INTRODUCTION

1. General
A. The instructions for continued airworthiness (ICA) in this publication uses the data available at the
time of publication. This publication is updated, supplemented, and changed by service letters,
service bulletins, publication revisions, reissues, ICA supplements, and temporary revisions, which
are supplied by subscription services available from McCauley Product Support. All of these changes
become part of and are specifically included in this publication. The latest changes to this publication
are given through the McCauley Product Support subscription services and/or McCauley authorized
service facilities.

WARNING: The purchaser is warned not to use the data in McCauley's

overhaul/maintenance/service/information manuals when parts
are designed, manufactured, remanufactured, overhauled, and/or
approved by entities, other than McCauley or McCauley authorized
entities, are installed. When non-McCauley parts are used, the
data in McCauley's overhaul/maintenance/service/information
manuals is no longer applicable. All of the inspection intervals,
replacement time limits, overhaul time limits, inspection methods,
life limits, cycle limits, etc., McCauley recommends are given
when new, remanufactured, or overhauled McCauley approved
parts are installed. All inspection intervals, replacement time
limits, overhaul time limits, the methods of inspection, life limits,
cycle limits, etc., for non-McCauley parts must come from the
manufacturer and/or seller of the non-McCauley parts.
B. Inspection, maintenance and parts requirements for Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) installations
that modify the propeller are not given in this manual. When the propeller has an STC installation,
those parts of the propeller that the installation has an effect on, must be examined in accordance with
the inspection program published by the owner of the STC. McCauley-supplied inspection criteria may
not be valid for propellers that have STC installations because they may change the systems interface,
operating characteristics and component loads or stresses on adjacent structures.

WARNING: Any inspection and/or repair requiring disassembly, reassembly or

overhaul of a McCauley propeller must be done in an FAA-approved
or international equivalent propeller repair station by qualified
personnel.
C. Users of this manual are presumed to have sufficient training to follow these instructions carefully and
correctly.
D. The inspection requirements are stated in a manner to establish what propeller component is to be
inspected, preferred inspection method, and criteria for airworthiness.
E. This manual contains overhaul instructions, test instructions and illustrated parts list for the Model
C400 Constant-Speed Propeller Assemblies manufactured by McCauley Propeller Systems.
F. Overhaul instructions are provided on a functional basis (Disassembly, Cleaning, Repair, etc.). To
the maximum extent possible, the instructions are general and apples to all C400 propellers. When
propellers differ from the general or typical propeller, different instructions as required will be identified
with the particular propeller model or subassembly part number as the case may be.
G. Additional model C400 series propellers will be incorporated in this manual by the addition of pertinent
data and the addition of the model number and detail parts to the Illustrated Parts List. Different
instructions specific for the added models will be given in the appropriate chapters.

G. This manual is available on paper and CD-ROM.

3. Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA)

A. Owner/Operator Information Manual
(1) MPC26, Owner/Operator Information Manual is the principal manual for maintenance personnel
to service, examine, troubleshoot, remove and install C400 model series propellers.
(2) Refer to the MPC26 Owner/Operator Information Manual for all C400 model series propeller
airworthiness limitation inspection time limits and airworthiness limitation replacement time limits.
B. MPC400 Propeller Overhaul Manual
(1) The instructions provided in this manual may be revised to add changes to an existing ICA or
to add an additional ICA when changes to an affected propeller type design require changes
to these instructions. When a revision to this manual is not possible within the time constraints
for these ICAs, the instructions may be transmitted with a temporary revision or with an ICA
supplement. Temporary revisions will be incorporated in the next revision to this manual and
ICA supplements will also be incorporated in the next revision unless these instructions require
restricted distribution.
C. Temporary Revisions
(1) Temporary revisions may be produced to transmit supplemental instructions for continued
airworthiness when a revision to this manual is not possible within the time constraints for the
ICA. The Temporary Revision will consist of complete page blocks which replace the existing
paper and will temporally supersede the CD-ROM data. Temporary revisions will be included on

the CD-ROM on the next CD-ROM release. Temporary revisions are numbered consecutively
in the ATA chapter assignment. Page numbering uses the three-element number, which
matches the affected manual.
(2) Paper version of the temporary revision
(a) Paper temporary revisions will be distributed on yellow paper. File the temporary revision
cover sheet after the title page of the chapter to which it applies and substitute or add the
remaining pages in the paper manual.
(3) Electronic (CD-ROM) Version of the Maintenance Manual.
(a) The cover sheet will be located in the overhaul manual at the beginning of the chapter to
which it applies and the changed or added pageblocks will be located in the appropriate
location by ATA.
D. ICA Supplements
(1) ICA supplements may be produced to transmit supplemental instructions for continued
airworthiness when a revision to the affected manual(s) is not possible within the time constraints
for the ICA. An ICA supplement will provide supplemental instructions for one or more
affected manuals and is to be used in conjunction with the affected manuals (owner/operator
information manual, overhaul manual, standard practices manual, etc.) until those instructions
are incorporated into the affected manuals. ICA supplements are numbered consecutively by
model in the ATA chapter assignment. Page numbering uses the three-element number, which
matches the affected manual.
(2) Refer to the ICA Supplement List to determine the incorporation status for each manual affected.

