How blurring an image works

Blurring an image softens all or part of it, to hide details or to draw attention to what stays sharp.

  • The whole image is selected at first; you can instead draw boxes over the areas to blur, choose soft blur, blur or pixelate, and set the strength.
  • The image is sent to our server, blurred in memory with the sharp image library and returned to your browser; it is not saved.

Free to use, with no account or sign-up. No watermark or logo is added to your result.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about blurring an image.

How do I blur an image?

Upload the image: the entire image is selected, with a live preview of the soft blur. Move the Strength slider, then click Blur image and download the result. To blur only part of the picture, click Clear all and drag on the image to draw a box over each area.

How do I blur a face in a photo?

Click Clear all, then drag a box over each face, up to 20 per image, and choose Pixelate, or Blur at a high strength. You can move, resize or delete each box before you download. You place each box yourself: nothing is selected for you.

What is the difference between soft blur, blur and pixelate?

Soft blur is a Gaussian blur of the pixels themselves: shapes and colors stay visible, which suits backgrounds and whole photos. Blur and Pixelate first reduce the area to blocks, which discards its detail, then smooth the blocks or keep them square.

Can a blurred face or text be recovered?

A soft blur at a low strength keeps much of the original information, so details can sometimes be recognized or partly recovered. To hide faces, license plates, names or numbers, use Pixelate, or Blur at a high strength, which replace the area with blocks. For highly sensitive data, crop it out of the image instead.

Can I blur the background of a photo?

Yes, with boxes: draw a box over each part of the background to soften, up to 20, and use Soft blur. The boxes are rectangles, so they cannot follow the outline of a person: the tool suits a side, a corner or a busy area, not a portrait-mode effect.

Which formats are supported, and are my images stored?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF and GIF images up to 10 MB; an animated GIF keeps only its first frame. The image is sent to our server, blurred in memory for this request and returned to your browser; the tool does not save it. EXIF metadata is removed unless you choose to keep it.
