Z doesn't need a hero…

Azariah "Z" Hayes is a diamond. Equal parts strength and sparkle, he's more than capable of standing on his own stilettos. So if waiting tables and stripping at The Vibe are what it takes to keep a roof over his head, well, there are worse ways to earn a living.

Connelly is a white knight with a badge…

For NYPD detective Connelly Reid, to serve and protect is just another day at the office—even if that means protecting himself from his own true desires. He's been curious about Z, his waiter, for months, but it's not until he sees him in his makeup and heels that the curiosity becomes a fierce attraction. Z, despite all his over-the-top dazzle, might just be the man Connelly has been waiting for his entire life.

But when Connelly investigates underground porn and drug activity with ties to The Vibe, one thing becomes very clear—acting on what he knows is going to hurt Z, financially and emotionally. And though Connelly would love nothing more than to fix all of Z's problems, no amount of mind-blowing sex can make Z comfortable becoming dependent on his lover. Yet if there's one thing Connelly knows from his years on the force, it's this: when things go bad, you need a trusted partner to have your back.

I love this series....men wearing make up,long hair and dancing in heels .....just my thing and couple them with a hot rugged man and I'm practically growling.

Azariah/Z was introduced in book one and I couldn't wait for his story.
A bit like Ansel(from book one) he's had a troubled past but has managed to turn his life around. But he's at a low point when this book opens.Without giving too much away he's put in an almost impossible position which causes him to make a monumental decision. He's way too proud to ask for help and wants to be in control of his own life.

Connelly is the good guy.Always there to help and try and 'fix' people.
He's already been a bit captivated by Z who works at a diner he goes to but his fascination goes into overdrive when he sees Z in his heels and make up.

While this is definitely harder hitting than book one I didn't find it particularly dark, although Z's actions were a bit difficult to read at times.
Z definitely went on more of an emotional journey in this one.The conclusion was HFN and I'm really interested to,hopefully, hearing more from these two men in future books.
Oh,and I want a Connelly of my own.....just perfect!!

If you enjoyed Fierce & Fabulous I'm sure you'll enjoy this one...

Love was intense like that.

It made you feel untouchable—more fierce than a pair of red-bottom heels ever could.

Azariah is an angry, dark-haired angel. He's proud and stubborn, unwilling to ask for help even as his life crumbles around him. He'd rather put himself in danger's way than be seen as weak.

Left an orphan at an early age after his accepting, free-spirited mother passed away, Azariah was raised in a cold and conservative Orthodox Jewish household. His favorite color is black, and he doesn't believe in rainbows, unicorns, or picket fences.

But Connelly does, and when he sees Z in makeup and a pair of fuck-me heels, he can't stay away.

Dark & Dazzling is not an easy book. It's dark and brimming with angst. It deals with drug abuse and self-destructive behavior. There are two scenes that are dub-con, verging on non-con.

And there's Azariah. To say he doesn't make good choices is an understatement. Z isn't nice; his sarcasm is sharp and caustic. He's cruel to Connelly and metaphorically spits on him time and again.

Connelly isn't entirely honest with Z, but I didn't blame him for that, not with Z being such a wild card.

Broke and behind on his rent, Z pulls away from his friends and doesn't trust Connelly enough to be real with him.

Meanwhile, Connelly is enabling his sister, who's all tangled up with her abusive ex-husband and unwilling to do things for herself.

He and his partner Raoul (who is awesome but, sadly, straight) also begin an impromptu investigation at the club where the Sassy Boyz dance, and inadvertently get Lirim, one of the Boyz, in trouble (mind you, I didn't feel sorry for Lirim, not even a little; he brought that on himself).

Be warned: Azariah's behavior around the 63 to 70 percent mark is brutal and inexcusable. Z acts with reckless, selfish abandon, putting himself and Connelly at risk. It almost ruined the story for me. Almost.

But how could I not forgive Z when Connelly does? Because this book is told in a dual POV, we can see inside Z's head, and it's a frantic, painful experience. The scene where Z is powerful and symbolic of a new beginning.

Within the hurt lurks comfort. Within the darkness lurks tenderness.

I loved the connection between Connelly and Z; these two are so right together when Z lets go and gives in. The romance is subtle and fragile, but it's there.

This book can be read as a standalone, but this series feels like a collective. The Sassy Boyz are a unit, and we see Ansel and Fitch from book 1 here living their HEA.

The MCs haven't known each other long when the book ends, although it feels like forever. The ending is a HFN, but we're left with love. And a little bit of hope.

"Azariah's fingers tightened in Connelly's hair and pulled . . . "Will you give me the stars again?"

"Oh, baby, I'll give you the whole fucking galaxy."

I love, love, love Elizabeth Varlet! Her writing style is just my favorite!

I absolutely adored Fierce & Fabulous and I couldn't wait to read the second book in this series. The waiting drove me crazy! So to say I was surprised when I received the ARC via NetGalley is an understatement.

At first I read the the first two or three free chapters on the author's page. Reading the beginning of this story made me crazy with the need to read more. The beginning of this story is HOT, with just the right amount of hotness and mystery, to make you want for more! I was dying to see how Hot Fudge will give into Azariah's beauty and sassiness.

Azariah/ Z wears the scars of his past in his soul. He wants to prove to himself that he can make his own future, he fights so bad to be independent. When he's not dancing with the Sassy Boys, he works as a waiter in a restaurant where he meets Connelly.

Connely is not so out and proud because he works in the police department. But seeing Z wearing makeup and heels makes him want to get to know him better. The attraction was HUGE and Z's smart mouth made me love this story more.

Why is this story named "DARK"? Because Z makes some rushed and painful decisions and I was afraid he'll end up hurt and broken. Unfortunately I was right. I didn't approve his behavior, but he felt he didn't have any choice.