4. Cross Reference Listing of Popular Name Verses Model Numbers

A. All propellers are certified under model number designations. However, in this manual, reference to
specific propellers is almost always by the shortened propeller model number unless the full model
number is necessary to differentiate between versions of the same basic model.

EXAMPLE: Example: D3A34C401-X/G-90DFA-10 propeller assembly is shortened to the Hub

model designation D3A34C401 which can also be shortened to C401.

5. Propeller Model Number

A. Refer to the Propellers - Description and Operation section of this manual (Figures 1 and 2) for an
explanation of propeller model number.

MODEL C400 SERIES
OVERHAUL MANUAL

D. Information in this manual is applicable to all U.S. and Foreign Certified propellers.

7. Definitions of Propeller Servicing and Life

A. Overhaul - The periodic disassembly, inspection, reconditioning, and reassembly. The overhaul
period is generally based on hours of service (operating time) or calendar time. At such specified
times, the propeller is completely disassembled; inspected for wear, cracks, corrosion or any other
unusual or abnormal condition; parts are refinished; certain parts are replaced; and the propeller
is reassembled and balanced. At overhaul, the instructions contained in this manual, the SPM100
Standard Practices Manual, BOM100 Blade Overhaul Manual, ICA Supplements and all subsequent
necessary and required service bulletins and service letters must be followed.
B. Reconditioning - The rework of major or minor blade damage caused by erosion or striking small
objects during normal operation. Rebalancing of the propeller may be required. Reconditioning is
accomplished on an irregular basis as necessary and required.
C. Repair - The correction, on an irregular basis as necessary and required, of minor or major damage
caused by a physical mishap or failure. Minor repair may be accomplished without overhaul. The
amount, degree and extent of damage determines whether or not a propeller can be repaired without
overhaul. If there is any question, and whenever possible, overhaul should be accomplished.
D. Propeller Life - This is expressed in terms of the total hours of service (TT or Total Time) and the hours
of service since overhaul (TSO or Time Since Overhaul). Both references are necessary to define the
life of the propeller. Overhaul does not return the propeller to zero hours total time (TT), only to zero
hours since overhaul (TSO). Reconditioning or repair without overhaul has no effect on total time (TT)
or time since overhaul (TSO).

8. Temporary Revisions
A. Additional information which becomes available may be provided by temporary revision. This service
is used to provide, without delay, new information which will assist in maintaining safety. Temporary
revisions are numbered consecutively within the ATA chapter assignment. Temporary revisions are
normally incorporated into the manual at the next regularly scheduled revision.

9. Applicable Service Bulletins and Service Letters

A. Alert Service Bulletin
(1) Alert Service Bulletins are technical documents that provide instructions and, if applicable, part
information for the incorporation of an installation, modification, or repair to a specific propeller
or propeller component. Alert Service Bulletins are used to announce mandatory special
product inspection criteria and modifications, revised maintenance information and/or revised
operational information which has been determined to be critical for the continued safe and
reliable performance of the propeller, or propeller component.
B. Service Bulletin
(1) Service Bulletins are technical documents that provide instructions and, if applicable, part
information for the incorporation of an installation, modification, or repair to a specific propeller or
propeller component. Service Bulletins are used to announce special product inspection criteria
and modifications, revised maintenance information and/or revised operational information
which has been determined to be critical for the continued safe and reliable performance of the
propeller, or propeller component.
C. Service Letter
(1) Service Letters are used to announce support and service information.
D. Special Service Project
(1) Special Service Projects (SSP's) are similar to service bulletins and are used to announce
special product inspection criteria and modifications, revised maintenance information and/or
revised operational information which is intended to assist in improving propeller safety,
reliability, durability and/or performance. SSP's typically contain similar information and/or
headings as service bulletins, but are often tailored for special situations and/or conditions

MODEL C400 SERIES
OVERHAUL MANUAL

PROPELLERS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Description
A. The C400 series propellers are of the constant speed type. They are a single-acting unit in which
hydraulic pressure works against the forces of springs and the natural centrifugal moment of the
rotating blade to provide the correct pitch for engine load. Hydraulic pressure causes the blades
to move toward high pitch (decreasing RPM). The springs and centrifugal moments urge blades
toward low pitch (increasing RPM) (refer to Figure 1, C400 Series Propeller). An engine-mounted
governor of the McCauley Model C290 Series or equivalent is required for operation. No other external
components are required.
B. The source of hydraulic pressure for operation is oil from the engine lubricating system, controlled by
the engine driven governor. Pressure is supplied to the forward side of the propeller piston through
the engine shaft flange. Increasing the engine speed will cause oil to be forced into the cylinder to
move the piston with a corresponding increase in pitch. Conversely a decrease of engine speed will
result in oil leaving the cylinder, with a decrease in pitch. Flow of oil through governor and propeller
does not interfere with engine lubrication.
C. Cockpit procedure for normal constant speed operation, starting, stopping, and ground run-up is
consistent with standard practice for this type propeller.
D. A complete reduction of hydraulic pressure in flight, either by a failure in the system causing loss of
oil, or by manipulation of controls to require maximum RPM, will cause springs to automatically move
the blades to the low or minimum pitch position.

