Tammy L. Gray has written a beautiful, powerful, and inspiring story in her novel Love and a Little White Lie. This story is about January, or Jan as Tammy L. Gray has written a beautiful, powerful, and inspiring story in her novel Love and a Little White Lie. This story is about January, or Jan as she sometimes prefers to be called, and her struggle with heartbreak and coming to know and accept herself so that she can know and accept God. This is a very down to earth and easily relatable story for readers. The development of the plot and characters and the tie into going from not believing there is a God (how could there be with everything that’s happened in Jan’s life), to coming to understand that even in the bad times, God is there. This story is one that will leave a lasting impression on the thoughts and hearts of readers. They will not want to put it down till the turn of the last page. And possibly not even then.

The first two thirds of the story has more of a women’s fiction feel, with a bit of romance in the last third of the book. The story’s a bit slow in the beginning. There’s also a part where the main character, Alyce loses a necklace as a child and it randomly shows up when she’s eighteen or so; this seems a bit unrealistic. Readers will enjoy how the book is split into different sections indicating the different parts of Alyce’s life. This tale is a light easy read that readers of historical romance and women’s fiction will enjoy.

This story has an interesting turn of events when a young girl is left destitute after her father passes away and she quickly goes in search of work as a governess. This story had great potential, but just didn’t quite get there with the character development and about the first half of the book filled with the back story that makes the rest of the book compelling. This story have a bit of a historical Gothic feel to it that is an excellent addition to the tale. Overall readers will find this to be a sweet and enjoyable read.
