Case of the Witch's Curse

Just like it wouldn't be Halloween without Frankenstein, monster masks, and Edgar Allan Poe (check out the previously themed posts featured here this month if you haven't already!), but it also wouldn't be Halloween without a spooky murder mystery set in a big haunted house on a hill! We've equally been looking at whack ass wicked Halloween witches throughout the month of October, and here comes one more! And okay, we've also called in Bentley of Scotland Yard a few freakin' times here already too, why, just this past summer even, (HERE) --but whoa Nelly, here he comes again already to help solve a centuries old death curse! So hang on tight to that burning, torturous flame wheel, cuz this one might leave you scratchin' your hollow noggins' while trying to name the killer before 'ol pipe puss Bentley can! Rhymed Invitations to Death!

You know what? Let's take a look at another Hangman story (see our previous post HERE too!) And if you're temporarily thrown off by the cute Mother Goose splash page, well, you shouldn't be, --because once this story gets going, 'ol Mama G literally becomes one of the creepiest Halloween-esque wicked witches in all of pre-code comicdom! Lots of great art and atmosphere, and some wildly violent moments in this one --plus! a couple of nice good girl moments courtesy of long-legged Thelma! But is The Hangman himself any more effective here than in our previous story? You'll just have to read it and find out for yourselves! From the August 1942 issue of Pep Comics #30, and with art possibly by Harry Lucey.

The Raven

It just wouldn't be October without an Edgar Allan Poe post, or in the very least, a Poe inspired tale of terror. So instead of giving you the same old beat of a Tell-Tale Heart, or yet another murder in some rue-ish morgue someplace sorrowful, let's flip open a few fun pages from the January 1943 issue of Pep Comics #35, where The Hangman (he's a super hero, by the way) tackles another bird brain bad guy who's seriously flown the coop! The dark, shadowy hospital setting is nicely realized by the ever bad ass illustrative mastery of Bob Fujitani, --there's just a lot of great action art and eerie faces, not to mention an absolute load of lurid thrills 'n chills! You've likely never seen Poe presented quite like this before here at THOIA, and fans of The Spirit, Dr. Drew, etc are sure to get a kick (and maybe a punch or two) outta this one! The Case of the Vampire Murders

Let us now open one last case file from the luridly lively, pulp-fisted, Bentley of Scotland Yard series from Pep Comics. And up to this point, all of the stories we've seen so far have been from the later Paul Reinman illustrated era... well now we're rollin' the clock way back for an even early entry, via the September 1940 issue of Pep Comics #8, where we find that the great Sam Cooper has taken over the art duties. Everyone seems to have enjoyed these posts, so don't be surprised if Bentley pays us another visit sometime before the summer's end. Stay tombed, lots more on the way!

A new month of macabre posts now begins, and we pick up where we left off back in June-- with more bloody 'n brutal Bentley of Scotland Yard cases directly from the crumbly 'ol crypt of crime! And this is a great 1942 double feature via Pep Comics #29 and #31 featuring some creepy cop crucifixion, -PLUS- a truly horrific church steeple impaling! Oooo that's gotta hurt! Can you solve both mysteries before Bentley himself reveals the terrifyin' truths? See for yourself! And each story features some of my absolute favorite Paul Reinman art ever, especially both of those jaw-dropping splash pages!