2. Definitions of Propeller Servicing and Life

NOTE: Terms used in this manual are defined as follows for propeller assembly servicing and life.
A. Overhaul
(1) The interval between overhauls of the propeller must not exceed limitations stated in McCauley
MPC26 Owner/Operator Information Manual.
(2) Overhaul is the periodic disassembly, inspection, reconditioning and reassembly of a propeller
assembly which is constructed of a number of moveable, detachable parts.
(a) The period between overhauls is based either on hours of service (operating time) or on
calender time.
(3) At specified overhaul periods:
(a) Completely disassemble propeller assembly.
(b) Inspect all parts for cracks, wear, corrosion, and other unusual or abnormal conditions.

NOTE: Refer to the Standard Practices Manual, Section 60-00-02, Inspection Criteria.

(c) Refinish or replace certain parts as specified.

(d) Balance blade and propeller assembly per Section 60-00-07 of the Standard Practices
Manual, Blade Track and Blade to Blade Balance.
(4) At overhaul, follow all applicable instructions in this manual and in later service bulletins and
letters.
B. Reconditioning
(1) Reconditioning is the rework of either minor or major damage of certain propeller components,
such as blade damage caused when small objects strike the blade during normal operation.
(a) Recondition parts as needed or required in accordance with procedures in this manual.
C. Repair
(1) Repair is the correction of either minor or major blade assembly damage.

3. Introduction
A. Propeller model number is the basic propeller assembly i.e. D3A34C401. Variations to the assembly
are specified by the "part number" i.e. P4014808-XXXX. The part number identifies a variation of the
propeller assembly by the angles, blades, paint scheme, oil-fill configuration, and deice equipment.
Part numbers which end in "-5XXX" designate propeller whose configuration was modified to oil-filled.
Refer to Figure 2.

NOTE: For a detailed description of the basic propeller assembly model number, refef to the
SPM100 Standard Practices Manual, General Information.

NOTE: The C406, C409, C420, and C423 were not originally oil-filled. In 2001, these models were
modified to the oil-fill configuration.

EXAMPLE: Part number P4014808-01 has a low blade angle of 12.4 degrees, high blade angle
of 28.5 degrees, 90DFA-10 blades, uses the D-6286 paint scheme, and is not deiced.
Part number P4014808-09 has a low blade angle of 10.0 degrees, high blade angle of
28.5 degrees, 90DFA-2 blades, uses the D-6286 paint scheme and is not deiced.

B. The Illustrated Parts List is for all part numbers of a propeller assembly.
C. Table 1 specifies blade model, installation decal, paint scheme, hub assembly, and angles for each
part number propeller.
(1) Blade model is specified in maximum diameter for a specific propeller part number application.
(2) Refer to the Standard Practices Manual, Section 60-00-06, Paint Instructions, for paint scheme
details.
(3) Angles are specific for propeller part number.
(4) Some model numbers will have two hub assemblies listed. Either assembly may be used when
assembling the propeller. Careful attention must be made to Notes for correct installation of
parts.
D. Reference the Illustrated Parts List, Table 1001, Notes, for an explanation of notes.
E. Refer to the FAA Aircraft Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) and the McCauley Application Guide

4. Oil filled Models

A. The C430, C431, C432, C433, C434, C435, C436, C442, C443, C444, and C447 propellers are
manufactured in oil filled configuration. The C406, C409, C420, and C423 models were originally
manufactured as non-oil filled but are now manufactured as oil filled. These models may only be
modified to the oil fill configuration when hub replacement is required. Replacement hubs will only be
available in an oil filled model.
(1) Identification - Oil filled propellers are identified by a letter change in the model designation
(Refer to Table 601, Change Letter Stamping Requirements). They are also identifiable by a
filler plug in the hub which is unique to the oil filled models.
(2) Interchangeability - Oil filling a propeller has no effect on the interchangeability or eligibility of
the model (e.g. an oil filled propeller can be installed on any aircraft approved for the model,
provided it meets diameter and angle specifications).

McCAULEY PROPELLER SYSTEMS
MODEL C400 SERIES
OVERHAUL MANUAL

(3) Repair of leaks - Leakage from the propeller will be indicated by presence of red oil on the
propeller, windshield, cowl, spinner, etc. Repairs require disassembly of the propeller and must
be accomplished by an FAA approved propeller repair station or international equivalent.
(4) Internal oil leak - In the event of internal O-ring leakage between propeller oil and engine oil
(from propeller governor), no problem should be encountered. Engine oil and propeller oil are
compatible. Any mixing of the two will have no harmful effects. In the worst condition (very
unlikely), the increased oil pressure in the hub could result in sluggish response to propeller
pitch change. Internal oil leaks require repair by an FAA approved propeller repair station or
international equivalent.
(5) Propeller balance - Centrifugal force acting on the rotating propeller will evenly distribute oil
and not cause an unbalanced condition. However, during start up in extreme cold, congealed
oil could cause momentary roughness. Also, oil must be drained if propeller is to be static
balanced vertically (e.g. knife-edge). Horizontal balance (e.g. suspension) does not usually
require draining of oil.
(6) De-sludging of propeller cylinder - With oil filled C400 propeller hubs, it is necessary to drain the
propeller oil prior to removing the cylinder, then refill the hub after installation of the cylinder. As
a result, de-sludging of cylinder area in the field is not recommended.
(7) Weight - Three blade oil filled propellers weigh 2.8 pounds more than their non-oil filled
counterpart.
(8) Disassembly of threadless three-blade oil filled propellers is the same as non-oil filled models
except for draining the red oil. Refer to the Disassembly section.
(9) General - The procedure for assembling a three blade oil filled propeller is the same as for non-oil
filled models except as detailed in the Assembly section.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Disassembly

