Scatterbrains - Do Best! (2000)

I made THIS POST in February 2023 for the band Scatterbrains from Switzerland and I mentioned that they had an EP that I do not have.

I have it now and this is that EP.

Sadly, there's no ska on it. Ska influence, but not real ska.

Oh well. If you have the other two albums you will want this to complete the collection.

1 I Can't Get No Sleep

2 Walking in the Sunshine

3 Jerk

4 Pretty Baby

5 Without You

Angrybeans

Angrybeans (Angry Beans on the first tape, Angrybeans almost everywhere else) was a punk band from Italy who played lots of ska. Their first release was mostly punk with just a couple of ska songs but their second release was seven ska songs and three punk songs. Unfortunately my copy of the first tape came out really good but my copy of the second one is pretty poor quality. The tapes are a bit weird. On the first one the shell is printed with the band name and track listing along with other standard lettering but you can tell there was something else printed on the shell which was later scraped off. It said "Fabrizio Giagoni" under the band name and above the track listing. The second tape is exactly the same but the track list has also been scraped off but it's easy to make out that it's the same track list from the first tape.

So these guys recorded over their first tape for their second tape. Sadly, though the sound quality of the second tape suffers because of it. And it looks like they had an alternate cover for it at some point.

By the time they recorded their album they reverted back to playing punk with just a couple ska songs and the lyrics are primarily in Italian.

They do have one other release which is an EP but all of the songs on the EP are on the album. The song "Baraonda Town" was on the second Italian Ska Invasion comp from 2002.

The Neighbors - Nuclear Family 7'' (1979)

This is a rare example of the ska influence in California in the late 70s. The A-side is a great female-fronted new wave/punk tune. The B-side is a ska-punk song that was way ahead of its time. Third wave ska punk from 1979? Awesome.

Man Without Future - Over Your Shoulder 7" (1986)

This band was from Basel, Switzerland. They played post-punk with a heavy ska influence. This is their only release but both of the recordings on this single appeared on a compilation called "What's Happening" which also has two other songs by Man Without Future, one of which is also a ska song.
I do have the cassette and I'll try and post it soon.

va Skintonic 7" (1992)

This is a compilation with two punk songs and two ska songs. I bought this thinking I had stumbled on a rare Ngobo Ngobo song called "Good for U, Man" but, as it turns out, it's the song "Good for Nothing Man" that was on their demo and their first album.
On a positive note, the Blechreiz song is a rarity that is unique to this release.

The Touch - Come Feel 7" (1983)

I have posted a lot of rare stuff on this blog over the years but this is definitely in the top 5 rarest things I've posted.

I think The Touch was from Texas but I'm not sure.

I have been looking for this record for a long time and I have heard that there are about three copies known to exist. The reality is that the band members probably each have crates of these records in their basements and that two years from now there will be 15 copies available on Discogs for $5 each. But I wasn't so lucky to score one for cheap. The copy I found is in amazing shape so I'm lucky for that, but the seller knew what he was selling.

I tell people that when they go to record conventions you need to go against your instinct. If you're looking for ska, go to the guys selling rap. If you're looking for punk, go to the guys selling country. Most vendors at conventions sell things outside of their scope of interest and they don't know the value of some of what they're selling but let me tell you...the guy who specializes in ska knows what he's selling and what it's worth. The guy who sold me this record...I respect him and hate him at the same time.

Rare doesn't always mean good, but in this case it does. This is one of the best rare records you'll ever hear.

A2 Don't Touch Me There
B1 Trouble on My Street
B2 Agent 109

6 Well Said

America's Favorite T.V. Family (1996)
1 Long Vacation

6 Push Me (non-album track)

Nigel Six was a punk band with a heavy ska influence from Connecticut. They released a demo tape and then these two recordings. The tape is more ska than the later offering.

Thanks to the Punk Guy YouTube channel who submitted the cassette for our approval. He has tons more punk and ska rarities on his channel.
If you have anything to do today I highly recommend that you DO NOT GO to his YouTube channel. It will hold you captive for a long time. The rest of your day's plans will become secondary.

Shack - Suburban Urban 7" (1983)

My copy doesn't have a cover so I stole this one from Discogs which seems to be the only image of the cover anywhere online. These guys were from New York and I think this is their only release. Collector's Frenzy states that this band has one of the members of the very short-lived New York band The Plague but I think they got that information from an eBay post and I'm not convinced that it's true. I welcome you to prove me wrong.

A - Suburban Urban
B - Give a Little

The Strikers - No Reason 7" (1981)

It's pretty hard to find a good copy of this record. It's a 7" but the cover is longer than it should be. My copy doesn't have a cover and the seller was honest enough to tell me that the record is warped and in terrible condition before I bought it. He was right - the record is trashed but I got it cheap so I at least know what it sounds like. This image is from Discogs. It's the only image I've ever seen of the cover.

The first song "No Reason" is so good that I am still looking for a decent copy just so I can hear it in better quality. I'm not into high quality sounds as you can tell from so many past offerings, but this rip really is pretty bad. The song "Knock it Down" is the worst. It's very crackly and skips in a couple of places but the song was released on a compilation from 1981 called Test Patterns that featured bands from St. Louis, Missouri (so we can guess that's where this band is from...) and I have included a CD version of the full album that includes another song by The Strikers called "Kick Around". It's not a ska song but there is a nice ska tune called  "Love 'N' Skank" by a band called The Felons.

A1 - No Reason
A2 - Original Crowd
B1 - Knock it Down

va Beat of the Street (1989)

There's a record store in Southern California called Dr. Strange Records that I have mined many gems from over the years. Many years back I came across this record in the back room (where all the good stuff is) but it had a price tag of $30.00 so I put it off for a few years. It has a rare song by The Loafers which was later featured on Skarities in 1990. I eventually stumbled across a copy for $2.00. This is that copy.

The Instigators are an amazing punk band from Dewsbury, England not to be confused with the ska/punk band from Auckland, NZ that I previously featured HERE.

There are only two records in this series and I have included a Frankensteined version of the first record which I know aren't the original versions but it's still good stuff.

A1 -  The Crack - My World
A2 - The Instigators - Cry Freedom
B1 - The Loafers - Feelings Right
B2 - Frantic Flintstones - Honey Maker

DOWNLOAD a vinyl rip of vol.2 (pictured) with an inaccurate version of vol.1

*Incidentally there was an American band also called the Instigators who only put out one single in 1985 and I absolutely love it. It's campy new wave with naive lyrics but it's brilliant. We Don't Know What We Want.
