Ice Planet Clones #1

R'jaal's Resonance

Rate this book
R'jaal has waited many turns of the seasons for his khui to resonate, only to be disappointed time and time again. But when he is taken captive by strange beings hiding in the very tunnels of the fruit caves, he wakes up to find himself in a strange underground cage.

Also in the cage? A very pretty unfamiliar human female. She says her name is Rosalind. She makes his khui sing.

It's finally his time.

There's a big problem, though -- Rosalind has no khui of her own. And if she doesn't get one soon, she could die.

LISTEN I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR R'JAAL'S BOOK FOR EONS.

(Not really, because Ruby is a romance machine and delivers good food at a steady basis, but I digress.)

From the moment we met R'Jaal on the island and saw him making sad eyes because Marisol didn't resonate to him—I knew I was not going to get any rest until I saw him get happiness. It was a long wait, but boy was it worth it. Rosalind was everything R'Jaal needed, and R'Jaal is the definition of "it's always the quiet ones". (THANK GOD.) There was that staple translation error human between sweet baby R'Jaal and Rosalind (poor babies will just never understand slang) and the romance that blossomed between them was so sweet and scorching hot.

Outside of the main couple, I love how well Ruby balanced the transition of one series to another while not letting the new details overshadow the couple at hand! There were so many new things to get excited about for the future that we saw in this book, but it never took away from the sweet, sweet satisfaction of finally seeing precious baby R'Jaal (with a surprisingly dirty mouth (praise, Ruby)) get his happily ever after.

I just want to read this universe until I die, okay?

It's all coming together macro-plot wise, and I love it! So many interesting threads brought together in this, and so many possibilities opening up... also loved seeing R'jaal finally get his HEA

Not a real girl!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙💖
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 😄😮🙂🥰
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Duet Narration

The heroine: Rosalind - she wakes up thinking she was buried alive, inside a coffin. She is able to open it and finds herself in some type of pod in the middle of winter. She doesn’t know how she got there or where she is. She is wearing a white slip dress and a watch of some kind, though she doesn’t wear a watch. She sees a massive beast carrying a woman away and other pods around her. She is a fanfic writer and has never written anything so crazy. She runs to a nearby cliff with some greenery and goes up to see if there is a cave. She finds a cave and is captured by something.

The Hero: R’jaal - he is the only unmated male in his tribe on the beach. He has waited a long time for his Khui to resonate and has been hanging out with the only unmated female Tia, but nothing has been going on there. He travels with Tia and a few others to the fruit cave, where they are trying to figure out the mystery of where all the fruit has gone. R’jaal is taken hostage by some beings that have been living in the underground tunnels on the planet.

The Story: R’jaal and Rosalind end up in the same jail cell being held by some aliens with fur and four arms. R’jaal says they are ancestors. R’jaal immediately starts to resonate for Rosalind but she doesn’t have a Khui so she can’t resonate and will get sick and die without one. She is also very cold all the time because the Khui (symbiont) is what keeps them warm on the ice planet. One of their jailers seems intelligent though the other just looks at Rosalind with lust and he doesn’t care that she is R’jaal’s female, and he is resonating to her.

This is the first book in a new Ice Planet Barbarians spinoff called Ice Planet Clones. I was excited to get some new Ice Planet Stories. Though I do hope that Ruby Dixon does more series about space pirates or other kinds of aliens that travel out in space. I’m a bit over the barbarian themes, since the people live like people on Earth did thousands of years ago. I want future technology and exciting space adventures. So many alien romance books are about barbarian types. Though definitely Ruby was the leader of that trend.

The story was pretty good. I liked the addition of the beings in the tunnels. Like usual, the world building and character development was good. Rosalind was kind of a whiner, especially after she finds out she is a clone and not a ‘real person’ as they said in the book. Just when I kept thinking she got over it, she would fall into another depression or have a nightmare about not being real.