NOTE: A spinner assembly may be available and used with this propeller on many aircraft. It must
be disassembled as the propeller is removed from the airplane. Parts for the spinner may
accompany the propeller. Handle them with care to prevent damage.
A. Perform disassembly and reassembly on clean surfaces. Handle and store removed parts with care
so that damage does not occur, particularly to the highly finished working surfaces, and so that dirt is
not admitted to the clearances between parts not disassembled but which must be loosened.

NOTE: All decals must be removed in order to permit thorough inspection of parts to which they
are attached. Decals may be removed before, during, or after disassembly using paint
remover (Refer to Standard Practices Manual, 60-00-10, Consumable Material). Apply
paint remover to decal and allow it to remain until blistering begins. Then, wipe off decal
and all traces of paint remover.
B. Refer to the Illustrated Parts List for all index numbers.

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses represent index numbers for parts called out in the instructions
(Refer to the Illustrated Parts List.).

2. Disassembly of Propeller
A. Mount the propeller assembly on a stand.
B. Disassemble Propeller
(1) On oil filled models, remove the fill plug and drain the oil into a suitable container.
(2) Apply blade wrap to cover at least six inches (15 mm) of each blade outward from the hub.
(3) Model C410, remove balance weights and brackets from blades. Discard gaskets (3) and
balance weight attaching screws (7).
(4) Remove screws (18), tubes, (22), cylinder mounting ring (21), that secure the cylinder (24) to
the hub.
(a) Discard the screws (19).
(5) On oil filled models, remove and discard the screws (19 and 20).
(6) Pull the cylinder (24) off the hub.
(7) Remove gasket (25) and discard.
(8) By hand, rotate the blades toward low pitch. This will force the piston (33) forward.
(9) Insert the B-4092-1 roll pin tool into the hub opening.
(10) While you support the piston, drive out the roll pins (35) that secure the piston rod pins (34) to
the piston (33).
(11) Remove the piston rod pins (34) from the piston (33) and link (36).
(12) Rotate the blades toward high pitch until the links (36) are approximately half way out of the
piston slots.
(13) Grasp the piston and remove it and all attached parts from the hub.

WARNING: The spring is compressed and incorrect disassembly could

cause injury.
(14) Put the piston aside for later disassembly. Refer to Disassembly of Components.
(15) On oil filled models, remove the lockwire from the actuating pin assembly (42) screws (45).
(16) Remove the screws (45) that secure the actuating pin assembly (42) to the blade butt.
(17) Carefully remove the actuating pin assembly (42) from the blade butt with the link still attached.
(18) Blade Removal
(a) Rotate propeller so that a blade is down. Hold and manipulate the blade while the retention
parts are loosened and the bearing is removed.

CAUTION: Make sure the blade butt is up and the blade is pointing down
when the retaining ring is removed. The butt could fall into the
hub, and be damaged or damage the other blades.
(b) Use a Snap-On PR8, or equivalent, pliers to release the retaining ring (49) from the groove
in the blade butt. (Refer to Figure 301).
(c) Make sure the blade is protected with blade wrap at least six inches (150 mm) from the
hub outward.
(d) Move carrier (50), shims (46 and 47), wire ring (48), and retaining ring (49) down and
temporarily secure along the blade shank.
(e) Remove split retainer halves (54) through the front hub opening as follows:

NOTE: In addition to moving the blade butt within the hub, the split retainer halves must
be simultaneously rotated and manipulated for release from the blade butt and
withdrawal from the hub.

1 Raise the blade butt into hub approximately 0.5 to 1 inch (13 to 26 mm).
2 If the bearing race (57) adheres to the split retainer halves (54), tap the retainer ring
halves with a plastic rod to break them free.

NOTE: When done properly, the split retainer can be removed by hand without
using any force.

NOTE: Split retainers (54) are manufactured in matched sets and identified by
serial numbers etched on each retainer half. Keep matched sets together
when disassembling. It is important that retainers have matching serial
numbers when installed on a propeller blade. If they do not, dimensional
variations between the two retainer halves could result in stresses being
concentrated on only one retainer half instead of being evenly distributed.

CAUTION: If you feel any resistance while attempting removal, return

the ring half to its original position and start over. Any
attempt to force or pry out the ring will only wedge it in
tighter and cause damage.
3 While you hold the blade up, grasp either retainer half at the center of its arc and
rotate it upward.

NOTE: Alternately, put a small magnet on the center of the arc of the retainer half
and rotate it up and off the butt.