Just like Ansel in the first book, Z doesn't believe in relationships, even he feels something powerful for Connelly. He feels he doesn't have the right to happiness and this broke my heart.
On the other hand I was surprised by Connelly's kindness. He wanted to help Z and even if he also made me SO mad at one point, by keeping Z in the darkness about the investigations, I got to accept his choices.
I am sorry only because they both fought their feeling for too long. I couldn't wait to see them give in!

I loved the dual POV and the way the author described Z's breakdown. Her talent is undeniable!

I can't wait to read more!

I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange of an honest review.

Dark & Dazzling is the second book in the Sassy Boyz series and once again I was blown away! Elizabeth Varlet sure knows how to write M/M romances unlike ANY other’s that I have previously read. I can HONESTLY say SHE IS MY FAVORITE M/M romance author! Why you ask? Because her characters are SO fleshed out, so much so that I can’t help but get emotionally attached to them during the course of reading her books.

Azariah has had a rough life, losing his mother at an early age and then tossed into living with an Aunt and Uncle who basically ignored him. He ends up running and living on the streets doing unthinkable acts just get by. Azariah is the dark character of this book. He does not believe in love and does not feel he deserves it. He does not trust easily and has a hard time asking for help when needed.

Connelly was my favorite character of this read. He’s a homicide detective and is best friends with his partner Raoul. Connelly is strong, protective, caring and always wanting to help the people he loves most, even if they aren’t asking for help.

They met at a diner that Azariah was working at as a waiter. One day while Connelly was on his way to the diner for lunch, he sees Azariah in full makeup and heels. He is so stunned by what he sees that they actually run right into each other. And then it happened, they kissed right then and there. A kiss neither one of them could easily forget about.

On Connelly’s birthday, Raoul take’s Connelly out to The Vibe, a gay bar where Azariah also works at dancing on stage with his best friends The Sassy Boyz. Once Connelly sets his eyes on Azariah, he can’t look away. It does not take these two long before they hook up and let me tell you that when they do, it’s SMOKING HOT and EXPLOSIVE! Connelly is very much wanting to see where things could go between them but time and time again, Azariah pushes him away which drove me bat shit crazy!

Part of this story revolves around Connelly and Raoul investigating drug sales that are going down at The Vibe. There is also some extra drama that has to do with Connelly’s sister and her X-husband. These two things figured into the story-line nicely and kept me turning the pages.

It’s not until near the end that Azariah realizes just how much Connelly means to him. This was a very exciting part of the story. I LOVED that Azariah was there for Connelly just when he really needed him the most.

In the end I find myself wondering where The Sassy Boyz will be performing at since The Vibe is currently shut down. I’m so looking forwards to finding that out and also what Sassy Boyz member’s story we will get next.

Dark & Dazzling is very, very dark and not all that dazzling.

We were introduced to Azariah "Z" Hayes in Fierce & Fabulous (Sassy Boyz, #1) . We already know he is from the streets and he and his three dancing partners at The Vibe (The Sassy Boyz) are family. Not by blood, but by choice. Z is the dark one. The one who chooses pride over everything else. He's a tough nut to crack.

Dark & Dazzling is Z and Detective Connelly's book. Z is as dark as ever and we meet Connelly, a police detective who is so good his nickname is Boy Scout. He is always helping those less fortunate, always on-call for his sister who is raising two boys on her own, ready to lend a helping hand. He is truly a knight in shining armor. I loved him.

But Z? I never did warm to him. Not even a little bit. He was harsh and hurtful and consumed with self-honor above all else. While Connelly is portrayed as absolutely smitten by Z, I never did understand where the attraction came from. I was lost in trying to find Z's redeeming qualities.

Fierce & Fabulous was such an absolute delight. One of the many aspects I loved about it was the interaction between the 4 Sassy Boyz. In Dark & Dazzling we see them sporadically and in very small doses. I missed the love, comradery and snarkiness they shared. I hoped for more Sassy Boyz in this book, but we really didn't get it. I also loved the romance of Fitch and Ansel and their ridiculously hot sex. I found no romance with Connelly and Z and the sex paled in comparison to Fierce & Fabulous.

Now, this is a dark book, and I knew that going in. I can and do enjoy dark books, but there must be a spectacular payoff after dealing with the depression. Some examples of dark and depressing books I love are Lynn Kelling's Arctic Absolution , Varian Krylov's Dangerously Happy and Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux's Warrior's Cross . I also knew Z was a tough character. I can do tough characters with little to no redeeming qualities, but their must be redemption. Yes, Z figures things out and falls in love with Connelly in the end, but it wasn't redemption for me. It didn't feel real and there was no groveling, which I believed was necessary after what he put Connelly through.

There is also a matter of just how dark this book gets. There is no trigger warning in the description, so I will put this under a spoiler tag:

I don't think it is any secret that I wanted to love this book. I adored Fierce & Fabulous and was pulling-at-the-leash to read Dark & Dazzling. But this one wasn't for me. I just plain didn't like Z and because of that the sex and love and romance went out the window.

I look forward to the next book in the series and hope it mirrors Fierce & Fabulous more than Dark & Dazzling.

Cannot recommend.

*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

I've recently been a sobbing mess, so I'm going to keep my review short and to the point and try to control my ramblings.

This book is actually what the title says. I have to give kudos for this to the author. For both the books in this series, she has chosen perfectly apt titles. Where Ansel impressed me with his fierceness and soft pain, Azariah (I wish I knew that I pronounce it correctly!) has simply annihilated me with his dark story. God, the tears wouldn't stop. Connelly (I personally like Z's nickname for him, cause his name is quite a mouthful :-P) has been such a strong character in this, being an endless support for Z. I was a sobbing mess along with Z in that bathtub, so thank you, Connelly, for getting us both out and giving us hope.

