I am not sure. All I know is that other than IA books in the last few years, I haven't been truly enjoying any female-led UF.
Slouch Witch started interesting enough. What made picking up this book is that the main lead is unconventional, which was refreshing. Ivy is witty and intelligent. She does things the smart way instead of using common time consuming methods. Unfortunately, I got tired quickly of this attitude because she was just that. Lazy smart witch. Her character wasn't explored enough for me.
On the other hand, the mystery plot was kind of boring, I wasn't invested in it from the start nor cared about catching the culprit. I found myself skimming through the book between the 60% and 80% mark, it's not that things weren't happening, it's more that it just couldn't care less. I honestly considered dropping the book because I was forcing myself to read it. I'm not sure if the last 15% were worth it but they were better than most of the book.
As for Winter, he was also bland. I didn't find him hot nor felt the chemistry between them except towards the last two chapters. I honestly didn't care much about him either.
All in all, I can see why many have enjoyed this book. Sadly, it wasn't my cup of tea. I would only recommend it if you're an avid UF reader, otherwise, I doubt you will enjoy it....more

My main issue was (view spoiler)[that we are back to the end of book 12, since Dresden was back, the whole ghost thing was absurd because there were barely any "limits" for the magic and Butcher was creating them as he went, there was no system he abided to but created exit/exemptions as he wrote. I have been in a terrible book slump. It's not like I don't have the time (much) to read or I am not reading altogether... I am just not interested. AI have been in a terrible book slump. It's not like I don't have the time (much) to read or I am not reading altogether... I am just not interested. And I have been picking up books of different genres and failing at finding them interesting.
I thought that my usual comfort genre should solve this since I cannot read high fantasy now.. so the next best option? UF. About time I read this book.
It started with a BAM. I had to make sure I am reading the correct book and haven't skipped any because damn.
Alas, I still struggled until the 60% mark, in a way that sure, I am reading and interested in what's going to happen next but not really engaged in the story. But then I couldn't put the book down and I was transported to another world where the outside noise doesn't matter. Where I don't care about checking my phone. Where the only thing that matters is knowing what's going to happen next to the main character. It was just me & the story.
AND I HAVE MISSED THIS FEELING SO DAMN MUCH.
The second half was explosive. It's definitely one of the strongest books in the series so far because as the title says, "changes" flipped the table. It changed my idea of what's next. More or less, the Dresden Files books follow the same formula, typical of this genre. However, this book didn't (and I was hoping for that). It changed the game and left us with a huge cliffhanger. I couldn't help reading the first few pages of the sequel. (I also missed not being able to control my reading whims.)
My point is, this was hella of a book and that says something about the author and the book itself considering my slump and the fact that this is the 12th book of a series.
I also believe I am recovered -if not completely- from this disinterest in books that has been plaguing me since the new year. So thanks, Butcher....more

I started it a few months back but for some reason, I got distracted with other books then never finished it... Honestly, the beginning was kind of slow but the ending was very strong, I loved it! Now I can hardly wait to start Stormlight.. hopefully in a few months once I'm back into reading heavy fantasy books (can't do it right now, it's enough I'm starting to read more).

It was a fun story, the wedding of Georgia and Billy, the werewolves couple. I assumed that those short stories are told by side characters/completely unrelated to the characters that we know and certainly not from Dresden’s perspective. I’m glad they are all that.
But I probably should take a break (been trying to catch up with all the short stories) because some things are becoming repetitive, like the height of Harry. Since they’re completely justified, a short break is best....more

