Intelligently written, engrossing novel of the Chequy, a British supernatural government organization. They fight rogue supernatural creatures and in this second book in the series they struggle to blend with their generations long enemies, formerly thought to be extinct, the Grafters. O'Malley's writing is a treat for your mind and I savored this delightful novel. I only wish I still had more to read....more

The world building is well done, the plot is interesting and the characters are well developed. There is a lot of grey area in Bennett's world and it's interesting to contemplate Saypur vs the Continent and their long history, present and future.
I recommend this fast paced plot (once you get into it) to fantasy fans, especially thriller/fantasy fans....more
I enjoyed book 1 but found the characters' unwillingness to take charge of their lives (instead of drinking and moping) really annoying.
Book 2 startsI enjoyed book 1 but found the characters' unwillingness to take charge of their lives (instead of drinking and moping) really annoying.
Book 2 starts off a little slow but once I got about 150 pages in, I was completely hooked. You get Julia's back story and Quentin finally coming into himself and getting past the book 1 moping/drinking.
I can't wait for book 3!
Re-read 2016: Great audio narration. I think I'll only listen to these in the future....more

I've read this twice now and while the second time around I started out listening to the audio (wonderfully done), it was so good that I had to pick up the print edition so I could read it faster. I promptly devoured it....more

This makes me want to read more folklore and reimagined fairy tales.
Gaiman narrates the audio and it really adds to the story to hear it in his voice. I only listened to the beginning in audio, but for the rest of the book I heard his voice in my head as I was reading....more

In present day Victor has just escaped from prison and is determined to take down Eli. 10 years ago Victor and Eli were best friends and college roommates. They both studied science and medicine and Eli's senior thesis was on EOs or ExtraOrdinaries--people who have had near death experiences and came back with some sort of extra ability.
Crafty Victor wants to take Eli's thesis one step farther and try to become an EO. The friends have a rather serious falling out and 10 years later both wants to make the other suffer.
This is an interesting and suspenseful book. There are a handful of main characters and their lives and beliefs are revealed piecemeal as the book switches between the present and past. Are EOs superheroes or evil and unnatural beings? Schwab tackles mortality and villainy in this very readable book that takes you for a ride. This book has been labeled as fantasy, but the only fantasy elements are the existence of EOs, so I wouldn't pay too much attention to the fantasy label.
Fans of Donna Tartt will appreciate this book....more

This book is full of fun facts and stories about space, all told with a heavy dose of humor. The content is interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed read this book. It made me want to read more about space. It is also a great companion to "The Astronaut Wives Club" about the wives of the early astronauts.
You can't go wrong with a Mary Roach book. I chide myself for waiting so long to read one of her books. I love her style and am looking forward to reading all of her books....more
