Laszlo is the tale of Fingal T. Smyth’s search for the meaning of life using multiple modalities and approaches. His travels and experiments may have wide-reaching effects that could change the world.
This book is a blend of metaphysical contemplation and science fiction/fantasy. It’s written in a stream of consciousness fashion as the main character travels the world and meets various people. I think there should be trigger warnings as there are both suicides and an uncomfortable obsession with immolation. Philosophical ponderings are intertwined with glimpses of various facets of society, from multiple countries and cultures. Sobering look at the challenges of survival even as the narrator seems to always have enough money to tinker and to move from place to place. The author seems focused on tastes, smells, cats, young girls, and obscure facts that all combine to form a background to his search for and efforts to control his inner self and attempt to solve the riddle of the universe. There are a lot of quirky characters that come and go, as well as allusions to things that only a select group will know, including things like test patterns that used to occupy the airtime of television that didn’t—gasp—have 24/7 programming.
This was a difficult read for me, but it is definitely thought-provoking and made me reflect on the difficulties of communicating with each other. I felt that Fingal is a bit condescending to the adult women in his life, and quite a few of the events required a significant suspension of disbelief, but I enjoyed the lyrical descriptions of the different locations visited and the reminders of things from our common pasts.

“Stellar Heir” by Scott Killian centers around the adventures of Jael and his sidekick and best friend, Goni, whose scavenging run results in the acquisition of an artifact that plunges them into a conflict and quest that may signal the end of the universe. Enemies and allies come out of nowhere, and the past and the future are inextricably intertwined.
This young-adult science fiction tale is full of nonstop action and imaginative scenarios. The story has a comic-book feel, with plenty of violence and excitement, but I would have liked a bit more depth to the characters. The requisite quest, quirky sidekick, damsel in distress, noble hero, and multiple evil villains are all present, with even an unlikely “pet”, but some of the events strained my incredulity a bit too far. This is the first book in the series, so there are quite a few dangling threads, and the world building is a bit basic, but complexity will undoubtedly ensue as stories are added. Those who like fast-paced adventures with plenty of fight scenes should have fun with this story.

Russell is the first novella in the ‘Sun, Moon, and Stars’ series that features Zal, a one-eyed sun mage and Torian, who has taken the chance to escape their captivity but is completely naïve about the world they have fled to. The pair could not be more unalike, but somehow they form a connection that may provide the key to preventing the destruction of the world that may be headed for a massive change no matter what anyone does.
This inventive gay science fiction/fantasy romance story explores the connection between a non-binary being who has functioned as a sexual surrogate and been confined to a laboratory for most of their life and a celibate sun mage whose life has been diametrically opposite. Each discovers that they have a depth of knowledge that the other person lacks, but their connection and purpose in life grows stronger with each passing day. I was intrigued by the world-building and uniqueness of these characters and immediately drawn into their struggles. The story ends a bit abruptly, and I was only mollified by the idea that the sequel was immediately available because I really wanted to know what happens next.

“Principles” by E.J. Russell is the second novella in the ‘Sun, Stars, and Moon’ series that features Torin and Zal, an unlikely pair who are trying to follow the rules of their society but discover that Torin’s escape from his unfeeling masters may not be as definitive as he would like, and his and Zal’s future together might just be doomed.
This gay science fiction/fantasy romance continues to explore the relationship between an asexual character who has made a supreme sacrifice and the non-binary being he has formed a mutual attachment with. The artful blend of science fiction and fantasy explores the concept of finding ways to explain the apparently inexplicable without the tools to do so.
I formed a connection to these characters in “Partnership,” the previous story in the series (which I think is required reading in order to understand the framework of this world), and I love watching their relationship deepen even as I wince at the trials they’re dealing with. I enjoy the creative world-building this author is expert at, and I like the twists and turns that keep the action exciting. This is another fun, entertaining quick read featuring memorable characters. As with the previous story, this one ends with plenty of dangling threads, so I definitely hope the sequel will be coming soon.