This audiobook was told in dual points of view via duet narration and was narrated by Mason Lloyd and Hollie Jackson who did most of the Ice Planet Barbarians series. I grew to really like both of these narrators. I love the way Mason Lloyd has a kind of stilted voice for the alien men, it sounds very authentic. Hollie Jackson is great at showing emotion through her voice and I really enjoyed this as well.

R’jaal finally gets a girl

Our sweet boy has waiting so long and finds himself imprisoned with Rosalind. Their story involves him withholding truths but being utterly devoted, her being confused, hurt, and/or stressed most of the time. That tracks for someone waking up on not-Hoth.
I would have loved the chance to learn more about R’jaal and what drives him that wasn’t already alluded to in previous books. This book was mostly centered on Rosalind’s struggles and her adjusting to life.
I’m excited about the newly introduced characters. NGL, I’m really hoping Skarr gets a book soon. I gotta know what villainy is really inside him. Also, this was the first time I’ve been even vaguely interested in Tia.

Spice: 3-4 scenes

Triggers: Ruby has a more comprehensive list that I can make at the front of the book

Honestly coulda been a 4 ⭐️ but I just think Ruby Dixon did her heroine a disservice with the fanfic writer thing. In the authors notes she says it’s a nod to her friend who reads and writes fanfiction, which makes sense, because no one in the fanfiction realm would talk about it like this heroine did. Any time fanfiction came up the dialogue got clunky, and it ultimately did nothing for the plot. I like how often times each heroine will introduce a new technology to the planet, like Bridget with pottery. And our heroine in this book, Rosalind, starts to introduce paper and the written word. Which makes sense of course, but the character is also a librarian. So she could have just… been a librarian.

But besides that glaring issue, I liked the couple. Our hero has been waiting for his time to shine for a loooooong time and it was nice to see him happy.

“R’jaal’s Resonance” by Ruby Dixon

5⭐️/5⭐️
3🌶/5🌶

“He smiles at me as if this is all he’s ever wanted, and he’s so handsome and affectionate that I wonder what’s wrong with the women here that they weren’t climbing him the moment he opened his mouth.”

Immediately following the events of “Flor’s Fiasco”, R’jaal finds himself imprisoned in a strange cell. Underground and isolated from his tribe, R’jaal must find a way out. His situation is further complicated by his cellmate, Rosalind. Rosalind does not have a khui, and R’jaal has just resonated with her. Can Rosalind and R’jaal escape their prison before she succumbs to the toxic atmosphere of the planet?

-I know I’m a little vague with the description above, but I truly don’t want to spoil any aspect of the plot; it’s a wild ride from start to finish.

-I’m totally elated I get to experience a new Ruby Dixon series in the “Ice Planet Barbarians” universe! I binged all the IPB books at the end of 2021 and going into 2022, then promptly moved on to the adjacent “Ice Home” series. Both series have such a special place in my heart; they’re my number one comfort reads. Reading about Not-Hoth in new Ruby Dixon books feels like returning home (even though I’d never survive in such a harsh environment).

-While I’m up-to-date on all the IPB and IH books, I haven’t read the “Corsairs Brothers” series. I follow Ruby on Facebook and knew about “Corsairs: Mathiras” being continually updated, and I also knew the ending of the book would play a significant role in R’jaal’s book. I’m happy to report you do NOT need to read any of the “Corsairs Brothers” books in order to understand the events of R’jaal’s book; however, you definitely need to read all the books in IPB and IH.

-For the longest time I had a theory R’jaal and Tia would get together, so when they were the last two left to not resonate I felt so smug. But then the huge twist ending to Flor’s book happened and…now I don’t feel so smug. Yet, I’m so happy with Rosalind, she’s the perfect mate for R’jaal.

-Out of all the FMCs Ruby has written in this universe, Rosalind might be the most relatable. I remember having a conversation with some friends years ago, when I was still studying for my master’s degree in library science, and we were all deciding what our ‘job’ would be during an apocalypse setting. And when it was my turn, I was like “well…I could organize whatever books aren’t destroyed”. So when Rosalind was trying to figure out her role in the tribe, it felt like an internal conversation I would be having with myself. I also really appreciate reading about librarianship as an information science field, and not just about shelving and checking out books. Librarians help users find and disseminate information, they make information freely available to everyone. I love that the tribe quickly realizes they need a way to preserve their history, and who better to figure out a solution than Rosalind.