It can be a hit or miss because of the writing style, which is different from the usual YA. I would say this book is in between YA and NA territories. I also enjoyed every minute reading it.
The Last Graduate picks up from the same second Deadly Education had ended. The story continues with no time passing in between, after all, school starts right after induction. There are no breaks in the Schoolomance. The stakes in this book are much higher and what starts as alliance planning for graduation, evolves to be well, suffice to say on a much grander scale than that. I've been having a problem lately. I'm not in a slump but also books that make me avoid doing anything else, even scrolling through that cancerous Instagram explore, are rare. I didn't want anyone to talk to me while I was reading this book nor any distractions whatsoever, it was that gripping.
Let's start by addressing the pink elephant in the room. We all know the backlash Novik got from the Last Graduate. Many tried defending her and saying there was no racism or unfair remarks but I digress.. There were lots of stereotypes and unacceptable comments. Novik acknowledged her error and I believe in second chances. While it wasn't enough for me to change my rating of the first book, I also wanted to give this book a second chance. Naomi Novik made most of it.
Instead of focusing on the differences between cultures and traditions, she tackled a very important and prevalent subject in all societies: privilege. If you've read the first book, you already know that enclave kids always have considerably higher chances of surviving and graduating first and later on in life. They have their future guaranteed after school just because they were born into the right family. They are better prepared as freshmen and always get better supplies from the seniors. They stick together. Were they from the New York enclave, Shanghai, London, or any other enclave across the world, they all help each other within their respective enclaves. Most students would do anything to secure a seat after graduating in an enclave especially the top ones. But the losers, the nobodies, have to secure alliances and work harder in everything, was it at studying or simply gathering mana. This book focused a lot more on this theme and I believe Novik did a good job exploring the relationships between enclave kids and everyone else, how they are so used to get it's difficult for them to give but also, that doesn't mean they all are bad. Not at all.
I don't pretend to understand how every spell worked because I was too busy turning the page to know what happens next. The book was a page-turner and could be easily read in one or two sittings. Sure, we didn't have a lot happening all the time but the way Naomi wrote this book makes it fast-paced. They were few dull moments and instead, I wanted to know what plan they'll come with and how that will turn out.
I also liked El in this book, her character witnessed a considerable development since book 1. She had built a thick shell around being a loner all those years but now finally, she's trying to let people in. Or at least accept their friendships. As for the romance, I honestly didn't see it coming in book 1. I had no idea Orion was the love interest until late into the book. I loved their relationship in the Last Graduate and how it progressed. They make a good couple and Orion (I just wish he had a different name) is such a sweet and selfless person. We discover more about him as a person in this book because Novik is evil, let me leave it at that. Do we have sexual content? This isn't a spoiler for the book but only for this point (view spoiler)[we had a somewhat explicit sex scene, not naming of body parts and such but it was definitely more explicit than the usual ones in YA. I personally didn't mind it at all, I found it well done but PG13. (hide spoiler)]
I'll end by saying that this trilogy is proving to be highly entertaining. This book was definitely the best YA release I've read in a while and that was published after 2018. Magic schools aren't the most innovative plotlines but I love them anyway. In this case, Novik took it and made it her own. It's pretty different from your average book in this genre and totally worth a read.

I'm not a big fan of Maud as a character and wasn't planning on reading this book before I learned it's necessary for the series. I saw no need to switch to Maud. The Innkeeper Chronicles are definitely my least favorite series by the Andrews (well not counting The Edge but the first two books of the latter were solid but they're not that related to each other since each book follows a different couple). I read that the Andrews want to write a Maud spin-off, I thought maybe in a novella format or so but certainly not as the 4th installment. I was expecting the worst and this book luckily, I wasn't as bad as I expected. But still one of the Andrews' weakest novels.
As usual, the book was easy to read and fast-paced, I wasn't bored reading it but I have several issues with Sweep of the Blade.
First Maud. SHE'S SUCH A MARIE SUE. She's perfect and skilled at everything. Negotiations, history, swordplay, politics, languages, and of course, she's a scholar. She always notices things no one else does (albeit they have much more experience in these things) and is quick to suggest strategies. She's basically a wiki at all species in the world and their clans' relations. In a way, she's good at everything. Better than most too. Welp, in some cases, everyone. C'MON.
I'm also not a fan of insta-love and we had barely any build-up here. Arland fell for her too fast. Speaking of Arland, he's a vampire but only in name. Why call his clans vampires if they have none of the vampires' traits.
I said in one of my previous reviews of this series that I'd love to see more of this world and I stand by my word. I just hope we see it through someone more interesting.
I did have a bit of fun reading this book but not the usual humor/witty comments/fun secondary characters type of Andrews book. The ending left me very much curious about what's going to happen next. I hope this book will be the last Maud book because I'm so over her perfection. She's not realistic at all.

I was not a fan of that. I thought this novella is 3.5 and not 4.5 but even if I know a small (albeit expected) spoiler of book 4, I can now say I'm looking forward to it. I wasn't sure if I want to read the book but I don't think I'm strong enough to skip a book by a favorite author of mine. My dislike for Maud's arc certainly lessened even if my question marks about her didn't.
Sweep with Me made me remember how much I like the world setting in this series and enjoy reading about all those unusual guests. It's Treaty Stay celebration and they can't say no to anyone who asks to stay at the Inn... which can only lead to a big mess. It's another story about Dina, Sean, and the weird guests. It was so very fun and heartwarming read.
I enjoyed that we saw more of Orro, how I want to taste his cooking honestly!! His part of the story was hilarious and cute. I will always be a fan of the side characters IA writes. I'm also now wondering more about the Drífan (will she have her own book?? I'd be interested in that!). The space chickens *cough* were also a nice addition.
I don't believe this series ended yet because we still don't know what happened to Dina's parents. The books are really entertaining however and while will never be a match for KD nor HL (and let's be honest, these are so much better than most UF out there), I'm sure I'm going to enjoy them because of IA style and humour. I'm glad the romance wasn't heavy because I don't feel anything for Dina and Sean as a couple and we focused more on the side characters.
Overall, a light novella that made me want more stories in this freakish world. I can easily see it as a long series of separate stories (and who knows, maybe we'll see more of The Edge's characters). I certainly hope she continues with it once we resolve Dina's arc with different characters. Just like Kinsman's universe, KD, and HL, I always want to see more of these worlds (they're so fun and interesting) but also meet new characters....more
