska tune with female vocals and another song that didn't really need to be there. The B-side was recorded so low that in order to hear it the volume had to be turned up so high the background hiss makes listening unbearable. At first I thought I was doing something wrong but I used three different needles and all three came out the same. The A-side came out pretty good and that's what's important.

Beat About The Bush - Undo 7" (1986)

This is a Swedish band and I don't know of anything else they've released. This is a double A-side and I just love the beat on the song "Undo" even though "The Galloping Gourmet" is more of an actual ska song, but it has all that weird shit at the beginning
I wasn't able to get a good rip of the other side and it skips in two places. I worked with it enough that I don't think you'll hear the second skip because it happens during an instrumental part but the first skip happens during the vocals and is quite noticeable. Someday I'll get another copy of this but this is for demonstration purposes only, right?

The Spots - Mr. Career 7'' (1980)

I first told you about the Spots in May 2016 when I posted the Skampler compilations HERE. I have since obtained a copy of the single so now I at least know what the b-side sounds like. It's not bad. It's not all that great either, but the a-side should be one of the most recognized songs from the 2 Tone era.
I'm doing my part, now it's up to you to spread it around.

The Mobsters - The Mobsters (cassette 1991)

The Mobsters was a Canadian band who released two cassettes in the early 90s before there was a third wave.
This is their first release. Six tracks of pure 2 Tone inspired ska.

I also have their second 4-track cassette from 1993 which I will post when I get a decent rip of it.

2 Rude Awakening
3 Miss Schiffer
4 Simone
5 Untitled
6 Ease Up the Pressure