-R’jaal skyrocketed to my top five favorite Barbarian/alien boyfriends (Zolaya, Warrek, Rukh, Ashtar are the top four). I loved getting to know him on a deeper level. In past books he’s very emotionally closed off due to his leadership; he presents a very strong public persona, but when you read his POV you understand how lonely he is. Like most Barbarians, R’jaal is respectful, patient, and understanding. However, he goes above and beyond most Barbarians with his emotional intelligence. The Barbarians are quite emotionally intelligent and in-tuned with their human mates, but R’jaal takes it a step further with Rosalind. Rosalind experiences an intense identity crisis (not going to say what it is due to spoilers), but R’jaal handles her anxiety and depression flawlessly. This man is a textbook definition of ‘supportive partner’ in literally every category. I struggle to think of a flaw, but I suppose R’jaal’s only flaw is how he withholds the truth about khuis and resonance from Rosalind.

-The smut was incredible. I don’t know how Ruby is able to write such unique smut about the same alien species that has the same type of anatomy, but every single time it’s a unique experience as a reader. R’jaal utters some of my absolute favorite type of dialogue by a MMC during sex; another reason to love him above other Barbarians. The first time R’jaal and Rosalind have sex is going to live rent free in my mind for a long time.

-This is the perfect start to a series, it does an excellent job referencing past characters and events, while also setting up some interesting storylines. I started the book with a set of questions, and ended the book with even more, and I’m so excited to read further and learn their answers.

Loved it! I’ve been waiting for this MMC to get a mate for what seems like forever and this book didn’t let me down. This book was a great opener for the new IPB series. I’m excited about the doors that were opened in the last Icehome book that were explored a little in this one. I was hesitant about the storyline, but this book definitely pulled it off and left me extremely intrigued.

I’m also loving that Ruby opened the door for not so nice people living on the planet. For years the only enemies were from outer space and now we get something a little different with actual not so nice aliens from the planet being introduced. I love it! I can’t wait for the next book. I really hope it’s Tia or the couple that went missing!

I really liked this new series starter with some familiar faces and settings, but with some newness thrown in as well. This does standalone and Ruby Dixon does have an author note at the beginning to summarize what's happened prior to this series (briefly) since this is a spinoff of Icehome which is a spinoff of Ice Planet Barbarians. There's also a cast of characters at the end of the book with descriptions and relationship connections. I've only read 1 IPB and a couple of the Icehome books and I did think that helped, only because there's a large set of side characters mentioned who've been in the two prior series. But the plot of the book and the challenges for the characters are developed well starting with this book and setting up for the rest of the series.

I'm going to be vague to avoid spoilers. The story starts with Rosalind (h) waking up in a pod and being very confused and scared and then grabbed by an unseen stranger to be tossed in a cell. She has such a rough intro to the planet and its people, unfortunately. But, she's quickly joined by a giant alien in that cell. I loved R'jaal (H), he's a big sweetheart who felt like he was out of options for finding his mate and that he'd be forced to be alone or to take the only remaining single female, who he felt no connection with. He was investigating a cave with others when he's kidnapped and thrown into this cell, but his reaction is very different than Rosalind's because he starts resonating so is joyful and is immediately ready to do anything, *anything*, for his mate. But Rosalind has no idea what's going on, she's in danger (without knowing it) because she doesn't have the nifty lifeform that helps the planet's inhabitants live there, and their captors think she's cursed so won't just release her. They have to get out and get back to R'jaal's village, not easily done. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow drama, tiny om drama from a creep who takes a liking to h, but with no interest on her end. H is a virgin who waited for his mate and h sort of is and sort of not (spoilers).

