It's a very solid fantasy with an endearing heroine, but a lukewarm romance at best. Would it be unseemly of me to say that Reshaye is just misunderstood...more

It felt like nothing happened in the span of 400 pages. All the character relationships (especially the romance) was so painfully dry, I could feel my lips cracking and taste the ashy blandness on my tongue.
All in all: This book is underwhelming, but at least the heroine was iconic
“The Empress’ Champion. She’s undefeated. Stay away from the whore. She’s been in bed with the Elvasi since she was a babe.” She turned back to whoever said that. She kept her face schooled through the lance of hurt and rage, and just met the dark eyes of the male, radiating the same calm she always did. She never gave them anything more. They didn’t deserve anything else from her. Stand down. We all know who the most dominant Andinna in the pits is. Stand down, asshole, or I’ll find a way to gut you for that comment. Every one of her thoughts was a growl in her head. She wanted to bare her canines and snap at him, but in the end, she also knew she didn’t need to. He lowered his eyes first. “Thought so,” she said softly

This wasn't perfect by any means. Apart from being predictable, there are so many ways in which this book could've been epic instead of just great. But honestly it doesn't matter. I had an amazing time with the story and characters. Reminded me a lot of The Queen's Gambit but with tennis.
fav quotes (for myself)
In my first concrete memories, I am young but already annoyed.
"You beat Ilona at Monte Carlo in '88 and then told reporters it was 'embarrassingly easy,' so no, Ilona does not want to play you" "It was embarrassingly easy. I was embarrassed for her. That's empathy."
And so, for the first time in decades, I stand in front of a roaring crowd and cry.
I feel as if I can hear my father cheering. I can hear Bowe clapping. The whole stadium is going wild. But I cannot hear anything as clearly as the sound of my own voice, begging me: Let this be enough.

That is why I am hella bummed. The characters were such a disappointment.

Three words: Smutty hunger games.
I didn't know what to expect when I picked up quiet, little Maci's story. But this actually exceeded all my expectations, probably because I had none after the first book. So much more action and excitement here.
In every prison planet series I've read so far, the heroines always rely on the hero to protect them. But Maci, despite being a voluntary "mute" most of the time, is freakishly smart. They balance each other out perfectly in order to survive.
The only downside is everything happened in a matter of a week. They had nice chemistry, doesn't mean it couldn't have been better. But them being hunted like prey almost felt like a valid reason for their insta-love, so it wasn't a big issue for me.
He leans in for a kiss, then pulls me even closer. “I would fight for you every day of—” “Maci!” The door flies open at his back, and Lilli rushes into the room. “Out!” Callum shouts, without turning. “You’re interrupting a tender fucking moment!”
I was going to write a proper review, with a summary n shit, but then I realised I have no idea what the fuck was happening this entire book.2.5 stars

Seriously, if you asked me to visually describe a single thing, I'd show you a picture of a white screen. It's all blank in my head. The writing was that vague. PD should probably invest in a description or two.
The side plot with the texts and urban legends? I am still trying to figure out what any of it meant, who these people are, and why they were there.
The family tree and random names from different book series? I'm not even gonna bother getting into that cluster of a mindfuck. I think at some point I resigned to just nodding my head and smiling as if I'm not totally clueless.
I guess I can do some character descriptions though:
The heroine was such a breath of fresh air: unique, unapologetic, lethally seductive, proud as a Viking, and unmistakingly intelligent. [image3.5 stars
