4 Stars
Definitely dark, this was more harsh than the first story, but like Fierce & Fabulous, it all starts with a kiss - a kiss that ignites and doesn’t let go.
Connelly is a cop and has white knight syndrome, ready to come to the rescue for anyone who needs aid. He has admired Azaria from afar, sees his strength and knows there are some secret struggles going on… he just wants to help to show he cares. When they act on their mutual attraction, it’s so very hard for Connelly to restrain himself from stepping in to save the day.
As expected, Azaria is tough and independent and wants to show himself and others that he can take care of his own shit. Show no weakness - that’s his mantra. Problem is, his pride is so stubborn and willful in refusing to ask for help, it unfortunately leads to very unpleasant things.
It’s no surprise these guys come together explosively, while somewhat obliviously perpetuating their problems into awful consequences. They will need to learn some harsh truths about themselves in order to have an actual relationship with the other. The road is rocky, for sure.
Of note, there’s a consistent theme running throughout this series. No doubt, there’s insta-love. One MC is strong and stable - literally and figuratively. He’s kinda the more alpha type, smitten and ready to commit whole heartedly once he’s had a taste. Thing is, the other MC has had it rough in life, doesn’t think a happy ending is possible for a guy like him and fights his attraction over and over. These things could get stale or old fast, but Varlet pretty much handles it with great writing as she brings on the tough feels, as well as treating us to some delicious smex.
So yes, in a lot of ways this was like Fierce & Fabulous, but it had its own grittier take on the above, which actually made me like it more despite the angst and pain. Obviously, I look forward to the next installment despite the probable similarities that are sure to come. However, I embrace this series for what it is, so I’m ready for the next chapter!!