I really enjoyed how this book balanced the discoveries of who else is on the planet and what that could mean with the relationship development between Rosalind and R'jaal. Of course, R'jaal is all that is devoted and protective (seriously, I loved him), but he also doesn't want to overwhelm her so he does keep some facts to himself. I also liked that while Rosalind is drawn to R'jaal, she questions that draw and is cautious, even though she feels she can trust him. She was a great character with a mix of resiliency, vulnerability, and some humor. Some of the details of Rosalind's personality and memories made for excellent scenes too. Some steaminess starts fairly early, but the full relationship takes some time, and of course eventually all the info that R'jaal was trying not to overwhelm Rosalind with comes out, along with some new info. A lot happens in this book, but it's also a sweet and steamy romance between the h and H.

Once they're back with R'jaal's village, all the puzzle pieces also don't magically fall into place. Adjustments have to be made and as supportive as R'jaal is, Rosalind goes through significant emotional turmoil. I appreciated that there wasn't a magic fix for this and it took some processing and effort. The story ends with a HFN/HEA of these two in love and happily established and with breadcrumbs for future characters' stories to be told, along with breadcrumbs for future challenges/conflict. I thought this was a great read and I am curious about some of the new characters and potential. Risdaverse is still my favorite though.

I have read every one of Ruby Dixon’s Ice World Series books and her dragon books. She is fantastic at world building and my favorite part is how she writes her male lead characters. Instead of being people that sleep with everyone, most are innocent and wait for their resonance mate. They are also all extremely loving to their human mates who much of the time don’t make sense to them - speaking in English slang, etc.

However, I have started to notice a trend as this series progresses that is going to end with me no longer reading these books.

Ruby has become more about making diverse-looking characters, and not diverse-thinking characters. She forces in character traits or ideas that just don’t make sense with the story or the character. Spoilers ahead…

Rosalind lands on the ice planet in an escape pod. She wakes up without knowing much of anything. She sees something that scares her so she runs off into the icy wilderness practically naked. Now, most people in this situation would be thinking about survival - where am I going? What did I see? How am I going to survive? What does Rosalind think about? Her fanfiction - where she goes into great detail about writing about Kirk and Spock from Star Trek having sex and somehow making babies. Yes - that is what she is thinking about.

Her disturbing fanfiction is all she thinks about - to a nauseating degree. Ruby wants you to know only one thing about this character - she writes fanfiction. There is nothing else you need to know because Ruby says so. There’s is nothing deeper - don’t even try to look.

Now Rosalind is imprisoned with R’jaal who she soon finds out is a friend and trying to keep her safe. He is obviously from a primitive planet - discernible by his clothes and speech. So instead of making conversation that he would relate to and understand, she continues to talk about what? You guessed it - her fanfiction. Something he doesn’t know anything about. Then when she sees his spur she asks, “Can you make a man pregnant with it?” Really? Is R’jaal going to think this makes sense?

And yet R’jaal continues to think her ‘clever’. How do we know Rosiland is clever? Does she make an escape attempt or try to construct a weapon or tool? No - we know she is clever because Ruby has R’jaal say she is clever over and over. She is clever because Ruby is telling you she is clever.

The constant need to insert Rosiland talking about her fanfiction, or her fantasies of ‘Riddick topping Kirk and making him keep quiet’ pulls you from the story instantly. How is this pertinent to the story? It’s not. Rosalind is so sick and on the verge of dying without the khui - but she can’t be troubled with survival - no, she wants to relive her fanfiction porn. At some point you would think her survival instinct would kick in. Unfortunately that really doesn’t happen. She is saved by others with common sense.

I went back to the front of the book to read the ‘trigger warnings’ - which I usually ignore since I don’t want spoilers. The most tame items are warned against, such as ‘food tampering’, but there is no mention that this book features constant themes of men getting pregnant by other men and having babies.

This series are supposed to be an escape - it was not. I think it has come to it’s natural end. The first ones were great - my favorite to read, but now that Ruby is going away from her core audience to fringe ideas I think this will be the last one.