4 When the split retainer ends clear the blade neck, work the split retainer half up over
the end of blade butt and withdraw it from the hub.
5 Remove the other half of the split retainer in the same manner.
6 Remove the blade from the hub.
(f) Position the inner race against the outer race and temporarily clamp in place with spatulas
and rubber bands as shown in Figure 302.
(g) Repeat the steps necessary for the other blades.
(h) Remove the shim carrier (50), shims (46, 47), and retainer (49) from the blade shank.
Remove the O-ring (53) from the blade shank.
1 Discard the O-rings.
(i) Measure and record shim thicknesses on a tag attached to the carrier with which it was
used.
(j) Record the blade and hub serial numbers and the hub socket number.
(k) Protect the blade during handling and storage with blade wrap or a sack and blade butt
protector.
(l) Remove and discard balls (55) and separators (56) from the bearing race.

(19) Bearing Race Removal.

NOTE: The following procedure is for one set of bearing races.

CAUTION: Be extremely careful when you remove the bearing races from the
hub. If the races scratch or dent the hub at the slots, cracks will
develop from this damage.
(a) Remove the clamp used to hold the inner bearing race.
1 While it is still in the hub, tag the inner bearing races (57) to correspond to hub socket
in which it is used.
2 Remove the race through the slots in the hub front opening.
3 It will be necessary to rotate the inner race so that it can be removed through the
slots.

NOTE: Bearing races are manufactured in pairs and may or may not be identified
as pairs by serial number. Therefore, they must be identified as sets before
removal from the hub. Bearing races must be used as serialized or matched
pairs.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to pry or use any metal tool to remove the outer
race.
(b) Place shop cloths in the hub so that outer race does not fall down and damage itself or the
hub when loosened.
(c) Use a soft, wedge-shaped tool (fabricated from nylon or other plastic material) and tap
lightly around the perimeter to loosen the outer bearing race (57).
(d) Tag and remove the outer race from hub in the same manner as the inner race.
(e) Store with it's corresponding inner race.

3. Disassembly of Components
A. Piston Assembly
(1) Remove the high pitch stop spacer (27) from the rear of the assembly.
(a) Remove and discard the O-ring (28) from its groove in the piston.
(b) If the fiber washer (41), on the models in which it is installed, did not come out with the
assembly, it can be removed from the hub later.
1 Discard the fiber washer.
(2) Put the remaining parts of the assembly in an arbor press with the piston end up.
(a) Supply a plate with a hole large enough for the piston rod tube at the base of the press, so
that the assembly rests on the retaining ring (29) at the aft end.
(b) Put the assembly in position so that the press ram engages the top surface of the piston
as close as possible to the piston center, but away from the open ends of the retaining ring
(29) at the piston end.
(c) Move the arbor press ram down to slightly compress the spring(s) (40).
(3) Remove and discard the retaining ring (29) at the piston end.
(a) Release the arbor press ram until the pitch return spring(s) (40) is (are) completely relaxed.
(4) Remove the remaining retaining ring (29).
(a) Move the low pitch stop spacer (30), piston, spring guides (39), and spring(s) off the tube.
(b) Remove and discard the O-ring (32) from the piston (33).
B. Hub Assembly
(1) Remove and discard the piston rod to hub O-ring (58) and hub to engine shaft O-ring (2).
(2) C405 propellers with adapter:
(a) Secure the hub in a vise and remove the six bolts (82) to remove the adapter (83).

REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT

1. Repair
A. Refer to the Standard Practices Manual, Section 61-11-24 Hub Repairs and the Blade Overhaul
Manual, Section 61-10-24 Repair and Replacement.
B. Perform repairs as specified in Inspection/Check, Table 502.

2. Rework of Balance Ring

A. Procedure
(1) Propellers modified to the oil fill configuration require the installation of the C-7410 Balance Ring.
On propellers currently using the C-5727 Balance Ring, the ring may be modified to the new oil
filled configuration. This requires the drilling of nine new holes located as shown in Figure 601,
Balance Ring Holes.
(a) Locate balance ring centerline. Drill two thru-holes 0.205 to 0.212 inch (5.21 to 5.38 mm)
diameter and seven thru-holes 0.420 to 0.460 inch (10.67 to 11.68 mm) diameter as shown.
(b) Break hole edge 0.010 inch (0.254 mm) on face side only. Restamp balance ring with part
number C-7410.
(2) For 3A32C406 and D3A32C409 Propellers which have not been modified to incorporate use
of the C-5727 Balance Ring and tubes, purchase and installation of new oil filled balance ring,
cylinder, mounting tubes, cylinder mounting ring, and screws will be required per the Illustrated
Parts List.

3. Replacement of C-3411 or C4996 Bearing Races With C-5270 Bearing Races

A. General.
(1) C-3411 or C-4996 bearing races were installed on C401 through C408 propellers manufactured
before April 1982. Those propellers that do not have a prefix letter G stamped on the butt of the
blade must be modified before you install C-5270 bearing races as a replacement.
(a) The following part number propellers may be modified.

D3A34C401/90DFA D3A34C402/90DFA D3A34C403/80VA D3A34C404/80VA

B3A34C405/90DFA 3A32C406/82NDB B3A32C407/82NDA D3A32C408/82NDA
(2) C-3411 or C-4996 bearing races require 40 bearings and spacers with a smaller diameter than
the A-1634-9 balls and B-5223 spacers. The replacement bearing races require 32 each balls
and spacers.
(3) The blade shank must be modified as shown in the BOM.
(4) You must not use two different part number bearing races on the same propeller.

