Grumps are my catnip in romance, because they usually hide the softest soul under all the barking and sniping.
I loved discovering that Jasper was the ultimate caretaker under the rough, unfriendly exterior. Just one look at Ellis and Jasper's protective side set off, but what really warmed me up was the way he instinctively knew what Ellis needed when the latter had difficulty in expressing himself.
The last years of Ellis's life have been rough and my heart went to him. He struggled every day, utterly lost when he arrived at Farthingdale. But Jasper saw his turmoil and, most of all, saw what a special young man Ellis really was, and did everything in his power to make him feel safe, cared for and worthy.
Jackie North has created two rich characters, with layers and layers of emotional depths, and their story completely touched me. The very short time frame in which feelings grew between Jasper and Ellis almost touched insta-love territory, but it didn't feel like that at all. Their emotions were genuine, honest and pure.
Jasper and Ellis went through a few rough patches, but they braved the adversities together. I loved witnessing their journey to finding love, acceptance, safety, trust and home with each other.
Captivating and poignant, this story is a must read.
