Module Description
This module gives learners an introduction on the definition of physical education and its
importance. The legal mandates that governs the subject and provide its necessity to be
undertaken.
Objectives
The module aims to:
1. Define Physical Education in various aspects;
2. Provide the legal bases that governs Physical Education; and
3. List down the various concepts and aspects related to physical education.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
a. Give the meaning of Physical Education
b. Identify the legal bases of physical education.
c. Enumerate the objectives of Physical Education

INTRODUCTION
Physical Education is "education through the physical". It aims to develop students’
physical competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use these to
perform in a wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy
lifestyle. It also develops students’ confidence and generic skills, especially those of collaboration,
communication, creativity, critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation. These, together with the
nurturing of positive values and attitudes in PE, provide a good foundation for students’ lifelong
and life-wide learning.
Although exercise is fundamentally large part of Physical Education, a close examination
of the lives of the previous societies of man reveals that exercise alone is not a true representation

of Physical Education. Man has always had a propensity of natural bent for physical activity and
this natural urge has always carried educational or learning implications with it.
According to Bucher, the word physical refers to the body. It is often used in reference to
various bodily characteristics such as physical strength, physical development, physical prowess,
physical health and physical appearance. The word education is added to the word physical,
thus forming the phrase physical education which refers to the process of education that
concern activity that develop and maintain the human body.
When an individual performs any one of the many physical education activities, education
is an important part of the educational process. It is a vital part of the process.
Terms that sometimes used synonymously for physical education (Bucher) Gymnastic
refers to the exercises that are adaptable to or are performed in gymnasium. It is the art of
performing various types of physical exercise and feats or skills.
1. Health refers to such qualities of physical, mental, emotional and social health; it is not
limited to the mere absence of disease or infirmity but rather it means total fitness.
2. Recreation – is concerned with those activities performed by an individual during non-
working hours. It is frequently referred to as leisure-time activity.
3. Movement education – the concept of movement education in physical education
stresses body awareness of an understanding of how the body moves to develop efficient
and effective motor development.
4. Exercise – means using or exerting the body.
5. Play – refers to the resultant of action, or what the participants do during physical exertion.
6. Games – refer to the amusements or diversions to competitions with significant outcomes
governed by rules.
7. Leisure – freedom from work or duties, which may or may not be used for physical activity.
8. Recreation – refreshes or renew one’s strength and spirit after toil again with or with
activity.
9. Sports – encompass all those diversions and physical activities that one does for
pleasure.
10. Athletics – are organized, competitive activities in which tined individuals participate wary
in individual.
11. Body Mechanics - refers to the force and motion of the human body. It is described as
efficient performance and balance of the body parts.
12. Good Posture means alignment and balance of the body parts. The desirable values can
be derived is efficiency of movement.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEFINED
Charles Bucher suggested a definition of physical education, as an integral part of the total
education process, is a field of endeavor that has its aim the improvement of human performance
through the medium of physical activities that have been selected with a view to realizing this
outcome.
Defined simply, physical education is an integral part of the whole educational process
which is designed for optimum development of an individual physically, mentally, emotionally and
socially through total body movements in the performance of properly selected physical activities.
THE FOUR AIMS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (M.G And A.G.L. Ventre 1965)
1. To prepare a child for living

4. To arouse in a child an appreciation of the cultural, moral, emotional and spiritual
heritage of mankind.
Physical education as a vital part of the curriculum across various discipline are comprises of Four
Subjects or equivalent to 8 Units Physical Education Subject.
Depending on the institution/college/university offering of Physical Education can vary. At
Northeastern College, we offer the following:
PE 11 – Mainly focus on the legal bases of Physical Education, Physical Fitness, Physical
Activities, Components of an Exercise Program, Basic anatomical understanding of the
body. It also includes discussion on Gymnastics, Relays Activities and Nutrition.
PE 12 – discusses concepts about “Rhythm”, this includes basic locomotor and non-
locomotor ideas, principles of rhythm, various concepts of dances from mimetic
movement, explorative movement, folk movement, classical movement, ballet movement,
to contemporary movement even social mixers.
PE 13 – the subject explains the importance of sports as an important life for lifelong
fitness. The discussion includes ideas of Individual and Dual Sports, Combative Sports
and Team Sports. It covers ideas from basic skills to advance skills, rules of the games
and even officiating.
PE 14 – the course specifically elaborate the concepts and ideas for Recreation or Leisure
Activities. Recreation as a vital ingredient to a healthy and lifelong fitness life. This includes
mental recreation, extreme and even ….
The Legal Basis of Physical Education in the Philippines can be found in the Philippine
Constitution of 1987, Article 14, section 19.
1) The State shall promote physical education and encourage sports
programs, league competitions and amateur sports, including training for
international competitions, to foster self-discipline, teamwork, and
excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry.
2) AII educational institutions shall undertake regular sports activities
throughout the country in cooperation with athletic clubs and other
sectors.
