Too While I never want to accuse a writer of using AI (or being AI) without definitive proof, there was something off with the writing and the world. Too many scenes were copy-cat of others, the writing wasn't in-depth and a lot of the conversations were missing vital pieces. This could have been an amazing book about finding inner strength, forgiveness, groveling and how to navigate the past but the writing was lackluster. ...more

This book was 200 pages too long, The best way to describe the FMC is a rabid chihuahua. But unlike the FMC, chihuahuas have actual bite behind them.
This book was 200 pages too long, and the plot was so stalled for so long.
Author needs a very talented editor to help them with pacing and plot development. At one point, we read about the FMC living her life over a couple weeks (maybe a month or so); then, we get to hear about one of the MMCs living their life over that same time frame.
None of the MMCs had distinct personalities and giving one of them a southern drawl, doesn't qualify.
The most interesting person in this book is South and she just shows up randomly.
The Reluctant Hero also suffers from the "kitchen sink" sin i.e., everything was in this book except the kitchen sink. Billionaires, check. A bit of PNR, check. Psycho puppies, check. Hints of mafia, check. Sex trafficking, check. A secret society, check. Corrupt politicians and law, check. Murderous parents, check. Cheating spouses, check. Threats of sexual punishment for displaying a personality, check. OW drama, check.
There's numerous plot holes and in some places, decisions made by the author that just don't make sense.
One of the MMC's is Asian, so of course the FMC is called -Chan. I think the author watches too much anime.
This could have been so good, it had the bones to be, but do to the lack of editing, proper character development, no grovel by the MMC's and the serious lack of plot development made the book fall short of its potential. ...more

32 year old adults refuse to talk about things that happened when they were 19 and still hold huge grudges.
Lucy, the FMC kept saying how angry she was, but nothing in her actions gave that feeling. Author TOLD us and never showed us the personality of each of the people in the story.
The dialogue of the father felt contrite and not real.
Couldn't really connect to the town or the people involved. ...more

While I will never accuse an author of using AI to help write a book without proof, what I can say about this book is that there is something off with the writing, verbiage, pace and sentence structure.
A CIA agent was strong until about 20% until she allowed BBS to take over. I had high hopes for the FMC until she went from a scared woman who thought she was going to be SA (FMC was crying, shaking, clearly fearful) to a woman following her desire in less than 2 seconds. It was shameful.
The order of events were weird; the dialogue was also strange and oftentimes didn't make sense.
There was an attempt at worldbuilding, but not enough for me to connect to the world or the characters.
The most unbelievable aspect? The children. ...more

(view spoiler)[If the father knew that the traffickers were getting close (because of the news report), WHY DIDN'T HE SAY SOMETHING? WHY DIDN'T HE LEAVE A NOTE WITH THE FOOD HE DROPPED OFF? (hide spoiler)] But of course he couldn't do that, or we wouldn't have the cliffhanger (that we all saw coming) happen.
Another unfortunate issue with the writing of the book: all of the MMC's were the same, even the father's POV. No distinct personalities and the glimpses we saw of them, were washed away pretty quickly.
The MMC's all agreed that they will have to grovel, but like it was just ringing the doorbell twice a day?
This new generation of writers has spent too much time reading fanfic and doesn't understand the basic term of endearment format: terms of endearment are not capitalized.

Over 30 errors were reported to Amazon as the author doesn't know how to format her manuscript properly. Once I hit 30 errors in 15%, I stopped reading.
The writing itself was simplistic; dialogue unbelievable; and the character interactions were all cookie cutter.

Shade, who hates his father and doesn't believe things that he says and does, takes his word as gospel as it pertains to Daisy. That was a major plot hole and didn't make sense in terms of the character (Shade). While others had said that Daisy is a strong FMC, I would push back a bit on that. She is written well and is well developed but she isn't strong. Her body and mind are just used to nine years of torture and bullying, so what the college kids do isn't anything new to her. However, the men could be written better. They are interchangeable and nothing really stands out about them. This could have been a dark romance without the sexual punishment and the sexual assault. That didn't fit in the story and it was written as if the author was like "okay, we need to have a SA scene soon." And because this is the start of a RH, there are some dumb nicknames: Tulip, princess, shut-in, kitten, beautiful. ...more

This author, alongside other KU authors refuse to pay for a proper editor are very confused on this very simple rule. If the author cannot afford a good editor, Google exists.
There is nothing new with this book. Corrupt packs, scent matches, escaped omega, scent matched alphas that threaten sexual violence if an omega doesn't conform, scent matched alphas that emotionally abuse an omega while in heat even though she has a history of abuse and excessive use of pet names are all present in this book.
Dumb nicknames used in this book: little Omega, sweetness, honey, little one, baby, baby girl, pet, sparrow, little mouse, love, sunshine, darling, beautiful, and little menace. Twelve out of those are from her scent matches. Does she have twelve mates? Nope.
The one that gets me the most is the FMCs SCENT MATCHED mates refusing to treat her like an adult and still threaten her with violence and controlling behavior. It's as if the author wanted to write an abused woman but didn't actually think about how the men in her life should treat her. ...more

Tempe, Beau, and Meghan are often misspelled; author doesn't know how to use quotation marks correctly; there are words missing from sentences; there's also the prolific amount of typos that riddle this book.
What I am trying to figure out is that this book was published in 2022, so how hasn't the author fixed these errors?

The story had so much potential, but it was written by an author who didn't know how to make characters well rounded or have the characters THINK about their actions.

However, she is beginning to lose that independence and making very dumb decisions. Her inner monologue: "I don't want anything to do with my scent matches." What she does instead: surrounds herself with their business and submits to their (the mates) proposals. It was nice to have hope that we would get a strong female lead, but that hope is slowly eroding. So far the dumb ass nicknames are: omega, little omega, lamb, kid, and pretty girl. Also, the formula for RH mates is also present in this book: the dominate one (who is probably into BDSM, that's a prediction on my end), the golden retriever and the one who hates the FMC for [insert dumb reason].
53% in: Only about 4 or 5 days have passed since Emme was caught, and everyone in her life has betrayed her so far. She keeps saying things like "I can't trust them or their actions" yet she simpers to them (her mates) every single interaction. I miss the strong FMC from the first ten pages. Where did she go?
Completed Well, I saw that cliffhanger coming from a mile away. Also saw Finley saying the "she is toxic and will tear us apart so I have to stop her from bonding with my mates" line because this book follows the formulaic shifter RH men trend. Ya know, it's okay if not all men want to bond to an omega, but give actual reasons not imaginary ones. The first 90% or so of the book, 5-6 days had passed since Emme arrived at the compound. THen all of a sudden a week flies by. I said it earlier, and it bears repeating: I missed the Emme from the first chapter. She had personality, spunk and seemed like a fun girl. However, she was lost and her personality never returned.
Updated list of very dumb and not at all original nicknames: little omega, omega, pretty girl, lamb, darlin' girl, freckles, sunshine, shortcake, sweet omega, baby, my sweet omega.