4. C-5717 Piston Modification

A. Modification
(1) The C-5717 Piston must be modified to C-5717A by removing 0.020 inch (0.51 mm) from the
face surface.
(2) Modify piston and steel stamp or etch part number C-5717 with change letter "A" on the piston
face. Refer to Figure 602, C-5717 Piston Modification.

5. Change Letter Stamping

A. Change Letter Stamping
(1) Propeller change letter stamping is required after a propeller is assembled.
(2) Change letter requirements must be reviewed prior to assembly. Stamping requirements may
be affected by part usage which may be internal and would not be visible after assembly.
(3) Change letters may indicate minor Engineering changes which do not affect the field. These
changes will be identified as "Not Applicable to Field" in the description and do not require
stamping on hub.

that the bottom edge of shim (48) is ALWAYS below the top of
the carrier (50) (Refer to Figure 703). Only one split shim (47) is
permitted. If the thickest (0.020 inch (0.508 mm)) is not enough,
use a thicker solid shim (47) and select a thinner split shim (46)
that will be suitable.
NOTE: For initial assembly use a 0.063 inch (1.60 mm) thick shim (47).

NOTE: Thicknesses should be chosen to avoid the necessity for changing shims. The blade
must be removed from the hub to change this shim.

(3) Carefully open wire ring (49) and install in groove of blade (51).
(4) Apply lubricant, Orelube K-2 on O-ring (53) and install the O-ring in the groove of the blade butt.

NOTE: All O-rings used on the blade shanks of a propeller assembly must be the same part
number. Do not mix different part number O-rings

(5) Apply a thin coat of Orelube K-2 on the blade butt from the O-ring inboard, all shims, shim carrier,
and inside diameter of hub sockets.
(6) Wash both split retainer ring halves (54 - matched pair) in solvent and dry.
(7) Apply lubricant, Orelube K-2, lightly to the split retainer halves.

NOTE: It is important that bearing parts (inner race, balls, spacers) be held in position while
the blade butt is inserted and moved for installation of retainer ring halves.

(8) With hub socket number 1 facing down, remove the spatulas from the number 1 socket.
(9) Insert the blade up through the hub and bearing races so that the butt end is approximately 0.5
to 1 inch (13 to 25 mm) farther in the hub than the normal position.
(10) Hold the blade in this position, and install the split retainer (54) as follows:

CAUTION: Split retainer halves (54) are manufactured as matched sets and
must be installed as a matched pair (identifiable by serial numbers
etched on outside diameter).
(a) Insert one retainer-half through the front hub opening with the square (non-radiused) step
on the outer diameter facing down, toward the blade tip (Refer to Figure 703).
(b) Position the retainer-half over the collar of the blade butt so that its centerline coincides
with that of the butt.
(c) Grasp the retainer-half at its approximate center and move it out (away from center)
allowing ends of the retainer-half to drop down (angle of approximately 45 degrees)
toward the blade recess below the collar.
(d) Move the retainer-half down, starting at the open ends, into the blade recess. Continue
until the retainer-half seats on the collar ledge in the recess.
(e) Slide retainer-half around the collar to the rear of hub (opposite cylinder opening).
(f) Install the second half in the same manner.
(g) Lower the blade, allowing the split retainer to engage the bearing inner race.

CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch the blade as you move the retaining ring
(49) to engage the groove in the butt. Retaining ring corners are
sharp. If blade shank is scratched by installation of the retaining
ring, the scratch must be polished out and blade shank refinished
(refer to the blade overhaul manual). Scratches are focal points for
corrosion and for the start of fatigue cracks.
(11) Using Snap-On PR8 pliers, carefully expand the retaining ring (49) and install the ring in the
groove in the blade butt.
(12) Rotate the hub and install blades in sockets 2 and 3 using the same procedure as the first blade.

9. Blade Shimming
A. Seat bearings and tighten the blades to reduce blade shake in the following manner: (Refer to Figure
704).
(1) Insert the thick end of the wedge, Part Number C-4626-3, into the hub to rest on the ends of two
blade butts.
(2) Put the plate, Part Number C-4626-1, against the third blade butt end.
(3) Slide the longer wedge, Part Number C-4626-2, between the plate and other wedge. The
inclined faces of both wedges must be against each other.
(4) Tap end of longer wedge with reasonable mallet blows to wedge the blade butts apart and
completely seat the bearings and retainers.
(5) Use a feeler gauge between retaining ring (49) and shim (47) to determine if a thicker split shim
(47) is required. Remove retaining ring (49) and install appropriate split shim (46). Reinstall
retaining ring (49).
(6) Withdraw seating tools.
(7) Rotate blades back and forth by hand approximately 180 degrees to check proper seating and
operation of the bearings. Rotate each blade 5 times.