Watch my dedicated reading vlog to know my thoughts about this book!: (will be linked here when posted)

MEMORABLE QUOTES:
"You are here because you are mine" (p.25)
"'Why are you being so nice to me?'
'Because we are in this together.'
Because you are min and I have waited forever for you." (p.36)
"I have waited seasons and seasons for you...And you were worth every lonely night. Look at how beautiful you are in my arms, how good I make you feel. Your body knows that you are mine. Your heart knows you are mine." (p.126)
“I thought I would always be alone, my R’slind. Season after season has passed with no resonance, and I worried it would never happen for me. Now that you are here, I see that I was simply waiting for the perfect female. And now you are here.” (p.130)
“You are perfect,” he murmurs. “I would change nothing about you. Seeing your face for the first time made it worth all of the waiting.” (p.199)

J’attends toujours mon reverse 🥰

2,5ish. But not quite "liked it".

What was good:

Tia finally wasn't grating.
The new characters seem fun and diverse.
R'Jaal stops being the mopey side character who can't find a gf

What I didn't like:

The dynamic: R'Jaal had no personality beyond his neediness with Rosalind.
Rosalind was a clone, but she went on and on about her obsessive love for fanfiction, especially Spock and Kirk?? There were mentions of mpreg too. It was tiresome and detracted focus away from the story and characters.

The first book in the ‘Ice Planet Clones’ series follows R’jaal and his mate Rosalind. He waited so long to hear his khui sing and we waited patiently with him. But this new series doesn’t only bring new humans and ‘taters’ to the group, we also get a glimpse at another group, the ancestors, and how they lived on Not-Hoth the whole time, seemingly unnoticed by the Sa-Khui.

As main characters I liked R’Jaal and Rosalind, even though after a while Rosalind got on my nerves. She struggles a lot with the thought of being a clone and thinks therefore she isn’t human enough to be someone’s mate and at first I understood her, but after some time and the same thoughts over and over I was irritated. R’Jaal was great though, he knew how to handle humans and didn’t push his resonance on Rosalind and let her come to terms with the whole thing.

In this book we also get to see a different side of T’ia. She seemed much more mature in this book than in the previous one and this character growth fit much more to her personality, than her still being a bitch after so many years on that planet. I’m glad that Ruby decided to give T’ia a little more room to grow.

It’s no secret that I love these books and that I enjoy reading them. I can’t believe I’ve finally caught up with them, though, and now have to wait for a new one like everyone else. But I am super excited to get my hands on the next book.

I am so happy that R'jaal finally got a mate, but I didn't really like Rosalind. She reminded me so much of myself and reality has no place in my fantasies. She acted like I probably would having been put on an ice planet. On top of that she loves books and is an introvert. All she's missing is some anxiety and ADHD. But having said that, I do love the differences ruby puts in her books. No one character is the same.

end of Flor's Fiasco - Niri just dropped her cargo of clones/ragamuffins onto Not-Hoth (this time even a human male).

~5 gladiators, incl one human male; 10 females. 3 empty pods - Rosalind saw a "monster" carrying a woman away

"Ancestors" tribe live underground. 2 helped R escape; moved to beach; have no language implant

R’jaal and Rosalind’s story! Man, he had been waiting so long for resonance to happen! Luckily for him (and us) he didn’t resonate to Tia and instead he did to a newcomer that we find out is a clone! We get a lot of new people added to the Icehome tribe with this book… including some ancestors! I like that she is a curvier woman and is more of an introvert that enjoys books (she has librarian past memories). Overall, great start to this spin-off of the spin-off series. Love my Ice Planet Barbarians! Can’t believe I’m all caught up now!

What a way to introduce more characters!!!

These big, blue, himbos have had me in a chokehold since I read IPB over a year ago. And I only read THAT because someone wrote a Reylo fanfiction inspired by IPB!!! A few dozen books later, I'm still here, and still in love with these characters!!!

I am so excited about the introduction of the "ancestors". Ruby's been dropping hints FOREVER, and I can't wait to learn more about these furballs!