“The Not so True Adventures of Brandon, Josh, and Adam” by Barry M. Fellinger describes the adventures of three cousins who get caught in an unexpected side effect of Brandon and Josh’s previous experience with the Intergalactic Council on Obedience to Parents. Despite their intermittent squabbles in the past, the cousins must find a way to work together with their alien friends and allies to solve the kinks in the space-time continuum that they’ve inadvertently disrupted.
This fantastical children’s story was a little confusing at first, given the duplication of a couple of the main characters and the references to previous occurrences which took place in another book. It’s no surprise that the alien Derks discover there is an issue with having used time travel on Josh and Brandon that causes a disruption of the timestream. The adventures in which broccoli, of all things, figures prominently is a wacky and imaginative tale that manages to touch on the complicated-yet-simple relationship that a trio of eleven-year-old boys can have.
I love that the Derks are both fearsome and unthreatening, and that this all starts because of defiant behavior that is being punished. There are various lessons included in the story that are artfully blended with unexpected twists and turns and unusual characters, and even the science lessons are conveyed in an understandable manner. This is both a fun read and a cautionary tale to remind one of the importance of…eating one’s broccoli (and respecting one’s parents)!

“Fall of the Pathfinder” by L.C. Lowe is an intriguing and complex science fiction story that features Julian Sastre , a young miner who is struggling to overcome the stigma of his name, dig out from crushing debt, and give his mother a decent life. Being punished and ostracized yet again for something beyond his control results in him taking a path he never would have considered before and exposes him to truths that make him doubt everything and everyone he’s ever known.
This is ostensibly a gay science fiction story, but there is no overt relationship in this first book of the ‘Kessler Effect’ series. The world-building is complex and intriguing, and the gradual revelations and twists keep one invested in the story, even though some of the events are harsh and shocking. As the warnings indicate, there is only a partial resolution at the end, so one definitely wants the sequel, to learn what is actually the truth and to follow these characters on their adventures. I definitely want to find out what happens next and will be on the lookout for the second book in the series.

“If the Light Escapes” by Brenda Marie Smith follows the adventure of eighteen-year-old Keno, who is struggling to keep his neighborhood safe a 4 stars
“If the Light Escapes” by Brenda Marie Smith follows the adventure of eighteen-year-old Keno, who is struggling to keep his neighborhood safe and surviving in a world that has lost its technology after an EMP pulse. In addition to those from outside who threaten to destroy everything that has been eked out of the harsh environment that they now live in, there are both family and climate challenges to overcome…and everything they do may still not be enough.
This post-apocalyptic science fiction story is gritty, dark, depressing, violent, and thought-provoking. This story is part of the ‘Braving the Light’ series, but it can be read as a stand-alone tale, although I am pretty sure it would be better appreciated if the first book, “If Darkness Takes Us” is read first. The imagery is vivid, and the author does a great job of pointing out both the difficulties of surviving in a world that lacks the amenities and essentials that we take for granted.
I like the range of ages represented in this microcosm of society even as I ached for the difficult decisions and the loss that is inevitable in such a primitive existence. The loss of innocence on multiple levels is graphically described, and I cringed at some of the situations that were faced. As a gardener, the challenges of growing supplies under such challenging conditions resonated with me, although I am thankful that I don’t have such life-and-death consequences to my success or failure to grow produce.
Those who are familiar with this genre know that survival at any cost is a major factor in the stories depicted. Those who are not typical readers of this type of story should be warned that there are plenty of triggers and the tale may be depressing to some. Those looking for a compelling and sobering read should definitely get caught by the spell woven by this talented author.

His mission is fraught with danger and he doesn’t know who he can trust or who his allies are, and a wrong conclusion can be deadly…for him and for the colonists.
This science fiction story does a great job of evoking a very different society that has evolved in the 22nd century. Not only are there tech implants that provide humans with advanced capabilities, but there are human-like robots commissioned to support humans and help them achieve their goals. It was a little confusing, trying to adjust to the concepts of the different types of artificial lifeforms and figuring out who had what goal, and eerie but not unexpected to learn how bad things have become on Earth.
I was drawn into the story and surprisingly attached to some of the secondary characters, but sometimes disconcerted by apparently changing loyalties. The tension heightens as the story unfolds, and the conflict between the two main factions highlights the challenge of identifying what is most beneficial to all beings. There is an entertaining combination of technology and emotion with vivid imagery and I think this story will appeal to those who like suspense thrillers as well as fans of science fiction.