10. Blade Shake Check

A. Blade Shake Check.
(1) Position hub so that one blade is straight up.
(2) Refer to the SPM100 Standard Practices Manual, Inspection Criteria, for the Blade Shake Check
procedure and approved limits

(3) If required, install thicker shims (46) to reduce the amount of blade shake.
(4) Check the torque required to rotate each blade (not to exceed 120 inch-pounds (13.6 N.m)).
Refer to Blade Friction Rotation Check
(5) If the use of the thickest split shim (46) (0.020 inch (0.508 mm)) does not reduce the blade shake
to an acceptable amount, or if it locates the bottom surface of the shim (48) outboard of the cup
of the shim carrier (50), then a thicker shim (47) and a thinner split shim (46) must be used.

CAUTION: With the parts at the most disadvantageous limit of their respective
tolerances, it is possible that the top of the thickest shim (46) will
be outboard of the cup of the shim carrier (50). As this condition
is not permitted, whenever the 0.018 or 0.020 inch (0.457 or 0.508
mm) split shim (46) appears to be required, make a very careful
determination that the top of the split shim will be inboard the cup
of the carrier when installed. If split shim (46) is not entirely within
the cup of the shim carrier, the split shim (46) could shift radially far
enough for an arc to be beyond the retaining ring (48). This would
be a dangerous condition.
(6) Disassemble propeller as required to replace shims (46 and 47) so that blade shake is
acceptable, and bottom surface of shim (48) is inboard the cup of shim carrier (50). Only 1 of
each shim (46 and 47) shall be used per blade.
(7) Repeat the procedure for the remaining blades.

11. Blade Rotation Friction Check

A. Check each blade as follows:
B. Slide a blade torque gage, Part Number B-2399, on the blade to station 30. Install a standard torque
wrench on hex of the torque gage and measure the torque required to rotate blade in the bearing.
Compute the actual torque on the blade from the wrench dial reading as follows:

(1) For propellers that use a C-7409 Cylinder Gasket:
(a) After checking and setting blade angles, remove cylinder and clean cylinder and hub
mounting surfaces with an approved solvent, such as MPK or acetone and allow to dry.

NOTE: The C-7409 cylinder gaskets are a specially formed, rubber coated, metal
gasket which is not reusable. Do not install the gasket and torque cylinder
screws until after final installation of pitch stops. Whenever it is necessary to
loosen cylinder attaching screws, the gasket must be replaced.

(b) Apply Loctite Gasket Sealant #2 generously to each side of a new, unused B-7409 cylinder
gasket (25). Applying sealant too sparingly or neglecting to coat both sides of the gasket
thoroughly may result in leakage.

CAUTION: The cylinder attaching hole located in line with center of blade
number one is shallow. The A-1635-64 (19) screw is 1.25 inch
(31.75 mm) long. The A-1635-70 (18) screw is 1.50 inch (38.10
mm) long. The A-1635-64 must be installed in hole aligned with
blade number one.
(c) After applying sealant to both sides of gasket (25), immediately install gasket (25), cylinder
(24), balance ring (23), tubes (22), cylinder ring (21), and screws (18, 19 and 20).
1 Torque all screws per Table 701 using alternating torquing sequence.
2 Repeat torque sequence three to four times to ensure seating of gasket.

NOTE: Allow a minimum of 15 minutes between each torque cycle.

3 Lockwire cylinder attaching screws (18, 19) in groups of two or three.

NOTE: Screws (20) are patched and do not require safety wire.

NOTE: Pressure and leak testing of the propeller assembly is the same regardless
of the installed cylinder gasket part number.

(b) Low +0.2 or -0.2 degrees

NOTE: Angles for blade sets must be within 0.2 degrees of each other. For example,
if the lowest pitch angle for one blade is 14.6 degrees, the other must not be
more then 14.8 degrees.
B. High Pitch Stop Adjustment
(1) Remove the cylinder (24).
(a) The high pitch stop (27) will be suspended on the piston rod (19).

NOTE: C417 propellers do not have a high pitch stop.

(2) Protect the work area, and especially the inside of the hub, from chips or other debris from the
cutting operation.
(3) If the high pitch stop is too thick:
(a) Remove a 1.5 inch (39 mm) segment from the high pitch stop and slip it off the piston.
1 Smooth the cut ends of the high pitch stop.
(b) Insert a thinner high pitch stop of appropriate thickness to get the required pitch.

NOTE: A decrease in thickness of approximately 0.013 inch (0.33 mm) will increase the
high pitch angle 0.2 degrees.

(4) If the high pitch stop is too thin:

(a) Determine the additional thickness required to get the proper high pitch.

NOTE: An increase in thickness of approximately 0.013 inch (0.33 mm) will decrease
the high pitch angle 0.2 degrees.