I've fallen in love with my Sassy Boyz. Even though I had been expecting Lirim's story in the second book, now I want him to wait a little to learn from his mistakes. Until then, I would love to savour sweet Tam's story. (A huuuge hint to the author, if ever there was one ;) )

When I started reading, up to about 40%, I had this unfounded frustration inside me. Maybe it was because the story wasn't going where my sensitive heart wanted it to go, or more likely it was because I had been hyped up on three cups of tea! :-D But I'm glad that I didn't let it get to me. It's a very strong story. A valiant job by the author considering she is relatively new to writing.

There were a few typos, which I'm sure the editor will pluck out like the weeds they are. But they weren't so in-my-face to be of a huge issue to me.

I can't wait for the next book. I wish I could get into the author's brain and read the story from there only. ;-P

Hmm, it has ended up being quite long. Damn. And here I had promised myself that I won't ramble on too long! >_<

5 Dazzling Stars

I am totally addicted to this series. I love these sexy men that Elizabeth Varlet has created, The Sassy Boyz, who are not afraid to let their sparkle shine or as in this book dazzle us with darkness. These men are complex characters who have had tragic pasts and who have formed their own family and support system. In addition, they know how to dance their asses off in heels and sexy clothes while sexing up the crowd and shakin' their asses to the beat!

heels

This is book two in the Sassy Boyz Series and it is another gripping tale told by the talented Ms. Varlet. While this is book two in a series, it is a full story on its own and can be enjoyed as a standalone; however, I really think you should read the books in order as the books connect nicely and so far in each story we learn things about the men who make up the Sassy Boyz. In the first book, Fierce & Fabulous , when I was first introduced to Z, my impression of him was - standoff-ish, melodramatic, broody man. I admit he wasn't my favorite person in book one of the series. Now, in this story we learn what makes Z tick and it isn't a pretty story.

tumblr_nzi7ugydgg1tgd29zo1_500

Azariah "Z" Hayes, he is a man I came to fully understand and love - which is a big jump from my impression of him in book one.  He is a man who has lived hard, had a hard life, and is struggling to stay afloat in a world that is unforgiving and relentless. He has a darker feel than is fellow Sassy Boy, Anzel from Book one - and although its shocking at first, we find out why through the story and it all makes sense.  Then we have  Connelly Reid an NYPD detective who is drawn to Z and who wants to protect him and care for him and of course he wants to f*ck him. There is no lack of attraction between these two - that is for sure.  Connelly is attracted to Z in heels, in jeans, with his hair up or with his hair down - simply Connelly finds Z dazzling!

I admit my first impression of this book was "wow, that was nothing like book one" but then after thinking about it - I get why this book had to be darker. Grittier. Emotional. Raw. But I still loved it. Every. Single. Word. These two MC that Ms. Varlet brings together in this story probably couldn't be more unalike in every way but the one that matters - they fit each other.  They just work. In the end, isn't that all that really matters?  I highly recommend this series and this book - you won't be disappointed!  I cannot wait now to see which Sassy Boy member we get to read about next.. these guys are quickly becoming a favorite!

I'm renaming this thing Tempermental & Tarty because it's more apropos. And p.s. when the hell are one of these Sassy Boyz actually going to be sassy?

This is almost a carbon copy of Fierce & Fabulous in plot which annoys me with its lack of creativity. Not as much as these two characters, but still.

Z is also a Sassy Boy. He's the "dark" one which translates to he likes to wear black.

Oh, he plays at being a hard ass but it mostly comes across as posturing. He has the requisite sad backstory like all the Sassy Boyz. His making him "independent" and "standoffish". Both of which would've gone down better had he not started mooning over Connelly within minutes of meeting him. Kinda shot that "not trusting others" characterization to shit in a hurry.

As the story unfolds Z does one stupid, selfish ass thing after another most of which I was doing a good job overlooking or making excuses for until the bareback scene and its aftermath.

I almost called it a day after that shitshow of epic melodramatic proportions.

But I wanted to see if Connelly could somehow inject, borrow or have surgically implanted a spine and stop being such a fucking doormat.

Answer: NO.

I also was curious if Z would pull his head out and realize what a selfish prick he was being in the face of nothing but kindness.

Answer: Sorta.

He still somehow managed to make it all about him and Connelly managed to apologize FOR BEING NICE!!!!!!!!!!

The sex is pretty hot. I just wish the two fucktards having it weren't... well, fucktards!

I keep waffling between 1-2 stars but the fact that they never really talked their shit out instead opting to bang and snuggle then spouted some cockamamie BS about unicorns and rainbows and picket fences...

If you dig instalove romance betwixt two people who are craycraybenaynay and have pegged the speedometer for Melodrama Central that's perpetrating as hurt/comfort then this is the book for you.

The saddest part is I already bought the next one because I really like Tam but now I'm shit skerd to read it, because what if it's Drama Llamasville Part Trois? *wilts*

4.25 Stars!

Azariah "Z" Hayes, like the other Sassy Boyz, has known hardship and has been through enough to know that he can only depend on himself. He has recently lost his roommate and is on the verge of losing his apartment. He works as a waiter and gets his boss Sal to give him more hours but still it won't be enough. Dancing is his escape and his other source of income. He and the Sassy Boyz dance at a club called Vibe and then do some more private dancing after their routine for tips. But it's still not enough and things only get worse for Z when he twists his ankle and is unable to dance and get those extra tips he so desperately needs. In the mist of all this he has a detective hot on his heels that see's through his walls and see's the real Z and Z doesn't want to let Con in. He doesn't know how to trust the affection and words that Con showers on him.
I absolutely loved Z. He is probably my favorite character. I admire his stubbornness and how he so badly wants to stand on his own two feet. I think I relate to his character more because pride is hard to put aside when you've taken care of yourself for so long and haven't had many to lean on. The lengths he goes to for those he does love is bottomless. And boy does he put himself in an awful position for one of them. I kept screaming at him through my Kindle, "NOOOOOO!!!!". Of course Z doesn't listen to anyone and thinks he can handle everything. But even he had a breaking point and his breaking point broke a bit of my heart. He is one of those characters you wish you could hug.

