The writing style, the characters, the story, everything felt just right.
It can be easily finished in one sitting. The premise was interesting and Lee certainly delivered. By the last page, I found myself wanting more of the characters. The ending was bittersweet and again, very suitable for the story line.
I highly enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it to all fantasy fans. It's not the most complex. The characters don't necessarily stand out. However, it gives these magical vibes that transport you to another place at another time. ...more

It was a fun story, the wedding of Georgia and Billy, the werewolves couple. I assumed that those short stories are told by side characters/completely unrelated to the characters that we know and certainly not from Dresden’s perspective. I’m glad they are all that.
But I probably should take a break (been trying to catch up with all the short stories) because some things are becoming repetitive, like the height of Harry. Since they’re completely justified, a short break is best....more

First, let me start by saying I love the cover, it's gorgeous.
This will be a short review since this is a short book.
At 208 pages, this novella is important to the Skyward world. I believe it's necessary to read the sequel, Cytonic. It's the first of two novellas, the second to be released towards the end of October. We follow FM in the events that develop after Starsight on Detritus while they try to discover how to make the slugs hyperjump and rescue Spensa's friend, Cuna. The second will be about Alanik, an alien we met in Starsight and again in this novella.
Sunreach is a fast-paced novella and I consider it an entertaining read. While I wasn't had a bit of a difficult time liking it at first, Once I passed the 15% I finished it in one sitting. My memory of the events of Starsight is pretty bad. Now that I think of it, I should've looked up a summary to read. Luckily, the more I read, the more I had a better understanding of what's going on even with my vague recollection of the previous book. I believe it was difficult to get into at first because I was trying to remember who's whom and what the heck are the slugs used for.
I highly enjoyed the slug training part and how they tried to discover their abilities. It was very fun to read and the slugs were super cute. Is FM an interesting character? While I like her well enough, she didn't stand out for me. It seems like she was the most interesting secondary character to write about more than the need for her specifically. But she's a quick thinker and proved herself to be useful beyond her skills as a pilot. This novella also gives us more insight into some secondary characters' lives and personalities.
On the other hand, this novella had too much angst and leaned heavily on the "young" part of YA. I'm not sure if I'm going to lower my rating to 3 stars. I didn't feel the romance, it was a bit too cheesy for my taste. At first, it was cute but then, not sure what happened it became too much saccharine. It was too teenage-y. This definitely didn't feel like Sanderson.
Nonetheless, I believe Janci Patterson did a good job co-writing this novella. The writing differs from Sanderson's but beyond the issue I mentioned above, I can't but say that it was well-written.
Also, definitely read it before Cytonic, no question about that....more

I really enjoyed this novella! I read it in one sitting and I think it was an improvement from the first instalment. Reading about the multiple aspects is interesting and the whole story had a nice mystery addition, which I found believable (view spoiler)[as a Greek Orthodox myself, I was surprised how the mother will be okay with cremation knowing she’s deeply religious, so it was nice that it was her all along! (hide spoiler)] Sanderson never disappoints in delivering solid stories at the very least. Sure this is not as complex as his usual novels, but it’s an entertaining & quick read with likeable main character and intriguing concept.
I’m looking forward to reading the last novella, although I’ve read that it’s nowhere as good as the first two, but I’m curious about how Sanderson plans to wrap up the story, especially Sandra’s plotline. He’s such an accomplished writer, writing good stories across multiple genres. Not many can pull that off. (Yes I can’t but praise the guy every chance I get.)
PS: I’m not sure why Brandon Sanderson didn’t do more research to know that Christian Orthodox use the term “icons” and not paintings when describing even if “a painting” of a Saint/Christ/Virgin Mary/etc (for theology reasons). I assumed it’s common knowledge (the term).. also one Stephen’s aspects knows about the religion a bit. But that’s my only comment....more

I have mentioned several times in my reviews that I have a difficult time reading fantasy audiobooks. I was hesitant to listen to this audiobook -although I knew it was made to be an audiobook- but figured since it’s a short book, I’ll try. Luckily, I didn’t have any difficulties listening to this audiobook. I also feel stupid because I’ve listened to many books now narrated by Julia Whelan and while before the voice was vaguely familiar, it was only this audiobook I know this narrator (sadly, I don’t remember their names). And to my surprise, this is my 5th audiobook by her. She’s a very talented narrator indeed and definitely made it to my favorites (not that I have a list).
The book is a sci-fi mystery combination. It tells the story of a clone in a futuristic world where people can set a theme and experience whatever they wish to. She was created to hunt down her “original” for killing her husband. Their husband. If she fails, she’ll die.
The Original had a top-notch world-building for a short book, like always for Brandon Sanderson. It also focused a lot on what Holly was feeling and going through. Although understandable since she’s an edited copy of her original, it got a bit too much.
The book is told from the 1st perspective and is fast-paced. I admit though that some descriptions were kind of too much. It’s not my favorite book by Sanderson by far nor I felt attached to the characters like I usually do.
The Original is not perfect by any means. Nonetheless, Brandon Sanderson and Mary Kowal wrote an enjoyable novella that can be finished in a few hours (less if reading). The book also had some nice sound effects although they were higher than the narrator's voice a few times.I’d recommend the audio if you’re an audiobook fan and want to listen to a fun short story.

I was excited to read this novella having enjoyed Unwind immensely. I wanted to know what happened to Lev and the Hi-Rez idea sounded very interesting...
You see, the ebook I had was over 100 pages. I didn't know it featured other things too. I was very bored. I should've finished it in one sitting but I honestly never felt like reading it. And I still had 50% left of the book, you know?
So I was trying to read a bit more yesterday.. all while hoping for something to happen. And indeed, an unexpected event occurred. I read the next chapter (which is only a few pages) and the novella IS OVER. I felt underwhelmed, to say the least. All this time I kept waiting for it to get more enjoyable but was thinking maybe because we're still halfway through but no. THAT WAS IT.
Sadly, that doesn't make giving this book 2 stars any easier because I really liked the characters. I also liked the idea of People of Chance and that we had Native American characters. I also loved Wil and his grandpa. Unfortunately, when the book is too short to create a bond with the characters strong enough to enjoy the story when the story slows, it has to rely on the pace. Hence, my feelings toward the character remained superficial and I was simply uninterested.
Now that I think of it, the general atmosphere of the story was too calming and serene? Maybe that was why I didn't enjoy it much. After reading Unwind I was expecting more brutality but this book was the total opposite -ha ha you can guess why things got interesting at the end.
Briefly, I liked the idea of the hosts of this novella (NA who are against Unwinding and thriving on their own), I also liked the characters. But the general vibes and sound of the story bored me so damn much. Thank God the chapters were very short....more

Absolutely brilliant and very compelling!! How can a favorite author become even more favorite? I knew this novella will be good just not that good. I’m pretty sure now once I read Stormlight (hopefully this summer) Brandon Sanderson will become *the* favorite author.
This is without a doubt the best short story I've read in my life. Sanderson proves he's yet again a master at characterization and through this book, we get a glimpse of how he also thinks when writing his characters. It's also a standalone and romance free which was nice. Although part of the Cosmere, it can be easily read if you're new to this world too since it's not related to any of his other books.
I've read a few novellas by Brandon Sanderson and it's nice to see how he's evolved in writing those too. I might raise my rating to 5 stars later.. the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars although objectively it deserves it, is that I'm in a not a book slump (I'm reading just fine) but I'm finding it difficult to love books like I used to....more