"Flicker of Fortune" by S.R. Cronin is a science fiction/fantasy story that is part of the ’46. Ascending’ series. This particular volume centers on Ariel Zeitman, who possesses the power to see the future but has not really explored her ability or consulted with others about it until a job interview changes her destiny. As she discovers that there are different permutations of clairvoyance, each decision becomes more pivotal, and her interactions with others who possess this ability draw her deeper into a dangerous web. Not only is the distant future of humanity at stake, but Ariel’s immediate future gets more and more precarious. It’s time for the Zeitman family to have a frank talk.
The fascinating aspect of this series is that each book can indeed stand alone but definitely is enhanced by the reader being aware of the storyline of those that came before. I inadvertently started reading the sequel to this book and therefore got a slightly different perspective (mom’s) to some of the events that take place without too much of a spoiler but it was no problem to stop that one and read this one. They flow together seamlessly.
I love that various aspects of mental abilities are showcased even as current events and the possibilities inherent in the manipulation of things are explored. This author is adept at playing the “what if” game and provides thought-provoking stories that also entertain.
I had trouble connecting with Ariel. She doesn’t seem to have had the strong ties to her family that her siblings have and her decisions are sometimes a little off to me. Those who have triggers should be warned that there are a couple of coercive scenes that were uncomfortable for me—although they could have been far worse—and I was disturbed that there were no immediate repercussions for the perpetrator. There are also multiple characters and interconnections that get a little disconcerting as their points of view are intermittently included but it all eventually comes together.
One of the things that amused me the most is that this book is primarily located in the far north (and beyond) and had very chilly settings whereas the following book involves activity at the opposite pole, with the attendant heat and humidity. I look forward to reading more adventures involving this very unique family and others with abilities that truly reflect the maxim that great power comes with great responsibility. This is not my favorite book of the series, but it does make one think about cause and effect with global implications as well as offers a glimpse of what the mind could be capable of.

Senth has had to deal with the prejudice against half-Kin, but at least has a powerful bulwark to fall back on whereas his half-brother Khyff is fueled by hatred to help him survive as a pleasure slave. Their meeting may be explosive…or fatal.
This adult science fiction novella establishes an intriguing society with nice twists and turns. I was immediately drawn to the main character (and the fascinating tech) and the unique elements that have shaped his development. The multi-level challenges such as needing an injection to keep his feral side at bay, lacking claws, and the drawback of a youthful appearance piqued my interest but the sharp contrast with Khyff’s horrific circumstances made me even more curious about these two. I love the emotion that is evoked when actions speak louder than words between Senth and his adoptive father. This is a great story to whet one’s appetite about the rest of the series and I look forward to reading more about these delicious characters.

“Twists of Time” by S.R. Cronin is another story in the ’46. Ascending’ series that blends fantasy and science fiction. This particular tale spotlights Alex Zeitman as well as a Mayan family tasked through the ages with saving and guarding an essential artifact.
The book is aptly named because it shifts between time periods and various characters, so it takes a bit of flexibility to connect with the story line, but it is worth it to persist because eventually the elements meld to present a fascinating premise. I think that what I appreciate most about this series is the way each book spotlights a particular societal ill, highlighting the insidiousness of evil that is permeating our lives. The impact of racial prejudice is showcased in several time periods and environments in an exciting story that also features another remarkable capability in the Zeitman family.
I think one of this author’s talents is the ability to create likeable seemingly commonplace characters who have hidden depths and wonderful strength of character. Even as one aches for the travails they have to overcome, and worries that evil will get the upper hand, the courage and ingenuity displayed by these folks make one cheer for the good guys and the reader can’t help but be inspired and reassured that there is an ongoing desire to have good triumph over evil. Sadly, the subject matter is all too relevant to the happenings in today’s society, but hopefully each person who reads this entertaining story will also be inspired to have hope for a better world.
Although this is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone story, but one will better appreciate some of the nuances if one becomes familiar with some of the other characters. I look forward to meeting more of these quiet superheroes in subsequent stories.

“Layers of Light” by S.R. Cronin focuses on Teddie Zeitman as she discovers her special power and becomes pivotal in a struggle against sex trafficking that encompasses multiple countries and requires an eclectic group of individuals to work together. The danger strikes too close for comfort, and Teddie will have to learn who to trust and who to be wary of.
This book is part of the ’46. Ascending’ series and is a science fiction/fantasy tale for mature audiences set in the contemporary world with its all-too-dismaying evils. Once again, the author follows several points of view, each with a separate storyline, but weaves a mesmerizing tapestry that is both thought-provoking and somewhat disheartening as it highlights the challenges that face females the world over. Due to the frank description of some of the horrific aspects of sex trafficking, the story is not recommended for younger readers nor those who have triggers related to sexual abuse.
I appreciate that the books in this series can indeed be read as stand-alone tales but are all connected. It’s a little surprising that Teddie was kept in the dark about the other members of her family for so long but I enjoyed getting a chance to see another side of her after her pivotal role in helping take down racists at her high school that is depicted in “Twists of Time.”
The multiple threads in this story…the impoverished girl whose virginity makes her such a valued commodity, the orphaned child groomed for the sex trade, the attractive teen whose gender threatens to derail her dream of climbing mountains, and Teddie’s very memorable visit to an exotic foreign land, all combine to make a compelling and eye-opening tale. I enjoy the psychic elements and the chance to see different cultures and I can only hope that there are groups of people who are able to access talents beyond the norm. There are delightful reminders that attraction can occur for the unlikeliest of pairs and chilling interludes that underscore that there are truly evil beings in the world…in other words, there’s a little something for everyone. I’ve enjoyed all of the stories in this series that I have read thus far and I look forward to discovering what other amazing talents are showcased.