Connelly Reid is a gay NYPD detective. He has a White Knight complex and can't help himself from wanting to 'fix' things for those he is close to. He runs to his sister's rescue over small things that she should be able to handle herself. But after an abusive marriage she isn't as strong as she use to be so she depends on her brother a lot when her and her two boys need things. Connelly doesn't mind but does get frustrated at times when he has to drop what he is doing to come to her rescue over simple things.
Con struggles with his job. More like he struggles with being a gay cop. He's been out since a young age but has learned the hard way that in his profession that the less people know the better off he was. He doesn't hide his sexuality but nor does he flaunt it. Though that might be a problem when he sets his sights on his favorite waiter Azariah. Though the attraction doesn't take off until he literally runs into Z all made up in front of the resturaunt Z works at and Con is a constant lunch customer. Heels, makeup, and all that sass has Con wanting more. Once he spots Z on stage at the club Vibe dancing he's a complete gonner. The problem is he knows being seen with the dark angel that is Azariah will only bring attention to him and his sexuality. But he can't stay away. But soon bad choices and decisions ruin the trust he has been slowly building with Z and things fall apart around them both.

This one really pulls at the heart and breaks it just a bit. I loved it. These two both had struggles they had to overcome within themselves and together. They fought hard for themselves and for their relationship. It ended just how it should have. It was a definite HEA for me.

Happy reading dolls! xx

"You take what you want and give only what you're willing to lose."

Pride. That is the biggest conflict in this book. Z's pride.

He's a realist, he says. People will eventually let you down and leave you, he says. Relying on someone else and asking for help makes you weak, he says.

And Connelly....well, he's a helper and a fixer. A detective who needs to solve every case, a brother who drops everything to help his sister...a man who admires Z's fierce strength and independence and just wants to be let in.

While I loved Z and Connelly together, I didn't feel the magic and butterflies like I did with the first book. I'm not sure if it's because the two men don't really spend that much time together? The book takes place over the course of two weeks and I think Z and Connelly were together maybe a handful of times (they were sexy though). The connection between them is there, but I just didn't get that spark...that popping sizzle.

The book is a mixture of their relationship and Z working through his shit....which let me tell you, his life is in shambles. Both men make some bad decisions along the way, but with the dual POV I was able to understand their reasoning behind those decisions. I may not have agreed with them, but I understood why they felt they needed to do it.

This book rode the edge of frustration without actually going over, so I have to give the author credit for that.

With everything that went down in this book, I'm curious what's in store for the Sassy Boyz. I'm not sure who's book is up next, but I'm anxiously awaiting Tam's book. He caught my attention in the first book and he just keeps intriguing me. I have a feeling there's some serious potential for a fantastic hurt/comfort read.

***I debated on whether to round this up or down for quite a while. Ultimately, the overuse of Z's nickname for Connelly (Hot Fudge) really began to annoy me about halfway through. I thought it was cute at first (Connelly always orders a hot fudge sundae for dessert at the diner Z works at ), but then it began to be too much. Also, I felt there were a few instances where it was used at the wrong time, or felt too awkward for that particular scene.

Well....despite my hesitancies I am really glad I ended up reading this one.

Was it super hard to read at times? Absolutely. Z was fiercely independent and prideful and because of that his decisions were a bit self-destructive. And that's just hard to read about.

But I loved Connelly and his protective, sometimes meddling ways. He just wanted to help Z, boy scout that he was.

There are definitely aspects in this book people will not like and it won't be for everyone. But I was super proud of Z and his journey and the growth he showed throughout the book.

I'm glad I gave this one a go.

Pre-Review Disclaimer: I will not apologize because I loved this book but I will warn you, there are probably wayyyy too many quotes and gifs in this review.

5 Sexy Stars from me - this book was everything I wanted and more! I honestly wasn't sure if I loved or hated Azariah, but that sassy bitch killed it even without the heels.

When I sat down to read Dark & Dazzling I was both uncontrollably excited and afraid. The first book in the Sassy Boyz series (Fierce & Fabulous) made my top 10 of 2016 list before the end of chapter 5, so I was very aware of what Elizabeth Varlet was capable of as an author. I was also afraid to read it in case it didn't live up to my expectations (lets face it, Ansel's pretty hard to beat).

dreamstime_m_5802145

But Azariah Hayes, better known as "Z", was an amazing and strong character in his own right.

He'd never dated someone whose mere presence simply demanded attention.

From the very first introduction of this character in Fierce & Fabulous, I knew I wanted to read his story (I did not, however, anticipate it being the next book in the series). Azariah was anything but ordinary and his friendship with Ansel was so important in the first book that I wanted to know him as more than just a supporting character.

From the get-go, it was clear that loss and heartbreak were major influences on who Z had chosen to be.

He'd loved those moments with his mom. Watching her put on her makeup and eventually getting up the courage to ask her to do his. The first time she'd rouged up his cheeks he'd felt like a princess and the way she'd smiled at him-it was like he was her entire life. Her everything.

32d41d6c161e8312d78a68eec9db4132

Z hid behind his sarcasm and quick wit, making sure that who he really was and how he felt were concealed from obvious sight. He'd somehow found a way to use being an asshole as a defense mechanism to protect himself. His flaws, and he had a lot of them, were part of what made him so relatable and lovable as a character, even though I wanted to rip my hair out at times.

tumblr_n929pehKyo1takd4ro1_400

Despite all odds being against him, he'd built a family with the Sassy Boyz, and dancing had become not only a source distraction and income, but also an emotional crutch.

Being onstage was a form of worship for him. His way of giving thanks, even though he rarely had much to be thankful for. It made his soul purr.

tumblr_mmmevzixZm1rpd1oco5_500

I loved the relationship that these boys shared, and I was actually a little disappointed that I didn't get to see more interaction between them. I think their familial bond and sassy banter with each other was one of my favorite parts of the first book, and now I'm holding out hope that the third book will have more of that in it.

Plus, I'd love to get more insight into Ansel and Azariah's lives (even though their books are over).