(b) If necessary, cut out a 1.5 inch (39 mm) segment from the shim that you will insert.
(c) Insert the shim between the existing high pitch stop (27) and the hub.
(5) If the low pitch stop requires adjustment, refer to Adjust Low Pitch Spacer
(6) If the low pitch stop does not require adjustment, install the cylinder. Refer to Assembly.
C. Adjust Low Pitch Spacer. (Refer to Figure 705).
(1) Remove the cylinder (24) if it has not been removed.
(2) Install an adjusting cylinder (part number C-4128) and adjusting cylinder spacer (part number

TESTING AND BALANCE

1. General
A. Refer to the Standard Practice Manual, Section 60-00-07, Blade Track and Blade to Blade Balance.

2. Blade Angle Check

A. Following overhaul it is necessary to check and adjust blade angles at the reference station (refer to
FAA Data Sheet), statically balance, and pressure test propeller for leakage. Final check-out of the
propeller assembly should occur after installation on the airplane during initial engine run-up.
(1) The following procedure is recommended to test the propeller.
(a) Check individual blade balance with respect to other blades.
(b) Reassemble the propeller assembly. Refer to the Assembly section.
(c) Check and record low blade angle.
(d) Check and record high blade angle.
(e) Pressure test the propeller assembly for leakage.
(f) Complete the procedure with a final balance of the propeller assembly.

NOTE: Angles for blade sets must be within 0.2 degrees of each other. For example, if the
lowest pitch angle for one blade is 14.6 degrees, the others must not be more then
14.8 degrees.

(2) Blade angles for high and low pitch positions, measured at reference stations, must be as listed
in the FAA Data Sheet. Allowable limits for these angles are:
(a) High + or - 0.5 degrees
(b) Low + or - 0.2 degrees
B. Adjustment of low-pitch and high-pitch blade angles is obtained by varying the thickness of spacers.
These angles will change 0.2 degree for each 0.010 inch change in spacer thickness. Thickness
of spacers furnished in propeller assemblies may vary. If thickness needs to be reduced, remove
metal from the existing spacer. If thickness needs to be increased, add steel washers of suitable size
and proper thickness to adjust low-pitch spacer, to adjust high-pitch spacer, cut shim from the proper
spacer stock.
(1) Place cylinder-end of hub on support stand (part number C-2364, Change A) and measure the
angle of each blade at the 30 inch station, in the low pitch position, to be within limits given in
the FAA Data Sheet.

NOTE: If thickness of spacer needs to be changed, refer to Assembly, Pitch Stop Adjustment.

(2) Install a used O-ring in hub and install blade shift attachment (part number D-4703) onto the
hub (Refer to Figure 705). Pressurize with air to approximately 100 psi until blades shift to high
pitch position. Measure the angle of each blade at the 30 inch reference station. Angles must
be within limits in FAA Data Sheet.

NOTE: If thickness of spacer needs to be changed, refer to Assembly, Pitch Stop Adjustment.

3. Leakage
A. Perform a pressure leakage test per the Standard Practice Manual, Section 60-00-08, Pressure
Leakage Tests.

4. Static Balance
A. Perform blade track and static balance procedures per the Standard Practice Manual, Section 60-00-
07, Blade Track and Blade to Blade Balance.

5. Oil Filling
A. Following assembly, all oil filled propellers (refer to Table 801) must be serviced with 2.11 quarts (2000
ml) red-dyed oil, refer to table 801 for a listing of oil filled propeller models. Filling is accomplished
through the oil-filler plug in the side of hub. Following servicing, an A-4714 Plug must be installed
using Loctite #2 to prevent oil leakage. Torque plug per the Assembly section, Table 702. Apply
sentry seal to plug and hub.

NOTE: For D3434C447 propellers that have previously been serviced with 1.37 quarts (1300 ml)
of red dyed oil, the addition of 0.74 quart (700 ml) will increase the weight of the propeller
assembly by 1.4 pounds (0.635 kg).

OVERHAUL MANUAL

ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST

1. Illustrated Parts List

A. The propeller assemblies covered in this Overhaul Manual are listed in the Illustrated Parts Lists by
the significant portion of the hub model designation, such as C409. The C406, C409, C420, and C423
are listed for non-oil filled configuration (-0X) and oil filled configuration (-5X) (Refer to Repair, Table
601, Change Letter Stamping Requirements, for requirement to oil fill). These model designations
appear as column headings. Usage of parts in specific propellers is shown by an "X" in the column
for that propeller or by an actual quantity when quantities vary among propellers.
B. Through the years, parts have been obsoleted and replaced. Usage of the new parts may be
mandatory or optional. All part numbers which are acceptable for usage in a propeller assembly are
listed in the Master Parts List.
(1) The model C401, C402, C403, C404, C405, C406, C407, C408, C409, C411, C412, and C413
were originally built with a "lightweight" hub. Those hubs are not procurable and must be
replaced with the current production hub at hub replacement.
(2) The balancing hardware on the "lightweight" hubs cannot be used with the new style hubs
C. An exploded view of a typical C400 Series non-oil filled and oil filled propeller appears following the
Master Parts List ( Figure 1001). The index numbers for parts in the illustration are used to identity
detail part numbers, assemblies, or groups of similar part numbers in the Master Parts List.
(1) Figure 1001 illustrates the breakdown of the propeller assembly.
(2) Figure 1002 illustrates spinner components.
(3) Figure 1003 illustrates McCauley installed deice systems.
(4) Refer to the McCauley Propeller Systems Application Guide (MAG) and the aircraft type
certificate data sheet for applications of specific part numbers.

NOTE: The MAG is not an FAA approved document, and is for reference only. Refer to
the appropriate airplane Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) or Supplemental Type
Certificate (STC) to verify information contained in this guide.

(5) Refer to Section 60-00-06 Paint, in the SPM100 for paint scheme details.