Cronin tells Zane Zeitman’s story, as he becomes involved in a pharmaceutical company named Penthes and is tasked with far more responsibility than he ever imagined. Zane’s extraordinary powers of mimicry are showcased more and more as his life progresses, but he never dreams how important they can be, until he meets an unusual trio of people who remind him that the world is more connected than anyone realizes.
This intriguing story is a combination of science and speculative fiction with elements of fantasy and adult romance. Although it is part of a series, one can read this story without having read any of the other books. The cameos by characters from other stories help interconnect the tales and give interesting dimensions and thought-provoking concepts. I love the way seemingly unconnected elements are introduced and elaborated on until things start to weave together into a fun and complex set of mysteries.
The heartbreaking elements behind young Afi’s experience with a conversion camp and the struggle that Joy has to go through to live the life she wants as well as the mystery surrounding their reluctant benefactor all combine to keep one curious about what is going to happen. Those who are concerned with such things should be advised that there are unconventional romances portrayed. The stories I’ve read in this series thus far combine science and fantasy, suspense, family dynamics, and world issues in an entertaining tale and each main character has remarkable abilities. I look forward to learning what other powers these folks will display.

“Star Marque Rising” by Shami Stovall follows Clevon Demarco, a shady denizen of Capital Station who somehow crosses paths with Endellion Voight as she pursues her goal to be a governor, despite not being a superhuman. Her ship, the Star Marque, is staffed by a disparate combination of individuals who are assisting their captain on her juggernaut path, but each of them has a hurdle that may be insurmountable, especially since not all of the obstacles are external. Clevon is introduced to a whole new set of challenges, ethically and physically, and must make decisions that may change the worlds, and not necessarily for the better.
This exciting science fiction story introduces an intriguing society that is a bit disconcerting, given all of the genetic manipulations and the hierarchy that has resulted. The twists and continuous action keep one invested in this story that is unpredictable and has fascinating characters who tend to be a little off the norm. Those who are squeamish should be advised that there is definitely violence, and it is noteworthy that the story definitely leaves the door open for a sequel. I enjoyed meeting the unusual beings (e.g. Blub the fish) but I definitely am curious about the backstories and amazed (and dismayed) at the ruthlessness displayed. Kudos to the author for creating such memorable characters who shift one’s perception of them. Hopefully, a sequel is in the works and some of the dangling threads will be tied off. I look forward to discovering what new adventures this imaginative author will chronicle.

"future comes from behind" by S.T.K. Chan depicts the journeys that a female named Lisa participates in as she becomes fully immersed in experiencing the dimension of Exo and learns how to interact with her fellow shamans as they attempt to battle evil by subtly altering past events.
This thought-provoking science fantasy tale is the first book in the ‘Paradigm Shift’ series. Through a series of vignettes, the author shows how a specially talented female hones her skills by participating in various key battles throughout history.
Unfortunately, the abrupt shifts between time and location interspersed with the snapshot looks at the main couple’s lives was disconcerting to me and sometimes it was difficult to discern when and where we were in Lisa’s existence. The cast of characters keeps growing even as the hints about Lisa’s power and role are gradually doled out, and it was sometimes difficult to figure out what was going on, especially with the folks who may be at different levels of expertise or power in the mysterious realm of Exo. The various rules governing what may or may not be shared and the mysteries hinted at regarding Lisa’s (and the world’s) future are somewhat nebulous and hopefully will continue to be revealed in subsequent books.
I think that the premise is good, and the creative way of distilling key conflicts around the world during various eras of history will undoubtedly appeal to those who enjoy analyzing the permutations of the butterfly effect on historical battles.