In his heart, there was only Azariah's aching vulnerability and the certainty no one else had ever seen it-because if they had, they never would have let Azariah go.

Z wasn't ashamed of who he was, and he was only afraid to pursue what he wanted if it meant he'd lose something he couldn't be without. And Detective Connolly Reid scared the shit out of him.

chris wood

Connelly was the white-knight type of character and I fell in love with him immediately. I wish that were saying something, but I always love the detective MC's (despite really disliking mystery books). Reid was loyal, intelligent, and protective, the perfect detective, but he was also more than that.

There were two types of people in the world, those who hurt you and those who changed you. Z knew without a doubt that Connelly was going to be both.

Connelly challenged Z in a way that nobody else could. He took the focus off of his failures and redirected his attention to what could be if he let it. These two were honestly so cute together that it was plain sickening at times (and don't get me started on the nicknames).

"Make me feel good again, Hot Fudge. Make me feel alive."

Reading about these two together was like fire. The chemistry was all there (and they both knew it) but they spent so much time fighting their feelings and fighting each other because it just "couldn't" happen that I actually thought we were going to go off script and there would be no HEA for Azariah... Which, was actually upsetting because I'd kind of grown attached to him already, the little shit.

Z had put a lot of time and effort into safeguarding is heart and building up those walls so high that nobody would ever see over them, much less get close enough to make him feel.

"Give it to me," Connelly said. Then, with everything in his heart, he whispered,"Give me that part of you no one else has seen." The sob that escaped Azariah's lips was full of denial.

"Come on, Azariah. Please."

And Connelly completely broke him down until Z didn't even know what a barrier was.

kvWe1Ve

Love isn't about dependence or independence. It's about support. It's about wanting to see someone else smile more than you want to breathe.

Aaannnddd then he had to go and screw up (but we all saw that coming anyways). I was so hopeful and frustrated with Azariah throughout the book (it was a little like a roller coaster actually) that I think I was very lenient on my judgement of Connelly. But he had some major flaws too, and his seemingly justifiable mistakes didn't seem so clean cut when the consequences had the potential to destroy everything he'd worked so hard for.

Azariah growled in frustration. "Why won't you just leave me alone?"

"Because I like you, you asshole."

I was actually really surprised that he put up with Z the way he did. Despite not being a perfect person, Connolly didn't treat him like he was the scum of the earth or like he didn't want him because he was imperfect, and I think that's the perfect example of why these two MC's work so well together.

This book was a complete joy to read, and definitely worthy of a top 10 award. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. The next book can't come soon enough, and oh, do I hope we get to read about Tam next.

Sigh ... what a hot mess of a book. I realize I'm probably in the minority here at Goodreads, but honestly? It was a major let-down from the first book in the series Fierce & Fabulous which I thought was all kinds of sexy and .... well, fierce ... and okay, fabulous.

Detective Connelly Reid is out (but doesn't seem to be terribly proud) and has a nickname of "Boy Scout" at the precinct, while Azariah "Z" Hayes calls him "Hot Fudge" because he orders a hot fudge sundae everyday at Sal's Place where Z works as a waiter. Z along with Ansel, Tam and Liram, comprise the Sassy Boyz who perform at the gay club Vibe. Z 's byword is "pride" and he's not big on asking for help.

Z and Connelly figure prominently in a plot that has a bit of everything -- sexy dancing to ... except romance. Connelly and Z have sex - sizzling hot sex - but compared to the relationship between Fitch and Ansel in Fierce & Fabulous it was difficult to get the attraction between Connelly and Z.

But beyond that, I just could not get past the PURPLE prose in this book -as purple as Z's take-no-prisoners purple stiletto boots:

Z's eyes are not dark, they are ONYX

it's not just a kiss, it's a "life-giving kiss that had the power to heal all of Z’s scars, even the ones he’d been carrying around since childhood."

It's not sex, it's love, and "when love hit you like a freight train and destiny held you by the balls it was stupid to resist."

Connelly tastes good, no ...
"... the guy tasted divine. What the hell was that? Peaches? Damn it all to hell, now he’d never be able to eat the fruit without thinking of Connelly. If he was giving up one of his favorite foods for the rest of his life, the night better be fucking worth it." and "Z vowed to give up every fucking fruit known to man—if only the night would last forever."
It appears the next book may be about Liram, and BTW two new minor characters have been introduced to the Sassy Boyz group - Hop and Jae. I'm hoping the next book is not as dark (darkly purple?), and just a bit more fabulous!

I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve read a lot of reviews that say this second installment is dark. Way darker than the first one in the series. And for the first half of this story I didn’t get it. It didn’t feel all that dark at all, and I was enjoying it.

But then in the second half all the anger and relationship angst happened. And I didn’t like it.

I also read about dub-con/non-con, but no details, so I was prepared. But I also thought the non-con would happen And I was more okay with what happened than I thought beforehand.

But the thing that bothered me the most was how both Connelly and Azariah acted towards each other. I truly disliked Connelly and his need to fix everything. That would have been okay, if Azariah wanted that too, but Connelly fixed things behind Azariah’s back. And of course Azariah refused to ask for help, and got into more trouble because of it. Both stubborn in their own way, and I couldn’t help but think they just needed to talk more.

By the end of the book I wasn’t a big fan of either Connelly or Azariah.

I was prepared to hate this, which I didn’t. But I also didn’t really like it that much. It was okay, but if the rest of the books are like this, I’m going to quit and just cherish the first book.

I found this to be a grittier and more emotionally draining story than its predecessor Fierce & Fabulous. I felt more, which is always a good thing in my books.