While Rosalind's character didn't resonate (HA) with me, she brought in the unique dynamic of the clones. We met some of them in the Corsairs series, with Ruth and Ruthie, and I think that they will add a unique experience to the tribes on Not-Hoth. Right now, they feel a little bit like resonance-fodder, but I'm sure their stories will add plenty of twists and turns (especially the male clones).

I'm so happy R'jaal got his mate! He's the best man-wife ever.

it might be because i have high expectations for anything Ruby Dixon writes, but this book was a meh for me. I liked R'jaal and appreciated his respect for Rosalind, but nothing swoony when compared to other heroes we've been introduced to in the Ice Planet Barbarians universe. He just did not stand out in any way, like we get it you're the last guy to resonate but everyone kind of struggles with that before meeting their mate so I just could not bring myself to care that much for his plight.
Rosalind was kind of obnoxious to me, and super one dimensional. This might be unfair as she is ***spoiler ahead*** a clone, but I could not really bring myself to care about her problems either lol. Her major existential crisis in the last part of the book was also super boring, and I just could not understand why she was so mad about being a clone.
Overall, an average read compared to the other books in her previous series but I am excited to see how she expands on the universe!!!

4.5 stars! R’jaal’s Resonance is the first book in the new Ruby Dixon series, Ice Planet Clones, and when I saw it recently got an audiobook (on hoopla and Libby too), well I had to jump in!

This one will definitely make more sense, and you’ll have more fun with the familiar world and all the characters popping up, if you’ve read both the IPB and Ice Home series already. Especially Ice Home since we see almost all of those characters make appearances/be talked about.

In this one Rosalind wakes up in a pod realizing she’s now on the ice planet and she’s very confused and freaked out. Shortly after, she ends up trapped/being held in a cave, but she has R’jaal with her! R’jaal can’t believe his luck has finally arrived when he resonates with Rosalind, if you’ve seen his appearances in the other series then you know he’s been wanting his own resonance and mate. But Rosalind is very confused about her own life and memories, let alone trying to figure out where she is and what’s going on.

The forced proximity in this one was so fun. R’jaal is very sweet and patient with her and kind of slowly eases her into the world, she knows nothing of resonance or khui or Not Hoth. He’s desperate to get his mate help and get back to his village. I liked how she talks often about being a librarian and a fanfic writer and compares that to her current situations often! Excited for this new spinoff series and to get to the 2nd book which is out too!

YEEEEEEES, FINALLY, the sweetest, most romantic alien on not hoth gets his story.

JUSTICE. FOR. R’JAAL.

i don’t know if i’ll ever forgive ruby for making this poor, sweet, desperate-for-love alien wait years to find his true love, while watching his clan brothers, neighbors, and tribe all fall in love, one after the other. ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL. we couldn’t have let that particular agony go to m’tok? or a’tam?

this was a HELL of a spin-off series start, you guys.
NEW. ICE. PLANET. LORE. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

everything i thought i knew about this planet has been shifted on its axis, with a buuuuunch of new characters — that you’ll recognize if you read the corsair brothers series first, particularly mathiras' book, which i have yet to finish…oops.

i can’t wait to see where this series goes, because the potential is HUGE. i need so, so much more information.

this is a 5 star book in the rubyverse, absolutely, but capping it at 4 here because it’s not necessarily 5 stars in the broader literary universe, ya know?

i know the next book is likely tia’s, which i’m excited about, but o ruby dixon, here my prayers, and give me skarr’s book SOON.

This story follows R’jaal and Rosalind and it’s everything you’d expect from these books. What irked me were all the side characters. It felt like an introduction to this world. So many aliens, clones, humans, babies even a dragon and scale people/aliens. The babies were cute, I always want babies in the story! I just wanted more of the main couple. I also felt like the story didn’t have a full ending. What happened to the evil jailer and the underground people chasing them? Maybe they will show up again later. They were just forgotten. Literally, not mentioned at all again.

2.5 Estrellas!
