How reducing an image to a size in KB works
Reducing an image to a size in KB compresses it until the file fits under a limit, such as 100 KB for an online form.
- The tool looks for the highest JPEG or WebP quality that fits, and scales the image down only if that is not enough; the result never exceeds your target.
- Metadata is removed and the photo is turned the right way up.
- The image is sent to our server, compressed in memory with the sharp image library and returned to your browser; it is not saved.
Free to use, with no account or sign-up. No watermark or logo is added to your result.

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about compressing an image to a target size in KB.
How do I reduce an image to a specific size in KB?
Upload the image, choose 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB or type a size from 5 to 5,000 KB, pick JPEG or WebP, then start. The tool finds the best quality that fits and shows the final size, quality and dimensions.
Will the file really be under my limit?
Yes. The result is never larger than the target. The tool counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, so a 100 KB result is at most 100,000 bytes and fits a 100 KB limit whether a site counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.
How does it reach the target size?
It searches for the highest JPEG or WebP quality, between 95 and 40, whose file fits. If even quality 40 is too large, it scales the image down step by step, keeping its proportions, and searches again.
How do I compress an image to 100 KB, 50 KB or 20 KB?
Click the 100, 50 or 20 KB preset. The smaller the target, the more likely the image must be scaled down to fit: the result shows its dimensions next to the original ones, so you can see what changed.
What if the target size cannot be reached?
If the image would need to be smaller than 16 pixels on a side, the tool stops and asks for a larger target rather than going over it. A file already in the chosen format and under the target is returned as it is.
Which formats are supported?
You can upload JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, TIFF and GIF images up to 10 MB. The image is sent to our server, compressed and returned to you; the tool does not save it. The result is a JPEG or WebP file without metadata, with the photo turned the right way up.