Azariah (Z) is a character who pulled me into his proud and determined headspace from the beginning, and kept a tight grip on me even when he faltered and became scared, hopeless and heartbroken. I felt so much for this guy. Sorrow, anger, disbelief, heartache, respect – he demanded (and deserved) it all. To say that Z made some not-so-good choices along the way would be an understatement, but due to the great writing and overall impressive character development, I was able to not only accept his behaviour and attitude, but I was also able to understand and support his choices. His pride stopped him from seeking help when he most needed it, but like Connelly said to him in a moment of incredible support and acceptance, “no one has the right to judge you for how you choose to survive.”

Connelly was your typical white-knight character, coming in and (trying to) save the day for the damsel in distress – Don’t tell Z I referred to him as a damsel in distress, he’d probably bitch slap me. I liked Connelly. Although he interfered and wasn’t completely upfront about some things with Z, he did everything with the best intentions. He showed himself to be a truly great man, by continually offering his emotional support to Z – sometimes even past the point that Z was worthy of it.

At every turn Z fought and struggled with his feelings for Connelly, but I ultimately liked the way this story didn’t quite present as your typical M/M romance. For me, this was more about Z and his personal journey, and then the romance/love/sex aspect was just delicious icing on the cake. It may have been more angst ridden than Ansel’s story, and there may have been many a trigger moment throughout the story, but it had to be this way in order to tell Z’s story right. But never fear, he and Connelly get a sweet HEA in the end (or a HFN, at the very least) that makes it all worth it.

“I’m not sure I know what love is, but if I do, it’s because of you. I always thought that I was above it. That love was a weakness for people who needed to depend on others for their happiness. I was wrong. Love isn’t about dependence or independence. It’s about support. It’s about wanting to see someone else smile more than you want to breathe. I’d die to see your smile.”

I'm very much looking forward to reading more about these Sassy Boyz!!

Definitely dark, this was more harsh than the first story, but like Fierce & Fabulous, it all starts with a kiss - a kiss that ignites and doesn’t let go.

Connelly is a cop and has white knight syndrome, ready to come to the rescue for anyone who needs aid. He has admired Azaria from afar, sees his strength and knows there are some secret struggles going on… he just wants to help to show he cares. When they act on their mutual attraction, it’s so very hard for Connelly to restrain himself from stepping in to save the day.

As expected, Azaria is tough and independent and wants to show himself and others that he can take care of his own shit. Show no weakness - that’s his mantra. Problem is, his pride is so stubborn and willful in refusing to ask for help, it unfortunately leads to very unpleasant things.

It’s no surprise these guys come together explosively, while somewhat obliviously perpetuating their problems into awful consequences. They will need to learn some harsh truths about themselves in order to have an actual relationship with the other. The road is rocky, for sure.

Of note, there’s a consistent theme running throughout this series. No doubt, there’s insta-love. One MC is strong and stable - literally and figuratively. He’s kinda the more alpha type, smitten and ready to commit whole heartedly once he’s had a taste. Thing is, the other MC has had it rough in life, doesn’t think a happy ending is possible for a guy like him and fights his attraction over and over. These things could get stale or old fast, but Varlet pretty much handles it with great writing as she brings on the tough feels, as well as treating us to some delicious smex.

So yes, in a lot of ways this was like Fierce & Fabulous, but it had its own grittier take on the above, which actually made me like it more despite the angst and pain. Obviously, I look forward to the next installment despite the probable similarities that are sure to come. However, I embrace this series for what it is, so I’m ready for the next chapter!!

I think if I see the guy in the black jacket one more time on the cover of another mm romance I'm going to scream!
Now I took that out of my chest, let's get to the review.
Nobody does angst like The Sazzy Boyz, people!
This book was ok. I'd have liked it even more hadn't I found it very similar to the first one in the series.
Z was the darker version of Ansel and Con the gay version of Finch. Femme guy meets amazing butch guy, they fall instantly in love. Femme guy gets evicted from his apartment cause he spends all his extra money on shoes and makeup and doesn't have any savings for a rainy day.
Even with all this, I enjoyed the book. I was so happy that Castor finally got what he deserved. My heart broke for Z when he had to do what he had to do in order to keep a roof over his head and help his friend.
Con was amazing. I liked him a lot.
Summary: if you liked Ansel's book, you are going to like this one.

En realidad sería un 2.5. Es dificil que se disfrute una historia cuando los dos personajes principales te caen como una patada en el hígado, absolutamente OTT, los dos.

There really wasn't much I liked about this one. Azariah was a hard character to like. He did so many self destructing things that it became tiresome to read. I honestly could not understand Connelly's attraction to him. There was never a spark for me with their relationship, in fact, I had no clue why it started in first place.
Really wish there was more sassy boys in this one. Anyways, I hope the next is better because I really liked book 1.

Darkness, angst and heartbreak are feelings that overwhelm this book; I expected it to an extent because Z was presented to us (in book #1) as dark and moody, an angel who is anything but pure and bright. Z doesn't believe in happily ever afters, rainbows, unicorns or white picket fences. Z is not made for love; his life is driven by a pride so strong and foolish, it leads him to make awful choices that he'll have to live with forever.

Z is a character that DEMANDS attention and will not let you take your focus off him for even a second. Dark & Dazzling is written from dual points of view and it's the best thing that could've happened to this book. I needed to see Z through Connelly's eyes more than anything else! Connelly showed us a different side of Z, one that would've been harder to see without his help because of all the darkness that surrounds Z at all times. Under all the sass, wit and bitter words aimed to keep people at a distance, hides a vulnerable soul who is afraid of becoming dependent of others and is terrified of finding the one person he cannot live without. Z's memories of his mother are painful but also necessary because they allow us to see what shaped Z into the man he is today.

Detective Connelly Reid is the opposite of Z, a knight is shining armor who's innate goodness makes him into a person who's loyal, a "fixer" who needs to help those he loves. I loved seeing Z through his eyes, it made it easier for me to forgive Z for his destructive and reckless behavior that took place at the 65% mark. Z almost ruined the book for me and his selfishness pissed me the fuck off. But Connelly saw him worthy of forgiveness and so did I; there's a definite moment when Z starts over, decides to change and become someone worthy of love. I liked it!

