As a vision mixer for a multicam production, the narrator was responsible for controlling which camera feed was live. They had to communicate with camera operators to ensure clean shots and watch the speakers' mouths to determine who was talking. Due to equipment issues, the narrator had to relearn a new vision mixing system. They set up three cameras with different angles and could switch between them using labeled buttons. Effective communication between crew members could have helped issues like microphones in shots be addressed more smoothly.

Vision mixer

In our multicam production my role was the vision mixer as a vision mixer I was in control of
what camera was live. In order to do this I worked with the camera men making sure that they
kept clean shots. On the day of the production I needed to completely relearn how to use the
new vision mixer as the one before it stopped working. For the production we set up three
cameras in different angles and I could control which one was the live feed by using buttons
labelled 1, 2 and 3 these buttons represented each camera. Camera one was set up to focus on
the guest, camera two was set up to focus on both the guest and the presenter and camera
three was set up to focus on just the presenter. When setting up for the production we needed
to make sure the area was set up in a safe way, we made sure that all the loose cables where
taped down to the floor or moved out of the way and then taped down hazard tape so that it
would lower the risk of anyone falling and we also removed any objects that could get in the
way. As a vision mixer I think I done very well as I couldn’t hear when the presenter and the
guest where speaking and had to watch their mouths to determine who was speaking at what
point. I also had to communicate with camera men making sure that the kept good shots and
had to watch to see if the boom mic was in the shot or not. I also had to make sure that if
anyone looked at the camera or if the presenter looked at his notes I need to have the ability to
cut from that shot to another shot. When trying to focus on the vision mixing I also had to relay
messages from the director to the other members of the crew on wrapping up the interview
moving about so they weren’t in the shot or even getting different crew member to remember to
check audio. I believe this could have gone smoother if I had more time to get used to using the
new vision mixer and also if every member of the crew had some type of way to communicate to
each other certain issues such as boom mic getting into the shot or knowing when to wrap up
the interview would have been dealt with much easier.

Overall I believe the interview was effective and gave accurate knowledge to anyone thinking
about going into the film or media industry, the right questions were asked and the presenter
stayed engaged with the guest which allowed the interview to flow smoothly. The audio is also
very clear in the final product as I didn't hear any hiss or background noise. The lighting in the
video was effective both the presenter and the guest were lit very well as at no point in the
interview does anyone become too dark or too light. The framing of the cameras were also
effective and accurately showed how the conversation took place as one camera was set up to
focus on the presenter, one on the guest and one showing both. The way the interview cuts is
also effective as no effects were needed, the way different camera angles are mixed together
gives a smooth feel to the interview and doesn't feel rushed at some points in the video some
shots do last longer than they should but it doesn't make the interview terrible.
If this was a real interview on youtube I think I would watch it and would have any complaints
from watching the video everything looked very professional.