There are a couple of dub-con moments that made me feel uneasy and slightly confused. I can't say they are definite triggers and while non-con and dub-con are usually hard limits for me, I didn't feel the need the give up on this book because of them. They were just so intense, dark and angsty! And there were no warnings about them, although since this is an arc and edits can be made before it is released to the public, I truly hope the publisher will take care of this oversight.

Dark & Dazzling might not end with a definite HEA, but the HFN is pretty strong and full of optimism. Fierce & Fabulous remains my favorite book so far and I'm truly looking forward to the next books! And let me just acknowledge that Varlet can write some seriously steamy sex scenes! Phew!

Dark and Dazzling indeed. Azariah Hayes aka Z is definitely the dark one of the Sassy Boyz. Nothing in life has ever come easily for Z. He wears his armor of sass, attitude, and cynicism behind a wall made of glitter and high heels. For the most part this has worked for him. Z has survived, he’s a survivor it's all he knows how to do. Readers get to know Z at a point in his life where he has one very simple choice to make. All he has to do is ask one simple thing. He chooses to do it all on his own and things pretty much crumble from that point.
NYPD Connelly Reid has a favorite diner and his love of the place has nothing to do with the food and everything to do with a certain waiter. All it takes is one chance meeting away from that diner for Connelly to decide he has to get to know Azariah (complete with make-up, sparkle, and dazzle) better. Z is the exact opposite of all of the men in Connelly’s past except for one thing. It’s that one quality that will draw out Connelly's nature to help that will push Z away.
Z is not an easy character to warm up to. His character is perfect for this book though. So much of him made sense though. I didn’t want to like him. I wanted to throttle him when he went to Castor for some extra money. The Sassy Boyz are a family yet Z couldn’t see that his family would support him no matter what. Connelly’s is no angel either. I could have choked him as well. For a smart man he was pretty ignorant to believe that he could keep Z out of the case he was working. This all made for a great addition to this amazing series.
The second installment of Elizabeth Varlet’s Sassy Boyz series easily works as a stand-alone. Fitch and Ansel have small secondary roles here but nothing that happened in the first book carries over into this one. I’m guessing that won’t be the case for the next book though. There were several things left unanswered that will have to carry over into the next book. I’m very curious where one of the Sassy Boyz decisions will take him. Needless to say I’m looking forward to the next book.

Alot more angst then I'm willing to read. Jeez, it was hard to wade through at times.
Hmmm.... This book was a lot to take in. Z and Connelly were two completely different guys from Ansel & Fitch. I like that they were different, but goodness I would have rather the romance to just have been the focal point. You have Azariah, who will never except a handout or help. Connelly is constantly helping out. It's a clash waiting to happen. For Azariah, he's never depended on anyone and will refuse help just to not look weak or needy. That's all Connelly knows. He is the person who will help until its not fair to him anymore. They don't call him Boy Scout for nothing. I wanted him to be a lot more selfish earlier in the story. He has so much on his shoulders that he's not living life to me.

It wasn't fall in love fest like book one. I wasn't immediately smitten with these two. It took time, and work for them to payoff. I think because the plot played such a heavier influence on these two, that it was barriers put up between the two. I hope you get what I meant. Connelly's job played a bigger role in who he was. All his life he's had to help out, and be the surrogate man in his family's life since his father passed, that it is no wonder he goes for the fixer upper guys. Every single one of his ex's needed help and after getting any form of help from Connelly they bounced. I don't know if Connelly liked it that way, but he wasn't able to ever see a future with anyone because of his loyalties elsewhere. I think the chemistry between these two were electric. I like that Azariah wasn't so passive when it came to Connelly. They just seem to mesh well with one another. Azariah is a hard nut to crack. When it actuality he isn't. He's used to be on his own, and to be so young he's super cynical when it comes to love. This is a man who's only form of love died when he was 12. His mother is the only person ever in his life to see him shine, accept him, and love him unequivocally.

"I'm a realist all the way. Reality is dark and gritty and completely fucked--up."

There was a few moments that Azariah completely pissed me off. I thought he was completely selfish, but I had a hard time staying angry because Connelly was super accepted. I think he accepted it shows more to his nurturing side as well. I do felt like the plot was a bit to much at times. I wish it could have been toned down so we got more time for these two to grown and love.

It was a really good story. I enjoyed seeing more of the Sassy Boyz and can't wait to read Lirim's book next. That boy is just asking to be held and protected. I liked these two together and yeah they haven't been together that long by the end of the book, but I can see these two together for a while. Their personality just meshes well together.

My Review:
OMG, this book is all about Z for me. This kid...I want to just gather him up in my arms and take care of him and give him a safe place to love Con. Loved the two of them so much, but it's definitely Z that stole my heart.

As one of the Sassy Boyz, Z is no stranger to hardship. That's been the theme to his life. That's why he can't allow himself to get involved with Con. Con is a cop and has his life together. Z...doesn't. He's recently lost his roommate and is on the verge of losing his apartment because he physically can't make enough money to make the rent. And most guys just don't understand him and the side of him that needs makeup and the heels.

Con not only gets it, he embraces it and is turned on by Z when he's fully made up. He sees the real Z, even though Z has built up walls with everyone else. Somehow Con has sneaked under all those and gotten inside. But life isn't perfect for Con either. He's a cop and he's gay. He has a history of being harassed at work. Dating someone like Z, who can't be overlooked, isn't going to make that any easier. (Note: OMG, I adored Raoul, Con's partner, who is the best partner around...he always has Con's back...even in the midst of the harassment and I adored that about him.)

And this is not an easy book...omg, heart breaking. I felt it during the reading of this one. This book is an action packed, emotional rollercoaster ride...and I loved every minute of reading it. My heart broke, it soared, it hoped, and it cried. But in the end it celebrated because this is the way a love story should be told. I absolutely loved getting to watch Con and Z fall in love.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I think I would have liked it much more, if I hadn't read the first book in the series.

I had expected it to be somewhat different from the previous novel, so I quickly got annoyed with the fact that Dark & Dazzling pretty much followed the same formula as Fierce & Fabulous . The same knight in shining armor, the same beautiful, troubled hot mess of a guy in desperate need of saving.

The only difference for me was that this book was a bit darker and angstier, and it lacked the chemistry and emotional connection that the first one had.

I liked this one more than book one. I'm not sure just what it was, but I had more sympathy for Z than I had had with Ansel, even though most of Z's problems were caused by his own pride.

I loved Connelly though, even if he was a bit of an idiot to not tell Azariah that he'd paid his back rent for him. His whole character was unapologetically caring and he tried to do his best all the time.

I wouldn't say this one was particularly dark though, there's two scenes people have highlighted as being potential issues but I felt neither hit the non con status even if one was a little bit icky and the other was filled with angry emotions.

Either way, there's some hot sex, some angst, some dramady and a nice lot of groveling to wrap things up.

Dang... it's two o'clock in the morning... if that tells you anything! *headdesk* LOL!!!

What can I say, I couldn't put it down... it was really well-written and I spent half the time wanting to wring Azariah's and Con's neck and the other half cheering them on when they would finally get something right... ugh, they exhausted me! ;D

It had its dark moments and it had its dazzling moments... wow, those boys can still dance! *fans face* Lessons were learned and love was found... yep, in my humble opinion this wasn't just a good read... it was an excellent read! :D

Facts: Azariah was introduced in Fierce & Fabulous, Sassy Boyz #1. Dark & Dazzling follows the events of the previous book.

I could already tell that, next to Ansel, the star of Sassy Boyz #1, Azariah would be my favorite Sassy Boy. Mouthy little thing :)

Much like Ansel, Z has got attitude, is full of snark and delivers a lot of sass. He calls himself a bitch and princess. He’s strong and an amazing character. He never backs down from a challenge, loves to argue and “bitch around”.

His sarcasm and quick-wit a.k.a. aggressive charm had me captivated from the start.

He’s also angry and lonely, still mourning the loss of his beloved mother, the only person who’s ever loved him, cared for him. She’d been his hero. Like Ansel, he too has had some troubled teenage years but managed to turn his life around and now has great friends in his life and a job he loves.

Still, money is tight and trouble just around the corner.

Some of that trouble comes in the form of detective Connelly Reid.

They meet at Sal’s, the diner where Azariah waits tables and Connelly spends his lunch hours, repeatedly, after transferring to a new precinct a few weeks prior. It isn’t until he sees Azariah in his sparkly clothes, heels and make up before it really hits him: he has got to have a taste of the sexy, snarky and very intriguing waiter.

From the moment he spots Azariah on stage at The Vibe, a dance club, Connelly is completely done for. There’s no return. Knowing that getting with Azariah would be a bad decision doesn’t stop him from making a move.

Connelly has been out for a years and comfortable with his sexuality, but being a detective he had to learn the hard way: the less people saw the better. And dating someone as bright and dazzling as Azariah would definitely draw attention eventually. Well, his reasoning doesn’t keep him from following his heart for long.

But Azariah doesn’t want a relationship, he fears it would give the other person too much control, and control is something he can’t give up. Ever. He’s proud and stubborn and wouldn’t depend on anyone but himself. Even asking for help when his life starts to fall apart after his roommate disappears and he injures his foot, is an impossible thought.

Having a boyfriend or any sort of relationship is the last thing he wants.

The fact that Connelly got under his skin with a single kiss, and sees right through the armor, his barriers and hard-won defenses has him intrigued, and hooked.

He also scares the crap out of Z, but that only makes it more exciting.

A challenge.

An unthinkable shot at something more.

There were two types of people in the world, those who hurt you and those who changed you. Z knew without a doubt that Connelly was going to be both.

The beginning of their romance is wild and reckless, both are diving in headfirst, blinded by their attraction for each other. Connelly knows what he wants and he’s going for it, no holding back. Z is impressed and instantly charmed by his detective’s boldness and spellbound by their chemistry.

It’s hot and intense but there is also a touch of sweetness, no matter how little Z believes in love, happiness and safety — and having all that with another person. It’s there and it wants to grow, but he’s fighting it with all he has.

Poor choices and bad decisions are made.

No matter how many times Azariah pushes him away, Connelly doesn’t give up hope, doesn’t give up on him. He’s been enamored by the mouthy dancer from the moment he first saw him in his element, hook, line and sinker.

Azariah shines like a million dazzling stars, and he’s not giving him up.

Good thing Connelly sees that being an unforgiving asshole is only a defense mechanism to protect himself from getting hurt again. One that Z has difficulties letting go off.

Not only does Connelly care, Z also has the support of Ansel and Fitch. Despite everything, his friends give a shit about him!

Connelly and his partner Raoul also take it upon themselves to investigate drug activity in their spare time at the club The Vibe where the Sassy Boyz perform, which leads to all kinds of complications and discoveries.

****

Both, Connelly and Azariah were interesting and admirable characters. Especially Z has me wrapped around his finger.

I enjoyed their journey and hope they’ll find their happy-ever-after, soon. I wouldn’t mind to be there for it either *wink*

I greatly enjoyed the banter between Azariah and Connelly, as well as between the Sassy Boyz — those were some of my favorite moments in both books.

What did bother me at times was the overuse of “lover” instead of the person’s name. It’s something I personally don’t like very much.

Also, so many scenes were cut into short chapters, changing POV’s each time.

I would have preferred to stay with one person’s POV for longer -> starting and finishing a scene in the same POV, more or less. With the many switches I felt the characters kind of blended into each other, making their voices less distinct.

The writing overall is impressive. And while I found the sex scenes quite awesome, they get kind of boring when there’s so many of them. Same goes for book #1, unfortunately.

Many, many thanks to the publisher who kindly provided a free copy for an honest and impartial review.
